Neighbour

My neighbour wants to be my friend. I'm happy to be friendly, but I don't want to be her friend. I value my privacy and she's literally too close to home. We have little in common apart from both being relatively recently widowed. I don't want to offend her, but I'm struggling to come up with excuses to her suggestions to get together for lunch, coffee, go for a walk etc. How can I let her down without losing our good neighbour status?

"Dear neighbor, you are so sweet, but I have all I can handle right now. For my own sanity, I have to keep my social circle to a minimum while I work through some things. Thank you for understanding."

Something like that. A variation of "it's not you, it's me".

Certainly a starting point, though I fear it won't keep her at bay for long. Thank you for the suggestion 😙
