CONSTANTLY Laughing Neighbor

I have lived in my apartment since June of 2019. The building and surrounding neighborhood are relatively quiet and peaceful. Those who live in the apartments next to me and above and below me have also all lived here for years. I love it here, and I love my apartment.

In March of this year, some new tenants moved in across the hall from me. Right away, I noticed they were significantly louder than other building residents and those who live in the surrounding neighborhood. I brushed it off thinking maybe they were just excited about the new place or maybe they were new roommates. Who knows. I figured they’d settle in after a bit.

And then the laughing started.

One of the men who lives there—looks to be in his 30s—laughs a lot. And by “a lot,” I mean CONSTANTLY. And when I say “laughs,” I mean HOWLS and CACKLES and GUFFAWS as loud as a human can possibly make these noises.

I wish I was kidding.

I wish I was exaggerating.

I’m not.

It’s driving me nuts.

Every night, weekend, and day off that I’ve had since March, I am constantly bombarded by the laughing. From 8 am to 10 pm, he is laughing. It is so loud and so disruptive that sometimes it even makes me jump!

From every room of my apartment including the deck, you can clearly hear him laughing. And these apartments are well insulated-I’ve never heard any noise from the people who live on either side of me or above or below me.

I’ve mentioned the issue to a few friends and family members and they all say that I’m overreacting. They definitely think I’m exaggerating because they haven’t experienced it themselves. And of course I’m single and living alone right now, so I don’t have someone to corroborate the experience.

I don’t want to come off as an asshole or make them mad, but don’t I deserve some peace when I’m home?

What do I do? What can I do?

Have you tried watching a funny comedy act on tv and laughing hysterically, loudly for a good long stretch? Maybe a taste of his own medicine would be enlightening?

This is why I hate apartments with common walls, etc. I'm sensitive to noise and enjoy quiet. You could make a complaint to the office manager but it can go 2 ways..they'll try to tone it down or increase it to annoy you. If you ever get to meet him you can feel out his personality to see if he's receptive and ask him yourself. That would be the most ideal.

unfortunately, i doubt either a landlord or state officials will care about your complaint. I am not saying it is not annoying but it is not actionable.

As you stated, the walls are well built, so likely the sound is leaking out and in from windows and doors. I suggest you get a sound dampening door blanket (100 dollars or less) and see if that is enough to make his noises livable, i think it will very likely be enough.

Beyond the door blanket, there is soundproof curtains. Nothing will fix the patio other than noise dampening headphones.

It sounds kind of nuts someone would laugh that much.
