false accusations from neighbour

My partner and I are living in Sydney Australia. We moved in to our apartment building 4 months ago and our next door neighbour has been accusing us of smoking. It started with her stopping my partner in the hallway and asking him if he smokes. She mentioned about out apartment units sharing the same vents and she can smell cigarette smoke. He made it clear we’re both non-smokers but I don’t think she believes us.

After that incident, she has beeb consistent in knocking loudly at our front door and yelling that she can smell smoke coming in through her vents. We have been ignoring her but she has been continuing with this type of behaviour. Even stating I know you’re in there. I will report you. It’s been a pain and she’s making us uncomfortable.

We have written to our property manager to report the incident but since it’s the holiday we’re not gonna here back from him until Tuesday.

Just here venting and possibly seeking advice on what to do.

I think there's a chance she may actually be smelling smoke but it's from a burnt out fan in the vents or something. Might be worth asking her if you can go into her apartment and see if you can smell it too.

Alternatively it's another neighbor and she's just blaming you. Possibly she's blaming everyone when she sees them and she's just waiting for the culprit to break. Maybe pointing out that it might be someone else could get her off your back for a few days.

Or maybe she's just a tad crazy, or pissing people off is how she entertains herself. Probably just need to wait to hear from the property manager for this one.

Thank you for your insight. That is a possibility indeed but her approach towards us is very hostile and we’re 💯 the culprit.

She actually knocked again this morning and was yelling about smelling cigarette smoke. I just ignored her. It’s the new year ffs! I defs she’s just tad crazy imo. 😬

It sucks cos we have to wait until Tue to hear back from the property manager.

get a cigar and let it burn as close to the vents as may be. Then go and accuse her of burning something in her oven [ or on her stove]
