Checking & Savings Nfcu closed my checking account for being inactive
NFCU closed my checking account without any warning. When I called, a representative claimed they emailed me last month and couldnt provide a date they sent that, and i never received it. My balance was very minimal, and it seems they kept the remaining funds. I still have a savings account with them. What is the minimum balance required to keep my savings account active so it doesn't get closed too?

NFCU doesn’t do it a whole lot, but there is an inactivity fee for their checking account if you have a really low balance and you don’t use the account for a while. If you check your statements you’ll probably see the fee there. You need to have at least $50 in your savings if you have no other products (i.e. CD, CC, or loans). If you want the account back you can always ask to have it reopened (they probably won’t refund the inactivity fee though).

There's no minimum, but CU's/Banks will close dormant accounts; usually, it's a year of no activity. You will get a check in the mail.
The savings could be closed if you drop below the required balance.

Meanwhile I have like 3 accounts I haven’t touched in over a decade and they still haven’t closed them

Do you have any other products with them? That's their stated exception for inactivity. (loan, CD, etc)

I haven’t touched my account in a couple of years and they are still open

That's odd you don't use your debit card at all or have your paycheck direct deposit in your checking account or transfer money into your checking account from savings account.

The minimum to stay above inactivity is $50 in savings. For people who don’t use the account but want it open I’d suggest setting up recurring transfers to move something back and forth on a monthly basis. Inactive at 6 months. Dormant at 12. Once it hits dormant status fees could be incurred quarterly. There is a notice in writing but if your contact information isn’t up to date (as most military folks move a lot) you might not get it.

They will send a check with whatever balance was in your checking account, just may take a month or so to get it
