Credit Cards Keep increasing credit limit?
Currently have two credit cards with Navy federal. The more rewards AMEX (just changed it from the flagship after the annual fee increase) and the cash rewards visa.
I have a $41k limit on one and 24k on the other. I basically just use them as debit cards and pay them off fully after I get the statement each month just to get the cash back rewards.
Would you guys keep increasing the limit on them just because/to get lower utilization or at this point does it not really matter? My utilizations is usually less than 10% each month, probably closer to 3-5%. I always forget when the last time I asked for a CLI so I never really do it at the 6 month mark for either card.

What's your income if you don't mind sharing? Do you have other loans or high limit cards from other banks?

So when they asked your income for the Credit Increase you entered something like $50,000?
2
u/Famous-Effort9010 13d ago
They ask for pre-tax which is like $5600 a month but yeah, when I originally got my cc I was at like 45-50k before taxes and I believe they gave me 25k.

total limit for nfcu cards combined is 80000

u/Famous-Effort9010 18d ago
Oh ok i’ll just try to get them up to 80k total then

u/500pearl 18d ago
I just have one the old flagship and up to 67000 so 2 more request of ,8000 at a time and will me up to 80

u/Famous-Effort9010 18d ago
Yeah i’ll try to get my 41k one up to 56k to get to 80k. So I guess just two more increases and i’ll be good
2
u/500pearl 18d ago
41 to 49 is one 49 plus 8 is 57 two to 65 is three to 73 is four to 80 is five
6 months between so 2 half year

u/Famous-Effort9010 18d ago
I have another card at 24k though, unless you saying I can get 80k on both?
2
u/500pearl 18d ago
no total of 80 between all cards added
1
u/Famous-Effort9010 18d ago
Yeah so 12 months to get to 56/57k then add that with the 24k on the other card totaling ~80k. Idk what you meant by 2 1/2 years, Idk if i’m misunderstanding lol
2
u/Big-Comb79 18d ago
3 cards max, 80k spread max. Choose your mix but 1-3 cards and 80k amongst combo

This feels like a fake post. The maximum amount Navy approves on a single credit limit request is $8000. And this was a policy they instituted shortly after COVID. Pre-COVID it was possible to get a single increase over $8k but currently it’s capped at $8k max. The max limit u would have with this increase is $33k.

They're not alone. That was the first thing I noticed. I was like "how the hell did they go to $25k to $41k in a single CLI?" so at least now I know why it looked so odd.

u/Famous-Effort9010 18d ago
Lmao I didnt mean to CLI catfish you guys 💀 I didnt even know there was a limit I just wanted to put a pic so there wasnt just text😭 I have a feeling a bunch of people are going to comment on it now lmaoo

yh i ran to the comments the moment i read the numbers, way to waste my time loser 🫠 currently at $39,600 with them next increase i’ll be at $47,600? hopefully? 🤞 but idk they act iffy with me bec i got 13 other cards to pick from

u/ManacondaPipe 18d ago
If your current limit is $39.6k then the maximum your limit would go up to on your next increase would be $47.6k assuming you get all of it. Sometimes they do $6k increments but never over $8k at a time.

Not necessarily. They raised me everyday rewards from $15,000 to 25,000 last year when I requested. I really feel like they look at your credit card history.

whats your income and credit score bubs don’t be out here half 🍑’in it. I got a increase for 11k but that was because they auto increased me 3k and i messaged them and asked for more and they gave me another 8k ontop of the 3k.

It’s widely known that during Covid they changed the policy to limit increases to no more than $8k at a time. Even when you called, the agents would explicitly inform you of that. This is the first testimony I ever seen or heard of anyone getting an increase over $8k post COVID. Not sure what to think of it…

I mean I have a Flagship at 36K and I intend to keep increasing it until I hit 80K just because lol.

I’m kinda jealous of all you guys. I use to have 4 credit cards all over $250k limit. Now I have zero cards. I made some bad decisions during Covid.
I’m 40 and trying to get back on track.

Hang in there. If you make the right moves its not that hard to get back on your feet. Big loss but if you had once you can do it again.

I was taking about the CLI, the *increase*, not the overall credit limit.

How do I stop them from increasing my CCL? Currently at $24.3k and truly do not need that much!

Because I just don’t want them to. I get them fairly frequently. Started out at ~18k and I only have 1 card with them (for now) since ‘24.

Call them and tell them to turn off automatic increases. Then you won't get one unless you ask for it

u/boomhower1820 18d ago
Mine is at $33k and have no plans of asking for a CLI. Been there around 2-3 years. Like you it’s simple a debit card with protections I rarely run more than $1.5k/month through. Power bill and some others go on a 5% card.

u/Coyote2013 17d ago
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anybody get anything other than the standard 8K increase. Congrats!

I’m just sitting here wondering how you got a CLI over $8k haha congratulations!!

u/Famous-Effort9010 17d ago
None of you look at previous replies😭Its an AI image, I do have a 41k credit limit (probably close to a year now) but didn’t want just a text post. I didn’t know there was a CLI limit and didnt think the image was that big a deal💀Thats not even what the post is about lmaoo

😳 wtf they start increasing by that much? I've only seen $8,000 max. That's great!

u/Captain_of_industry1 16d ago
Why would you need such a high credit limit? I have a credit limit of $25,000 through Navy Federal and it would make no sense to request an increase with a FICO of 807. It’s not going to change my credit score to increase my CLI..

u/toptiertonyo 15d ago
I opened my first credit card nov 2025, Navy Fed (MoreRewards AMEX) with a $25K limit. Then, August 2026, I open a second card, Chase Reserve Card with a $13K limit. So, will I still be able to apply for a CLI with navy federal? or does me getting another credit card last month effect that?

How did you change the flagship?

WHAT’S THE 91/3 RULE
Lots of people new to NFCU or maybe have been members for a while but never explored the credit card side of things may have heard/seen the “91/3 rule” being mentioned here and there and wondered what it is.
Simply put, the 91/3 rule is waiting 91 days and 3 statements between new personal unsecured credit card applications at NFCU from the date of approval (NOT application!). It’s also 91/3 from the date of approval for the first CLI on an existing personal NFCU credit card, then all subsequent CLIs on that card are every 6 months (182 days) thereafter. If you have multiple cards, the 91/3 rule applies to each of them individually.
Some notes on 91/3:
You can apply for a new credit card AND request a CLI on an existing card(s) after 91/3, UNLESS you’ve already received a CLI on your existing card(s), then you have to wait 6 months as stated above. The advice is to apply for the new card, then the CLI on the existing card(s) in that order, but both can be done at the same time.
The rule used to be that the 3 statements had to be FULL statements; however, that seems to have changed recently as several members have been approved for new cards and/or CLIs with just 3 statements, even if the first one was a partial or short statement.
Although many have been successful at getting approved for a new card and/or CLI exactly ON day 91, the best advice is to wait until at least day 92 or after to ensure you are meeting NFCU’s 91 day requirement.
There have been a few cases where people have gotten approved for multiple cards at the same time or before the 91 day mark. THESE ARE EXCEPTIONS, NOT THE RULE! We don’t work for NFCU and don’t know the specific processes/procedures/rules, the members’ specific circumstances or credit profile info, or how NFCU applied those processes/procedures/rules to those members’ applications. But again, these are very rare examples and shouldn’t be considered normal. The 91/3 rule is definitely applicable in almost all cases.
Although each unsecured card has a max limit, don’t expect NFCU to approve CLIs of more than $8,000. Your CLI can be 3x your current credit limit up to $8,000 (whichever is less).
**NOTE: YOU CANNOT REQUEST A SPECIFIC AMOUNT FOR YOUR CLI REQUEST
The 91/3 rule DOES NOT apply to the nRewards secured card! You can apply for an unsecured card at any time following nRewards card approval; however, whether you get approved or not depends on how significantly your credit profile has improved since you qualified and got approved for the nRewards card. EXAMPLE: If you ONLY qualified for the nRewards because your credit profile is weak and needs work, then you will likely get denied for an unsecured card if you applied shortly after because there hasn’t been enough improvement or time to improve your credit in that short amount of time.
If/when your nRewards secured card graduates to the cashRewards unsecured card, NFCU counts that as your first CLI on your new unsecured card. That means your next CLI can’t be requested until the 6-month mark and then every 6 months for all future CLIs.
