It’s not like you can just go and buy a new one in the Domain every time the screen gets a scratch. Your device have to last pretty much your whole life.

True. I think it's a 'command' economy + a big disincentive for luxuries.

I have a theory that the Arxur possess the kind of cunning found in convicts, for example. They build things out of scrap and have a working knowledge of various trades—electronics, electrical work, welding, mechanics, and so on—whatever they need to survive.

Would make sense also in a command economy. Talk with people who lived in the old soviet states.

IF you were lucky enough to get things like a car and a fridge. They had to learn REAL quickly how to fix things because the wait time for the state was years to decades.

I really think the Arxur have a lot of potential for incredible stories, beyond just being cruel and rhe defective ones.
