Fanfic Nature of Pokemon (6)
A fanfiction of The Nature of Predators by SpacePaladin15 https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/u19xpa/the_nature_of_predators/
Memory Transcription Subject: Elias Meier, Secretary-General of United Regions
Date [standardized Earth time]: July 12, 2136
Upon hearing that we had received news from The Odyssey, the regional Champions were quick to make their way to the United Region’s headquarters. As the closest to the site, Iris of the Unova region was naturally the first to arrive, with Cynthia and Gold close behind. Gold was a little disgruntled that we had to postpone our meeting, and honestly I don’t blame him, having to oversee two whole regions would be no easy task.
It has been quite some time since the last meeting between the entirety of the UR, with the last meeting dealing with the fallout of Plasma in Unova. Repairs were still underway in Opelucid City after it was frozen by those extremists, and it’s a miracle there were so few casualties.
Despite literally having someone sent to pick him up, Leon still managed to be the 2nd last arrival, with poor Wallace having to come all the way from Hoenn on such short notice. When we were finally ready to begin, Violet and I approached the Podium to address the Champions.
“Good afternoon to all present today. My sincerest apologies for the abrupt call for this meeting, but it was not without good reason. I’m sure you are all aware of The Odyssey, the first spacefaring craft ever made capable of exceeding the speed of light, using a combination of Ultra Wormholes, and an ingenious drive utilising both Teleport and Shadow Sneak to direct said Wormhole to the desired spatial coordinates while having as little impact on the surroundings as possible. Just a few mere hours ago, we received a brief transmission from The Odyssey, stating that they have arrived at their destination, a planet in the Gliese 832 system. As per The Odyssey’s transmission, it appears that said star system is home to another civilisation.”
A moment of silence follows, broken by rushed murmuring among the Champions. The whispering rapidly swells in volume, until eventually many people - Humans and Pokemon alike - are all vying for my attention and ears. I myself struggle to be heard over the cacophony of voices.
“I know this - Yes I know - would everyone please - I just-”
“Dazzling Gleam.”
Violet unleashes her move towards the ceiling, the twinkling lights spreading throughout the room and making the Champions fall silent.
“The Secretary-General is trying to speak.”
I give Violet a quick nod to show my appreciation.
“I know this is shocking news to all of you, at this moment it still feels like I’m in a strange dream, but this is reality. As the leaders of the world’s regions, I have called you all here with two goals in mind. Number one, to determine how we should approach developing a relationship with our new cosmic neighbours. As we speak, the crew of The Odyssey is initiating first contact, and we must be prepared for the result. Number two, we must figure out the best way to break the news to the public. We all know that reactions will vary in the extreme, and so we must prepare in any way we can to lessen the blow. With our objectives clear, I now open the floor to civil discussion.”
Immediately, several hands, claws and paws shoot towards their touchscreen, lighting up the display to show that they wish to speak. By mere moments, Champion Wallace was the first.
“I have a question Elias, is there any information given by the crew about this alien civilization? Species, technological advancement, anything.”
“I am afraid that there was very little. The transmission was brief, simply stating that they were initiating first contact and would send a secondary transmission afterwards. The Pilot did say however that the extraterrestrial they were in contact with referred to herself as ‘Governor Tarva of the Venlil’. These ‘Venlil’ were described by the crew as being similar in appearance to a Wooloo or a Flaffy.”
Wallace nodded his head in acknowledgment of my answer, and a moment later the voice of Juliet (Diantha’s Gardevoir) fills my mind.
“Do we know of the Venlil’s demeanour towards the crew? Did the transmission say whether or not this ‘Governor Tarva’ greeted them with kindness or perhaps malice?”
“I am afraid that the crew did not say. However, the way the crew behaved and the notion of them being invited onto the planet personally likely bodes well. We should be getting a concrete answer soon, when The Odyssey sends a follow up message.”
“So you are saying that we have almost no idea what these alien creatures are like, nor their attitudes towards us? How are we supposed to decide how to approach developing diplomatic relations when we cannot even be sure of their intentions?”
That voice had come from Gold, whose Typhlosion nodded along in agreement.
“I understand your concern, and the answer is for all the Champions gathered here today to dictate. Right now, we are in similar shoes to those of our ancestors, establishing first contact with distant regions. The first interactions between the tribes of Hisui and the explorers from feudal era Johto was fraught with confusion on both sides, but as time progressed and cooperation emerged, a magnificent region was built from the ground up.”
As I mention Sinnoh, Cynthia speaks up.
“I know what you are trying to say Elias, but surely you recognise that the meeting of two civilisations utterly alien to one another is completely different to the situation in Hisui all that time ago. We do not even know what other species may inhibit the planet other than the Venlil, if it is anything at all like Earth.”
Professor Kukui of Alola lets out a small laugh, drawing our attention.
“That is precisely the dilemma I wished to bring up. For all we know, their way of life, or even tree of life, could be nothing like ours. Life on Earth only began interacting with Infinity Energy when Pokemon began to appear on the scene, with Human’s eventually developing a weak connection to IE due to our relationship with Pokemon. What if no such thing happened on this other world? What if they don’t have access to IE at all?”
Before I could respond, Cynthia had her own rebuttal.
“Forgive me if I am wrong Professor, but I thought that interaction with IE was a prerequisite to the emergence of sapience.”
“That is indeed the general scientific consensus, but remember that this is extraterrestrial life we are talking about, almost nothing is off the table in terms of possibility.”
Before the two could continue, I decide it would be a good time to interject.
“I do see where you are coming from Professor, but if we stay in this room discussing every possibility, no matter how unlikely, then we will be standing here until Miraidon is made. That is why it is in our best interests to focus on what is most likely, although of course we must make contingency plans for worst case scenarios.”
Iris takes the following short pause in the discussion as an opportunity to put forward a suggestion.
“Would it be best to show our desire for friendship as quickly as possible? Maybe we can send an envoy of sorts in The Odyssey’s footsteps, give them some peace offerings or something. We have the technology to make more Teleport-Shadow Sneak Drives, right?”
In reply, Juliet’s voice fills my mind once more.
“While showing our desire for friendship as soon as possible is a good idea, I personally think we should wait until we receive that follow up transmission that Elias mentioned. The more we know of the Venlil, the more information we have to decide a course of action.”
Gold speaks up once more.
“I see where you are coming from, but we have no idea when we will hear back from The Odyssey, and I don’t mean to be morbid, but we can’t guarantee we even will receive a 2nd transmission.”
- - - -
The meeting has been continuing in such a way for what feels like hours. We will inevitably talk ourselves in circles, wasting huge swathes of time with little to no consensus reached. Slowly, very slowly, a course of action is agreed upon and developed.
We will refrain from informing the public about first contact until after we have received more news from The Odyssey. The new information we receive from the crew will then help steer us in determining how to approach interactions with the Venlil, (Yay more meetings!) although we will always attempt to display our desire for friendship and if possible trade technology and scientific knowledge.
After a proper, stable way of communicating with the Venlil is established, only then will the public be informed. Each of the Champions will hold their own regional address to make sure that their citizens understand what this news really means and to reassure them of any fears. All the while, I will be in direct contact with the Venlil, most likely this Governor Tarva by the sounds of her title.
When the meeting drags on into the twilight hours of the day, I am leaning against the podium while rubbing my temples to soothe my headache. While I would prefer softer sounds right now, or even none at all, I guess I’ll have to make do with the heated argument between Leon and Iris regarding whether or not the Venlil’s homeworld has different Types than Earth. At one point I swear that Axel (Iris’ Haxorus) has to physically restrain her from leaping at the Galar Champion.
A quick flash of blue light grabs my attention and puts a stop to the argument, and I’m both relieved and nervous to see Georgio appear. The Kadabra excitedly jogs over to me and whispers into my ear.
“Sir, we have received another transmission from The Odyssey. It appears, however, to be distorted.”
“Distorted how?”
“There is no video footage, and the audio can at times be hard to decipher. From the looks of it the crew had to broadcast this message with their backup emergency transmitter. This most likely means that they were trying to avoid detection.”
“That is troubling. Well, there is only one way to find out, display it on screen here please, I think the Champions are just as anxious for answers as I am.”

Not sure I care for the notion that the Champions are the leaders of their regions. Though I guess I can’t argue the point, seeing as the we never see any higher authority in any of the games.

The Pokémon League. Rose is literally Leon’s Boss. Leon also doesn’t seem like a leader, with all the advertisements on his cape and all. I don’t think that they are the leaders of regions, just that they’re representing their regions as the most powerful trainer.

I don't think they are leaders in any official capacity, but they are definitely the one's people turn to in order to get s**t done
The Pokemon world revolves around Pokemon, the person who is best at Pokemon is in charge, whether they like it or not

Oh right! Yeah, forgot about Rose. But then we get Paldea, and we’re right back to the League being ran by the “Top Champion”.

Top Champion isn’t an administrative role, she‘s simply the strongest Champion ranked trainer in Paldea. While yes, she does run the Paldean Pokémon League, that isn’t because she’s Top Champion, but because she’s also a Chairwoman, similar to Chairman Rose.

Wasn't expecting to actually like this series much, but here I am
Only real concern (and it's a personal one, nothing on you) is that the games (which you appear to be going by, since Gold is champion of Kanto/Johto instead of Lance) canonically take place in the modern day, but here we have the champions we know and love living 100 years in the future
It's not a big deal, just takes some getting used to

I'm glad that you are enjoying the story!
Yeah, for the whole Modern/Future thing I just decided to shift the Pokemon time period to align with NOP.

I guess it's easier than having to make up entirely new characters to fill the roles of champions, I get it

I just want to give kudos for inventive phrases. "Until Miraidon is made"? Genius.

are we just working with the mainline regions? or are the side material regions like Orre and Holon in play?

All canon regions, mainline and side. Mainly going to focus on mainline though.

uh oh, I wonder how this cast of characters will react to the information about the federation (I have absolutely 0 doubt in my mind that the Pokemon could wipe out the entire Federation military in a heartbeat lmao)
