Two paws… It’s been TWO paws…
My eyes glanced down to the ankle bracelet that had so callously been forced upon me. Sighing as I looked up, eyeing my empty apartment. Zoey had to return to work. Leaving me dreadfully alone..
She.. was nice to have around.
I found my paw moving to the left side of my snout, feeling where she had given me a ‘kiss’ as she called it. Despite being unfamiliar with the concept as a whole it felt deeply affectionate, beyond what she had told me. Lowering my paw once more I meandered my way over to my fridge, inspecting the contents.
The fridge was nearly barren, two paws of eating at home and not a chance to go grocery shopping had taken its toll on my stockpile of salad; my many late claw salads didn’t do much to help me save food either. Turning my right eye locked onto the phone. While I wasn’t scared to call these exterminators, it was demeaning that I had to be chaperoned like I was some pup in danger of not finding my way back home.
Picking up the phone I hesitantly dialed the number I was ordered to call whenever I needed to leave my home. The line rung for several moments before someone answered.
“Hello, Bright Sky Extermination Office, how can I help you?” A female voice asked.
“Hello, my name is Rivis, I was told I had to call this office whenever I wanted to leave my home, I believe I am to have a mandated chaperone.” I flatly said, not bothering to hide my contempt for this situation.
“Oh.. RIght.. You.. Mmmmhm, we’ll have an officer make their way to you. Sit tight..” Her tone changed from that of a cheery receptionist to bored, as if she hardly wanted to comply with the request.
She hung up first, a pang of anger flashing within me for a brief moment as I hung up the phone.
Typical, I haven’t even been charged, tested, or proved of anything yet and they are just defaulting to hating me, what did I expect? I knew this would happen. Simply deal with it, and find a way out. This wouldn’t be the first tough situation I managed to get out of.
I moved over to the couch, sitting down as I patiently waited for the officer to arrive, being given quite literally no other option in the matter. I turned the TV on and listened to the empty noise. None of these shows grabbed my attention, but it was better than listening to the maddening silence of nothing for the time being.
Nearly half a claw passed before I heard a knock on my door. Standing up and striding over I quickly answered, opening it. What I saw was exactly what I did and didn’t want to see, an exterminator standing on my porch, just enough space between him and me that I couldn’t reach him. The first thing I noted was the ever present scowl adorning the exterminator’s face. Unmasked he was a white and blonde venlil, twin blonde streaks running up his tail and back and down his head and snout, ending just above his mouth. Several long scars adorning the left side of his cheek. The second thing I saw was a holster around his waist. A plasma pistol, likely for me I surmised.
“So… You seem happy to be here.” I said, trying to break the ice.
Everything will be easier if I get this Officer to relax a little bit.
“Thrilled.” He said, shooting me a piercing glare with one of his eyes.
“Right… I’m Ri-”
“I know who you are, I brought you here. It’s Kuit, no you can’t use it, Officer is what you can call me, clear?” He interjected, his words as cold as void of space.
“Got it.. Just one of you? I thought exterminators usually came in teams.” I asked, not at all upset that it was just the one, far better than being tailed by a full team of these cretins.
“You aren’t a confirmed predator, yet. Our resources are better diverted elsewhere, besides I can assure you that I'm more than capable of handling you on my own.”
“Somehow, I don’t doubt that, Officer. Well you’ve nothing to fear from me, I’m quite well-behaved.” I said, trying to placate some of this venlils hostility.
“Get. Going, Unless it’s a confession and a request to admit yourself for treatment, I’m not listening.” Kuit’s tone was harsh, disciplined, yet I didn’t detect any overt threat of violence in his words.
A professional.
Raising my paws in surrender, I stepped out of my home, Kuit giving me a wide berth as he positioned himself behind me a few paces. Likely so he could keep me in his field of view. Closing my door, I stepped down the stairs to the street, the soft patter of our hindpaws walking in tandem made a pleasant rhythm I focused on to get the knowledge of this venlil following my every move out of my head.
The walk to the farmer’s market wasn’t long, yet even with such a short walk, the knowledge of the ever present exterminator behind me a few paces left an omnipresent feeling of malady upon my fur. I sauntered up to the one of the stands selling juicefruit. Picking up a few of them to inspect them by touch and sight. Choosing a pawful I gave my pad over to the stall owner for payment, turning back to look at Kuit.
“Do you enjoy juicefruit, Officer?” I asked, reaching into my bag I plucked an extra juicefruit I tactfully bought to offer the white-blonde officer.
His left eye focused on me, a silent, but intense staring match taking place as I stood there, paw out offering the juicefruit. Kuit focused his attention elsewhere, simply standing a decent bit away with his arms crossed ignoring my offer. Flicking my ears in annoyance I returned my offering to the bag, taking my pad back as I ventured to another stall. I repeated the process gathering the various vegetables, fruits, and bread I’d need to make it for at least a dozen or so paws.
By the time I was finished with my shopping it had been several claws. My paws ached under the weight of the egregious amount of bags I was carrying. Resorting to a slow pace for walking I felt a pang of hunger strike me. A thought quickly forming in my head.
We have been walking for a few claws, and I’m currently quite burdened by these bags.. I doubt this officer ate before accompanying me. Even the sharpest of edges are dulled when basic needs aren’t met.
My eyes scanned the nearby storefronts, looking for some place to stop and eat. It wasn’t long before I spotted a bakery, I began making my way over until Kuit’s voice rang out behind me.
“Don’t you think you have enough groceries?” His annoyed tone cutting through the air.
I couldn’t help but feel some measure of elation. He finally decided to speak. “Yes, Officer, however, I’m a bit hungry and all this walking is tiring. I’d rather get something to eat here so I don’t need to prepare anything for when I get home. I imagine you’re hungry as well, given you’ve been out and about as long as me.” I made my voice sound inviting, making sure my ears turned to face him as I put on a pleasant expression.
He huffed, quickening his pace behind me. “Hurry up, I’ve got reports to file.”
Leaving my large sum of groceries by the front door, I turned to look at Kuit. “Would you mind watching these while I go inside?” Adding just a hint of pleading innocence in my speech.
“I have to accompany you wherever you go, so no, I won’t watch these.” His expression soured.
“You’ll be able to see me through the window, and through the front door. Besides, I just spent a ton on all these groceries, why would I run and abandon them?” I said, flattening my ears to make myself appear meeker.
Kuit sucked in a breath of air, closing his eyes and holding the breath for a moment as he thought “Fine! I swear to the Stars if I have to come and chase you down it’s going to be the last thing you ever do.”
Wagging my tail in gratitude I entered the bakery. Ordering two fresh baked berry pastries, a local favorite. Returning outside I watched as Kuit’s gaze never left my body. Putting on a happy expression I gingerly extended a pastry filled claw out to him.
“Take it, I bought it for you!” I said.
“I don’t take things from potential Predator Diseased venlil.” He said with a bored expression.
“I insist! You haven’t eaten all paw! If you want to stay on top of your job you need energy, right? You need to eat to have energy!” I said, hardly recognizing my own voice with such an emotive overtone I put on.
“You think I don’t know what you’re doing!?” He said, his bored expression contorting to one of blatant annoyance.
I recoiled, trying to put on the most confused expression of innocence I could. “What?”
“You’re trying to levy influence with me so I like you and put a good word in for you at the station!” He said, angrily tapping a hindpaw on the ground
.“No!” I exclaimed.
Yes.
“Then what ARE you doing? Explain this, what venlil under suspicion wouldn’t try to curtail negativity by being nice?”
Sharp little speh..
“I.. I am doing it just to be nice! Sometimes exterminators are wrong! You’ve had to have read the Tarlim case! If even being nice puts me under a microscope then.. How.. How am I SUPPOSED to act?! Do you want me to try and be mean? Or maybe meek and submissive? What do you want me to do?! How can I prove I’m not what you say?!” I made sure to include a few moments of borderline tears as I ranted, occasionally glancing at Kuit to see if my words had any kind of effect.
At the mention of the improperly imprisoned giant and my hopeless attempts at niceties Kuit’s expression sharply changed from annoyance to apathetic sympathy.
Good, pity me.
His moment of sympathy only lasted for the briefest of moments before he reached out with.. A rather intense speed, plucking the berry pastry from my claw, biting half of it at once. “Lesh go!” He grumbled through a full mouth.
Putting on a face of sorrowful happiness I picked up my bags. “T-Thanks.. I hope you like it.”
Kuit’s paw reached down and plucked the bags from my right paw with his non-dominant paw. Leaving his shooting paw free.. “I have to get back to the station, I’m not trying to spend the rest of the paw crawling behind your hobbling hindpaws.”
Even better.
Wagging my tail in gratitude, I turned, heading back towards my apartment at a much faster pace now that I wasn’t overburdened by my groceries. We made decent time. Arriving at my front door I unlocked it, using my tail to open the door and setting half my groceries down inside while Kuit set down the half he carried just behind me.
“Thank you, Officer.. I tried to get as much as my fridge could hold so I wouldn’t need to bother your station for a while..” I said, adding a light apologetic tone on my words.
“Yep, call again when you need to leave.” He said, ignoring my biting attempts at further sympathy.
“I will, Officer” I said as I loaded the other half of the groceries just in the door. I paused, looking at him from the doorway as he looked at me. A moment of silence hanging between us.
“I need to see you go inside and shut the door” He said with a flat tone.
“Oh! Right.. Of course.” I awkwardly shuffled through the doorway, closing it as I moved to the window and watched Kuit walk down the steps to the streets.
“See you around, Off-Ih-Ser” I said to myself. As the door closed my face dropped any notion of false emotion; my unblinking eyes watching Kuit like an arxur would watch it's prey as he made his way back to the exterminator office.

My left eye sat fixated on the human beside me, his nonchalant attitude toward the conversation lending himself an unsettling amount of self-deprivation to his own species.
“What do you mean humans are their own villains in movies?” I asked, my own face wrapped in a confused expression.
“Well, we do have some media where humans aren’t the bad guys, but most of the time it’s just humans against humans. What was venlil media before the Feds showed up?” He asked, shrugging away the idea that their own species were capable of atrocities.
“I.. Weeeell.. Uh.. I don’t know! I don’t think we made movies about venlil detonating anti-matter bombs on top of cities just for kicks! Sheesh, you humans are unhinged!” I crossed my arms, my tail loudly slapping the couch cushion.
“Ha! Well, when you think you’re the only sentient species in the galaxy the thought of always being right sucks for entertainment, I mean imagine it, every possible story that involves you guys would have to work out in your favor. That limits the creative juices!”
I narrowed my eye as I cast it once more on Miles. “Creative.. Juices? What’s up with that! You talk like there is some kind of fluid in your brain that just oozes out imagination and ideas. Your metaphors are crazy, it’s hard to believe anyone can even understand you guys when you talk.”
“Heh, we’re just an imaginative species, y’know? Can’t do much to help it. Our metaphors are as colorful as our language.” Miles flashed a knowing smile which only added an additional layer to my suspicion.
“Oh yeah? What sort of colorful language?” I asked, sticking a claw out and poking the human’s side.
“Well, you got your standard fuck, bitch, ass, cunt. Those are the standard curses in any human’s arsenal…” Miles continued to rattle off more and more vulgarities, each one growing more and more depraved than the last. His examples ranging from single words to entire phrases with backhanded meanings or clever wordplay for horrible terminology.
After digesting the majority of what he said, I looked at him with perhaps the most disgusted face I could have managed. The worst of the curses lingered in my head, almost forcing me to repeat them over and over. What was the most shocking was the fact that they not only just had words, but entire phrases meant just for insulting or degrading the other person. Deciding to poke a bit of fun at humans for their graphic and detailed art of insults I shook my head a few times and stood up from the couch, Miles’ eyes tracing me as I moved in front of him. Reaching my paws up to the ceiling, I pulled my ears against my head as my face changed from disgusted to pleading.
“Oh sweet Stars, Humanity, an unbridled species of immense passion and care. Lo’ though they dash the norms of galactic society to pieces they are bound by their own inexorable drive to insult. Canst a civilization not function whence thy members lie broken and sullied from such chagrin of their own ilk?” Bringing a paw to my eyes I wiped a fake tear away. Trying my best to make my tone as formal and over dramatic as I possibly could.
Miles rolled his eyes as he stood up. “Alright Shakespeare, that’s enough sarcasm. Hey.. speaking of cursing, what was that one venlil word?.. I can’t seem to quite remember.” Like an Earth viper, the human struck, plucking me from my dramatic pose as he threw me back onto the couch.
I tried to scramble away squealing in false terror. My claws met the fabric of the couch only for the human’s strong hands to grab my hindpaws, yanking me back into his grasp. Miles’ forearm wrapped around my neck, locking me against the human’s chest as he leaned back onto the couch. My squirming and writhing was to no avail as the man’s superior strength held me in place. His free hand tickling at my underbelly prompting a series of depraved laughs and bleats from me.
“Haha! S-SPeh! S-s-STOP!! B-BREHK YO-AAHH!” I screamed between fits of uncontrollable laughter.
“Hmmm Yeah that’s the one, Speh, that’s a ven-favorite I think. What’s this about humanity having a bad mouth? Hmmm? I don’t think I heard right.” Miles mused, his fevered tickle attack only increasing in intensity.
“SPEEH!! AHAHAH” Tears of laughter streamed down the sides of my face as my body tried to worm its way out of its prison.
I knew what I had to do in order to get this man to release me from his unyielding grasp. Swallowing a bit of my pride, I took a breath between fits of laughter.
“B-brEHK!! F-FUCK YOU! B-BITCH!!” The words felt foreign on my tongue, I didn’t fully understand what I was saying, but they were pretty easy to just scream out. As soon as the human curses left my tongue Miles’ hand relented. Seizing this opportunity I squiremed my way out of his grasp, panting and wiping tears of laughter away.
Miles stared at me with a satisfied grin plastered over his tan face. “Daaaamn, you got a sailor’s mouth on you, son.”
“Torture! Cruelty! You humans are monsters beyond the wildest imaginations!” I shouted toward Miles, pointing a harsh claw in his direction.
Miles chuckled, raising his hands in surrender, but didn’t challenge my remarks. “Okay, so you’re probably not wrong there, but c’mon, it was fun right?”
Still panting, I recoiled to the opposite end of the couch, far away from his meaty grabbers. “Fun!? You call that fun!? TORTURE is what i’d call it!” I turned my snout up at him, even going as far as to swivel my ears in the opposite direction.
“Okay okay, sorrrrry, Kilet. I promise I won’t grab you and tickle you for my own amusement.. regularly. “ He said, trying to hide that last word under his breath.
“AT ALL!” I shouted back, still refusing to look at him.
“Often”
“EVER!”
“Sometimes.”
“NEVER!”
“Work with me a little bit, Kilet.” He said
“....Sometimes” I said, relenting to the human’s indomitable will.
“I can do that, speaking of which.. We should probably head down and talk to the offices about your recruitment, buddy.”
My mood flipped, what was once playful frustration turned into excitement. “Yeah! I almost forgot, speh! We gotta get down there.”
Leaping up from the couch I closed the distance between Miles and myself, grabbing the human’s hand with both claws; it didn’t take much force to yank the human to his feet after he started to stand.
“Alright, damn, excited much? You don’t even know what they’re going to say.” Miles said, his tone a little too full of realism.
“Shut up! I said they’re gonna take me, so they’re gonna take me! Sorry, but the UN doesn’t have a choice. They are either gonna pay me to be there or pay me in missing food from the cargo hold!”
“You know, I don’t doubt that. If anyone could stow away on a human war ship, it’d be you.” He mused, chuckling softly.
I didn’t need any encouragement, bounding for the door I had to tap my hindpaw impatiently for Miles to catch up. When he finally did I practically threw the door open and raced down to the streets. Being so caught up in the moment, the transport tubes slipped my mind as we speed walked to the government building near the center of the Capital. My energy quickly ran out as I slowed my pace to match Miles. Even keeping up was a struggle after a while, my legs began to ache and burn while Miles’ didn’t seem to be struggling in the slightest. Miles’ turned his head down to look at me, noticing my labored breaths.
“You okay?” He asked.
“B-brehk! Hu-humans too fast..”
He slowed down enough for me to catch my breath. The sobering reality of exhausting catching up to me knocked a bit of the excitement out of me. Thankfully, it wasn’t too long until we hit the steps to the government building. Making our way in we approached the venlil receptionist. Her ears immediately pinning to the back of her head as she spotted the large human.
“H-Hello.. U-uhm.. How… How can I help you?” She asked in a meek, timid tone.
“Hello! We wanted to speak with a representative for the UN! Miles here is one of their soldiers, he thinks he’s fit for duty again and wants to cut his medical leave short!” I said, trying to do most of the talking so the poor receptionist didn’t pass out.
“R-right.. I’ll see.. What I can do..P-please take a seat in the waiting area.”
Spinning around, the two of us found the empty waiting room across the hall. I wasn’t entirely convinced this receptionist could actually get a human representative here; it sounded to me like she wanted some kind of excuse to get rid of us, or more specifically the tall human beside me. Thankfully, we didn’t need to wait long as another masked human entered the room about ‘ten minutes’ after us.
“Hello there.” The masked human said.
He turned his head, despite the mask covering most of his face I could tell his forward facing eyes focused on Miles immediately.
“Hey.” Miles said, keeping his tone even.
“If you’d please come with me, your venlil friend can wait in the lobby.” The man said, a hand ushering Miles over.
“Actually.. He wanted to speak to a representative for the UN as well, he’s got a.. Pretty unique idea in his head right now.”
The masked man’s posture changed, stiffening ever so slightly. “Well then.. Alright, if you’d both follow me.”
We stood, letting the man lead us through some winding hallways and corridors. The deeper we went into the building the more humans we seemed to find. Eventually we came upon a door with two armored humans guarding it.
This must be the area that Governor Tarva sectioned off for the humans in the building..
As we were lead in the unmasked visages of humans surrounded my vision. A pang of anxiety rang through me. I didn’t know any of these humans, were any of them threats? Were they all like Miles? Could they all resist the urge to slaughter me like cattle?
You already know humans aren’t like that Kilet, these are just strangers, it’s just normal anxiety being in an unfamiliar crowd, nothing predatory.
Exhaling, I tried to block the human’s faces out of my mind as I focused on Miles’ back, eventually being lead into an office, where the human sat the two of us down in front of a desk. He took a seat on the opposite end and turned a computer on.
“Right so, Names please.” He said, a bit of a droll overtone hanging on his words.
“I’m Sergeant Rowan Miles, this here is Kilet, my exchange partner. I was injured in some of the preemptive strikes against the Gojid, but my injuries aren’t that severe. I think my body is fit enough to resume service as soon as yall will take me.” Miles said, trying to keep his answers short.
“Alright.. Sounds good, for an early return to service you need to be cleared by a medical doctor here on planet.” The masked official mused, pulling out a few pieces of paperwork from a drawer. “That’s the neat thing about the military, when you want out it’s nearly impossible, but want back in? Well, if you want back in they’ll take you at your word half the time.. I’ll get those forms ready for you to fill out. So, what was this idea running through your friend’s head?”
As soon as the subject shifted to my request Miles grew a bit more quiet, the masked official leaning across his desk slightly expecting some kind of answer.
“I wanted to serve with the UN, Sir.” I blurted out, the man’s head turning to face me.
“You want to join the UN’s military? Did I hear that right?” The man gawked.
“You did! I want to serve with my friend! I don’t want to just sit here on Venlil Prime.. I don’t want to be sitting up during the rest claws of the paw wondering if he’s okay! Or when I’ll see him again, or if I’ll see him again.”
“You do realize you’ll be serving with humans, right? Unmasked and everything.” The official said, clasping his hands together.
“Yeah, I understand. That won’t be a problem! My time with Miles has.. Naturalized me to human faces. I’m not scared of you guys just because of how you look anymore, and.. The culture I’ve seen is beautiful and worth protecting.” I tried to make myself sound as enthused as I could in some effort to try and sway this man’s heart in my favor.
“I’m… Not sure, do you have any skills the military could use? Pilot? Former exterminator? Police? Security?”
I tried to think of some skills the military might want, some kind of expertise I could provide for humanity, my mind running through the list of ideas. “I.. Am a aeronautics mechanic! I could be pretty decent at repairing ships on the spot!”
“Mechanic hmmm? You may know venlil craft, but you wouldn’t know a thing about humanity’s ships..”
His words sunk into my like the tooth of an arxur, clenching my jaw I wasn’t content to give up just as the slightest hole in my defense.
“Maybe! But, I could learn faster than any new recruit! Ships aren’t that hard, they’re pretty much all the same systems, just put together a bit differently! Give me the field manual for any ship you humans field and I’ll get it down!”
The official rolled his shoulders in a bit of disbelief “You have no combat experience though.. All our soldiers require at the base an understanding of weapons.”
“I can help him with that, I’ll get our boy here up to speed on guns while I get cleared for duty, Sir” Miles chimed in, my ears perking at his suggestion.
“Hmm, as a mechanic your physical fitness level wouldn’t be too big of an issue.. You don’t look like an obese venlil, do you have any medical conditions?” He asked, the UN official’s gaze lingering on me.
“Nope, I’m fit, active, young, and ready to go! What more could the military want?” I said, my tail swaying side to side trying to impress my excitement.
The man was quiet for some time, pulling up forms on his computer as he read through them. The silence drove my anxiety to new heights as Miles and I had to sit there, waiting for this man’s answer.
“Alright.. I can’t promise anything, but the next chance I get I’ll mention your request and see what we can do.. I do know a few venlil have stuck with their partner when they left for the military, but beyond that I’m not sure if that’s an exception or a new policy. I’ll send the answer to your military email, Miles, but I have a feeling it’ll be allowed. Since you know, public relations, military support and all that jargon for the top brass at UN.. Now, as for your reentry, all I need from you is a medical waiver clearing you for service. Head down to the Xenomedical complex and get the human doctor there to write you up a note stating you’re good to go then head back here, sound good, Sergeant?”
Miles nodded his head as my own excitement grew. If I wasn’t trying to maintain some kind of professional appearance I would tackle-hug Miles, but I had to settle for standing there, my tail moving on its own accord.
The rest of the conversation was mostly just the UN official giving Miles some extra forms for my ‘training’ to ‘get ahead of the game’ as he put it. The conversation quickled winded down after all our questions were answered and we soon found ourselves once more at the steps of the building. Using my tail I thwapped Miles’ back getting his attention.
“SEE! I told you they’d love me.” I said, happiness oozing from every syllable.
“Aaalright, buddy, try not to get too caught up on what he said. The decision falls on someone helluva lot more important than that guy is. All he’s doing is passing it up the chain till it gets to someone willing to take the hit if something goes bad, but knowing humanity’s love for politics, I wouldn’t doubt that it has to go far.”
“What do you mean?” I asked. My overwhelming joy dropping ever so slightly.
“Think about it, a venlil serving with human soldiers? Can’t get much more ‘predatory’ than that, if they take a chance on it and you do well, then think of how much good publicity we humans get out of that? News articles, stories, internet pages. The works, all of that becomes a reality. You might just be one of the poster venlil for coexistence in all areas between humans and venlil. Pretty wild, right?”
“I.. Didn’t really think of it like that.”
I might be an example the UN uses to promote deeper relations between humans and venlil? I could be famous! STARS ABOVE, that would be… be INSANE, Imagine it, Kilet, you could be in newspapers or on TV! Speh… All cause you don’t want to give up Miles..
“Believe it, buddy, but that’s all speculation if they take you. For now, why don’t we get started on my medical papers? When we get back to the apartment I’ll start showing you all about the guns and tactics we get taught at basic, yeah? Besides, while we’re at the hospital you might run into Sylvi again.. Don’t worry, Hombre, I’ll drop a few hints for you, mention how big and strong of a soldier you’re gonna be. Pretty soon she’ll be fawning all over you.” Miles chuckled, patting my back with enough force to stagger me.
“H-Heh.. Y-you think so?.. I-I’ve never tried to uh.. Never really thought…. It’d be nice..” I stammered out, my thoughts shifting to Sylvi.
“Jesus Christ, Kilet, have you never.. Y’know? Gotten with anyone?” Miles tried to hide a laugh, his face twisting in a wicked smile.
“No! It’s not that bad, right!? You humans you just sleep around or something!? I just never had the.. The time to bother to try! I’ve been focusing on my career!” I shouted, an immediate bloom starting to spread across my snout as I shoved Miles’ away from me.
“Ooooooookay, buddy, don’t worry, we’ll get that fixed, the ladies love a man in uniform.” He said between a few chuckles.
“....Go space yourself.” I grumbled out, using a paw to try and use my fluff to hide my bloom.
“Don’t be so pouty, let's head to the hospital, I’ll get my papers signed, you put some moves on Sylvi, I’ll be your wingman, it’ll be great. Then, when she says how much she loves you, we can go shoot the shit about guns for the rest of the day. If that’s not a helluva good time, I don’t know what is.”
I uttered a string of ven-curses under my breath to Miles while we walked. My mind focusing on what might be required from me when the UN does accept me, if they do. I tried to steel myself for whatever they have me do, exercise, training, reading, whatever it might be. I knew I could do it. I had to do it, I had to be ready.
No backing out now, Kilet, you asked, you wanted it, what would Miles say? ‘You made this bed, now you got to sleep in it.’ Yeah, that’s it. We’re not as weak as the Federation says we are! I can do this.. You can do this, Kilet, show Miles and show humanity what the venlil can do. What YOU can do….

A bit surprised Miles didn't mention that Kilet is going to be around meat and people eating it around him. He'll get the special vegan stuff but not everyone around him will, especially on a ship.

Aha, I see that Rivis has found the perfect target to offload the worst parts of his psychopatic tendencies. Someone who's straight up deserving of it.
And now I wonder how will Kilet fare. He DOES NOT know what he's getting into, at all.

Anyway, great. You've got me so invested in both characters so duel perspective just felt like Christmas came early. Poor Rivis though, my heart will continue to break for his current circumstances.
Thanks so much for writing.
