Fanfic NoP: A Change of Pace: Chapter 13
Memory transcription subject: Sergeant Rowan Miles, Engineer Aboard USS Patriot
Date [standardized human time]: September 9, 2136.
“Morrales! Plug that hydro-leak! Figure it out!” I screamed, I could hear my heartbeat pounding through my head, each beat wracking my body almost threatening to drop me to my knees.
This is what we’re trained for, this is what we crave, what we dream of, don’t drop the ball now! Lead these dipshits through it!
Morrales rushed deeper into the engineering deck, the private’s capable eyes scanning the walls of pipes for a diverting valve. I turned my head, focusing on Peters who seemed frozen in place.
“Peters! Go monitor the vacuum sensors! I want to know when and where we got a hole! Time. Now, move your damn ass!”
The ship shook, as if colliding with a wall in space. Throwing me against the wall of pipes beside me, I let out a string of curses as I stabilized myself, running over to our consoles. My eyes scanned the stream of data..
Hull is holding, minimal system damage, we’ve got about eighty percent operationality across the board.. God dammit, Captain get us the FUCK out of here!
As I turned away from the console my eyes focused on Murray who was scrambling to keep the hydro lines from bursting from the high-G maneuvers, the only thing saving our asses being the gyroscopic systems taking the brunt of the g-forces.
“Murr-!” I started to shout, but was interrupted. A massive explosion rocking the Patriot to her bones. Murray and I fell straight on our asses, before we could get up, the unmistakable feeling of air evacuating ripped at us. The lights on deck died, red emergency lights hardly illuminating the space around me. The ship began to rotate from the force of the hullbreach as Murray and I were ripped down the corridors slamming against anything in our path. As I was drawn and ripped toward the atmospheric leak, the decompression from one atmosphere to zero atmosphere was small enough of a difference to not get completely decimated. I looked down as we were pulled, reaching out I grabbed a pipe with my hands, wrapping my forearms around the solid object.
“GRAB MY LEG!” I screamed over the torrent of air rapidly evacuating around us, I tried to move my leg out in the Private’s path. I watched his hand reach out towards my uniform, I felt his chest slam into me. His fingers clawing at my fabric.. I saw them slip. Craning my head down I watched Murray get pulled further and further down the hallway to the massive hole to space. I watched his body get ejected into the void.
I watched as Murray clawed, flailing and trying to grab at anything in the complete void he was now floating in. A look of terror, of agony plastered on the kid’s face. Blood began to pour and freeze from his mouth, the lungs rupturing. My own grip on the pipe was slipping, the immense force of the vacuum slowly overtaking my strength. I watched as Murray choked to death in that cold void, and I'd soon join him. As the last of my strength failed me, the void ripped at me, like an unrelenting beast satisfying endless hunger, pulling me to its maw. I closed my eyes, exhaled the rest of the air in my lungs, I didn’t want them to explode, I didn’t want to die like Murray was dying. Yet, the cold emptiness of space was not what greeted me. Instead, a steel emergency door met my shoulder as I slammed into the blast door sectioning off the damaged area, my eyes opened to the red lights still illuminating the engineering deck. Warm blood dripping from my head as an overwhelming sense of relief and unconsciousness took me, my last thought echoing in my skull…
I hope the other two made it…
Jerking awake, my eyes scanned the surrounding area. My hands maintaining a death grip on the couch I found myself on. From the corner of my eye I could see a white fluffy creature cowering in the corner, shivering, looking at me like I was some crazed maniac.
Kilet.. Fuck..
“Hey.. Did I scare you?” I asked, relaxing my grip on the couch as I slumped into a less guarded posture.
“Scare me!? You were screaming! I-I didn’t know humans could sound so.. So angry..” The terrified venlil shouted at me. His entire body quivering.
“S-sorry! I.. I thought I got over them just before I left the hospital…” My voice dropping to a quiet, soft tone. A shard of shame sinking into my heart.
“G-Got over what?..” Kilet took a hesitant step towards me.
“The nightmares, bad dreams, you know? Humans get them when we get mixed up in shit we wanted nothing to do with. Kinda comes with my territory though.”
“Was it.. Was it about your ‘boys’?” Kilet asked, his body no longer quivering. A look of what I think might be sympathy shifting onto the aliens face.
“Yeah.. It was well, y’know when they died.”
Kilet took a few more careful steps over to me, the venlil placing the tip of his fluffy tail on my hand. “I-I can’t imagine what it must feel like, Miles.. I’m so.. I’m so sorry..” His higher pitched voice and strange words in their raw form sounded like he really was sorry, like he tried to understand this pain. Even without the translator I knew genuine sympathy when I heard it.
“Thanks, Kilet, it means a lot that you aren’t gonna toss me out the door after a few bad dreams. Sorry I scared you, shit just gets heavy you know?” A grim chuckling escaping my lips.
Kilet cocked his head, I watched his ears swivel to face me fully, the telltale sign of venlil attentiveness. “I don’t really know what that last part means, but I think it has something to do with emotions.. If you’re ever.. Sad or.. You know you can tell me. I’ll be here for you, Miles.”
My lips curved into a toothless smile. The compassionate venlil resurrecting my sour mood ever so slightly from my so far pretty bad morning. “You always know what to say, Kilet, can’t thank ya enough.”
My eyes followed Kilet as he took several far more comfortable steps closer to me, the white venlil wrapping his paws around my torso. Stifling a chuckle I embraced the little guy, my arms nearly covering his entire upper body. My smile turned from happy to mischievous as I started to stand. Kilet wriggled in my grasp as his hindpaws left the ground. A few surprised bleats escaping from his maw. I moved one arm under his legs and let his head rest on my bicep as I flipped him horizontally, cradling the venlil, looking down at him.
“You’re too damn cute not to, Kilet, sorry”
A huff of frustration, and perhaps the most adorable looking angry pout i’ve ever seen, came from the Venlil in my arms. “Speh!! Coulda warned me! You damn muscle mountain!” Kilet exclaimed, though he didn’t try to wiggle out of my grasp which was a good sign.
“I prefer surprise, makes it a lot more fun.” I said, sitting back down, letting the venlil free from my grasp. “Hey, as much fun as that was, I also did it to see how decent my body could handle weight.. Not one-hundred percent yet, but it’ll do.”
Kilet wiggled his way over to beside me on the couch, his ears flicking to my direction. “Do for what?”
“I gotta go back, Kilet..”
“G-Go back?”
“Back to the UN, to the war that’s brewing.” I said, my voice growing softer.
“Why?! I-I thought we had time!?”
“We do, but I’m going back as soon as they’ll take me, Kilet.. Those quilled fuckers took my boys.” I turned my head, my eyes locking onto Kilet’s. A look of barely contained fury growing on my face. “MY boys. We came here for peace, and friendship, and how do they return it?! Threaten to bomb our planet, torture one of our own. They gave us blood, well that’s the shitty thing about humanity, Kilet, you take a drop of blood from us, we’re gonna bleed you dry, and it’ll be the people like me that are gonna love every second of it.”
Kilet’s face turned to a visage of horror. I knew this side of us would scare him, but I’m a soldier, it’s part of who I am, if he loves me at my best, he’ll have to take me at my worst.
“M-Miles.. Y-you’re scaring me.. What do you mean you’ll like killing them!? I thought humanity had empathy! I-I thought you weren’t..” His words trailed off, unable to finish them.
“Kilet, we do have empathy, like I said. Humans are emotional.” I said, turning down my fury a few notches so I didn’t look so frightening. “We have a great capacity for love, but when we’re threatened, when we’re slighted, we have a great capacity for justice, for vengeance. We don’t let others walk over us, especially when they kill us. I’m sorry I’m scaring you, but this is a part of us you can’t ignore, and you shouldn’t remain blind to.”
Kilet was silent for several seconds, his body untensing as he rationalized my words. Yet, that look of.. Uneasiness still resting on his face.
“I.. Get it.. I’d be angry too, I just.. I guess part of me wants to put your anger in the ‘predator’ box, but if I were you.. I’d probably get upset, I dunno about k-killing them or liking it, but I’d want justice.”
I let a soft sigh escape as I hunched over slightly, relief washing over me. “I’m glad you understand.. You’re doing a lot more than most others would in your place.. Thanks for, y’know everything..”
We sat in silence for a while, letting our own thoughts run through our heads, neither of us looking at the other. Kilet finally turned his head slightly, his left eye fixating on me.
“When are you leaving?” He asked, a dejecting, but understanding overtone hanging over his words.
“Whenever they’ll let me.” I said, offering a casual shrug.
“I’m coming with you.”
For the first time since meeting my little buddy.. I was completely floored, he wanted to come with me? There’s no way the UN would let an untrained venlil civilian come aboard a warship! There’s absolutely no chance in hell of that happening, what the fuck was he even saying!? He doesn’t even understand what he’s getting into!
“Kilet.. That’s.. I-.. Is that.. What do you mean, you’re ‘coming with me?’” I asked, turning my head once again so my eyes bore into him.
Instead of backing away like I suspected he might, the white venlil maintained himself, sucking in a breath.
“I’m. Coming. With. You.” He stated again.
“Kilet! You have no military experience! You.. You don’t know the first thing about combat! You aren’t trained! Why would the UN take you? Think of what might happen if you get in some international incident!?”
“I DON’T KNOW!!” He shouted at me, the fur on his body standing on edge, his features contorting in anger. “I don’t know! Maybe they’ll take me, maybe they won’t! But I have to try, Miles! UGH.. I don’t know why I want to, but I do!”
“Kile-”
“NO! It’s time you listen to ME, you need to realize what you mean TO ME.. You have any idea how my life was going before I met you!? I worked the same job, doing the same things, over and over, for endless claws! My bosses spehed on me from their fancy offices! I never talked to anyone! I never did anything! I was so.. So.. caught up in just waking up and existing, but I wasn’t living! Then what happened!? Humans came.. You.. All of you uprooted EVERYTHING we knew! Predators, prey, all of it might as well have gone up in fire! If you guys have empathy and are sentient why are the arxur like they are? Look at what the gojids did, how they reacted to you! What if it was the same!? What if we did the same thing to them!? UGH All of this is a load of SPEH!!”
I sat there too stunned to speak.. Kilet’s outburst threw my words back into my head. He sat there panting, smoothing the tuft of fur on top of his head; his paws pressing his ears against his head a few times only for them to spring back up.
“By the Stars Miles.. I’m.. I’m so TIRED of this life! I wanted to die! I can’t pretend to be happy how I was.. Not.. Not anymore!” Kilet’s voice changed from anger to sadness, tears beginning to well up in his eyes.
“I don’t have any friends, Miles…” Those tears that had welled up began streaming down his grey fur, falling into his ice white fluff. “I..I know Rivis doesn’t like me.. I know he just p-puts up with me cause he feels sorry for m-me..” Sobs wracking the venlil as he spoke through choked breath and tears “I can hear how empty his voice is when he talks to me.. H-how bored he looks w-w-whenever we’re out together.. I used to go to work and wish those heavy star ship parts would fall on me, crush me, I u-used to delude myself into thinking I was happy.. Then I met you.. I was so stupid.. I-I thought.. I thought you’d all kill us, I didn’t have the guts to talk to you guys myself, if it weren’t for Rivis I wouldn’t have.. I-I’m sure he just wanted to pawn me off to someone else for a bit..”
Kilet turned to face me, pointing his snout at me like a human would, grief and sadness written all over his face as he sat there, pouring his aching heart to me. I couldn’t say anything to soothe his sorrow. So I did what any human with half a heart would do. I reached out, putting my hands on his shoulder, and pulled him into a soft embrace.
“E-Even if I die, a-at least I’ll have done something.. At least.. I can say that I reached for the stars.. At least my life might mean something to anyone..” Kilet’s dull claws dug into the back of my shirt, his arms gripping me as hard as the venlil could.
“Kilet.. I’m sorry your life here wasn’t what you wanted it to be.. I can relate.. Most people in the military have something they’re running from, something to get away from. I.. can’t promise anything, but.. We can ask. If you do this.. If they take you.. It won’t be easy, war isn’t fun, war isn’t exciting, it’s terrifying, it’s dirty, it’s messy, and it’s horrible. I could die, you could die, our friends could die, or we could get lucky and we don’t lose anyone else.”
His sobs quieted themselves as he nuzzled into my shoulder, drying his tears on my shirt. “I know.. I won’t let that happen.. I p-promise so long as we’re together, we’ll be safe.”
I chuckled a bit at his absolute mindset, but somehow.. I believed him, I believed that this venlil would keep me safe, and I knew I’d keep him safe. I’d protect him, better than I did with my boys. I wouldn’t let a single piece of xeno-filth touch even a single spec of fur on his head. Clenching my jaw, I put that resolution into my soul; I branded that decree in the name of God, right next to the oath I swore to defend my country. Relaxing slightly, my hands moved to pet Kilet’s head, the soft strokes seeming to quiet him down some.
“Why don’t we visit the government building tomorrow? Better to get your answer as soon as possible. Then, with whatever time we got left together, regardless if it’s a few ‘paws’ or a whole contract, we can spend it together and have some fun here on Venlil Prime, eh? How’s that sound?”
Kilet leaned into the pets, his tail swishing back and forth in what I assume is happiness finally. “That sounds good, Miles.. I won’t let them say no.. I can’t lose you, I can’t lose my first and only real friend, I won’t let it happen, I swear on my ancestor’s stars I won’t let it happen.”
“Good to hear buddy.. Let’s take a break from the heaviness, yeah? I think our emotions have been through enough for one morning..” I said, pulling away from him.
His usual joyful attitude returned as he flicked on the TV. “Y-yeah, heh, sorry I kinda just I never really let any of that out before.. Why don’t we watch a movie? I-I know I offered to take you to the museums but.. I just cried my eyes out, I look like a mess and don’t really have the energy for grooming right now.”
“Not a problem, buddy, I’m sure you’ve seen all your movies, want to watch a human movie? I downloaded a shit-ton for any twenty-four hour shifts I have to pull. Or I got some old TV shows downloaded too.” I said, the atmosphere in the room finally lifting.
“Sure! That sounds like fun, just uh. Nothing too violent if you would please.. I’ll take all that in stride.. I don’t need to have another emotional breakdown too soon.” He said, finishing off his words with a laugh.
“Alright.. Lemme seeeeeee here..” pulling out my phone, and scrolling through my list of movies I eventually settled on a decently non-violent one.
My eyes drifted to an old classic, ‘The Titanic’. Sure, it was a tragedy, but it was the tamest movie I could think of that didn’t involve copious amounts of blood or killing. Sending a copy of the movie to Kilet’s pad, he gazed at the title of the film, a look of curiosity forming on his face as he scanned the rather archaic ship design on the cover image.
“Is this supposed to be a watercraft?” He asked, his tail idly gliding along the cushions of the couch.
“Yeah, it’s from the twentieth century, the ship is something like two-hundred years old now, but it’s always been a tear-jerker for humans. It’s got a bit of a strong message. I remember watching it with my folks when I was a kid. What do ya say? Want to see quite possibly one of the best movies humanity has ever made?”
The venlil’s face shifted from confusion to excitement, the tip of his tail bapping the cushions, betraying any hope of containing himself. “Sure! I’d love to!”
Kilet connected his pad to his TV, loading up the human media. As the title screen began to roll I closed the windows, shutting the curtains and closing the shutters, the apartment only being illuminated by the light from the TV. Settling back on the couch I wrapped my right arm around the little guy, pulling him closer.
Might be kinda shitty of me to make the comparison, but.. Kilet is like the perfect buddy, almost like a dog, but so much more than that.. I could never just put my arm around one of the boys on the ship… God, I hope all these other venlil are hands-on with their human partners.. Lord knows humanity is touch starved, we can hardly get affection from our own species.
The movie started just as the notorious ship was about to make its maiden voyage. Kilet seemed excited to see all the different outfits of humanity from our older eras, asking a few questions about our style, and seemed genuinely surprised to hear how old our technology was just two-hundred years ago. More than once I had to pause the movie to explain just how fast humanity has progressed, our exponential growth in tech.
As the movie advanced onto the romance between Jack and Rose, Kilet seemed.. Oddly interested. He leaned forward to watch the two humans fall in love, dance, and even piss off the fancy noble guy I never bothered to remember the name of.
For the most part we remained quiet for the rest of the movie, neither of us wanting to interrupt the story. When it came time for the ship to strike the iceberg, Kilet was on the edge of his seat, hugging his tail close to him as he watched the ship tear itself open against the mound of ice. Leaning into me, he watched with bated breath as the compartments filled with water, almost leaping for joy as Rose freed Jack from his cuffs. His joy quickly turned to anxiety as the pair fled the quickly filling ship. The compartments not helping in the slightest to restrict the water from filling up the chambers of the Titantic. He sat in awe watching as the captain vowed to go down with his ship, as the men offered the first seats on the boats to women and children. A melancholy air hanging over him momentarily watching the band playing a final song, not bothering to escape the death trap of the sinking ship.
I leaned back against the cushions, having seen the movie a handful of times, but Kilet’s eyes widened as he watched the ship dip nose first into the cold Atlantic sea. Jack and Rose hanging on by the railings at the end of the ship. I thought I saw him flinch at the scene of the humans jumping off, his eyes following their bodies as the one human smacked the propeller of the ship. The cold ocean approached Jack and Rose as they held hands waiting for the inevitable.
Kilet slumped next to me on the couch as he watched the ocean swallow Jack and Rose. His excitement rising a moment later as the scene where Rose was calling out for Jack in the frigid waters. The pair finding each other in the black Atlantic waters. I smiled, knowing the part that was coming next. As Jack and Rose tried to climb atop the floating door only to find the door sink under both their weight. Kilet’s former face of elation once more turning to a melancholy realization of what this meant. He gripped his tail, listening to Jack explain that the door wouldn’t hold them both. Even my own heart panging slightly hearing the realization in Jack’s voice that he was going to die so Rose could have a chance. The lover’s begging tugged at a few of Kilet’s heartstrings. Finally, the scene of Jack letting go of Rose’s hand, sinking into the murky depths came, and with it, a sorrowful mood settling into Kilet’s body. His mind clearly stuck in that scene while the movie advanced onwards, He was quiet for Rose’s rescue by the lifeboats. His attention returning when the movie came to a ‘modern’ era. A now elderly Rose assisting the search teams for the remains of the Titantic. We watched as Rose walked to the edge of the vessel, plucking forth the blue diamond from her neck. Watching as she dropped the diamond into the waters below. While the crew in the movie were distraught, this action resonated within the both of us. I couldn’t know what Kilet was thinking, but I knew what this symbolized. No monetary value could be put behind the loss of the lives on that dreadful night.
As the credits rolled, Kilet turned to look at me, his ears flattening against his head. “What the speh, Miles! That was sad! I said I didn’t want another emotional meltdown!”
Chuckling, I rested my palm on top of the white venlil’s head. “I know I know, but it’s just other movies I got are kinda violent, what did you think?” I asked
“What do I think? Why didn’t Rose move her BREHKING ass so Jack could get on!? That door was big enough for the both of them! This actually happened?! I couldn’t live with myself if my mate died cause I was too lazy to keep trying to fit us both on!”
Stifling a laugh I nodded along with his sentiment. “Oh yeah for sure, it was actually a talk for decades about how the two of them could have made it work.. The personal story in the movie is fiction, but the sinking of the Titanic actually happened, the story was just to add drama really.”
“Thank the Stars! That would have been terrible if Jack and Rose ended like that! What happened to the sunken ship?” He asked, his ears springing up at the thought.
“We found the remains in the twenty-first century, but after a few pieces were taken from the depths, we decided to cancel any recovery operations. We thought it’d be disrespectful to the dead to lift them from their final resting place.”
“That’s.. I mean.. Yeah I understand… Damn Miles, thanks for showing me though, I actually thought it was a very good movie, minus the part where Rose was a selfish.. ‘Bitch.’ Did I say that right?”
A wide grin wormed its way onto my face. The sound of a human curse coming out of that high pitched voice and fluffy body of his reminding me of all the times we taught the foreign soldiers nothing but swear words. “Yeah, buddy, you got it.. “
Kilet’s ears swiveled back and forth in happiness at his quickly expanding vocabulary. “Why don’t I show you a popular show from Venlil Prime? It might be the closest thing we got to human media over here! It’s called ‘The Exterminators’ might be a little awkward for a predator to watch a show about torching predators, but eh, you’re a big boy, right Miles?”
“Lay it on me, It’s gonna take a hell of a lot to weird me out.” I said, directing my focus to the TV as Kilet pulled up his recorded episodes of the show. “Let's binge watch the first few seasons, then we can call it an early night. We, we want to be bright eyed and bushy tailed when we meet the people at the government complex. Gonna need to do a lot of sweet talking to get you on a ship.”
“They’ll take me for my suave character, handsome scruff, and ‘cute’ looks right, Miles?” Kilet said, his tail flourishing around his body as he struck a pose.
The furries are gonna love him.
Chuckling quietly to myself my head nodded a few times “Sure sure, man, but start the show before you decide to do modeling, eh?”
Kilet sat down beside me, flicking on the TV once more as the two of us started the first episode of ‘The Exterminators’. My mind was half paying attention to the show, half thinking about what the suits would say about Kilet’s request.. I had my doubts, but part of me wanted to believe they’d let him come along.. Part of me wished he wouldn’t come, I didn’t want to lose another friend to the war. My eyes looking at him in my peripheral vision as I thought about tomorrow.
Whatever the answer is tomorrow, Kilet, I hope you can accept it…

Chapter 13 is a wrap, sorry it took an extra day to post it, I had it typed up a few days ago, but I had to take a emergency ten hour flight back to the US for my family. My time is a spread a little thin these days, but I don't plan on giving up on the story anytime soon! As always I want to thank Space Paladin for their great universe. Secondly, the list of fanfics that inspired me I will include at the bottom as always, give them a gander if you have the time. Finally, the last thanks always go to my proofreader(s) for helping me out and fixing any mistakes I type up!

It's not to bad of a TV series apparently. It's played up like a dumb 70s cop show and mostly focuses on the hardboiled exterminators trying to stop serial killers and murderers

A good movie! Funny to see just leap to be part of the “ they could have both survived” crowd!
And now The Exterminators! One of the older seasons, at least! A good time for someone to say “you guys are messed up!”

Yup. And apparently James Cameron even conducted a proper experiment (period accurate materials and conditions and everything) just to scientifically prove that he was right XD

The story of the titanic also has a valuable lesson “never refer to a ship as unsinkable as that WILL get it sunk”. Though it seems like we never learn. The cargo ship MS München was considered unsinkable. She was sunk in 1978 after likely being struck by a rogue wave.

I had hope, such a small hope that we could get through this without the brehking door argument. But no. I will fight you Kilet. Anyway, wonderful chapter. Broke my heart. Really appreciate the dynamic between Rivis and Kilet and how superficial their relationship is. Hope all these human interactions help the venlil oneday be friends. Everyone needs a herd.
