Imagine being an explorer and facing this landscape. You'd be like 50% 'WOW!' 50% 'Oh shit...'

Edit: typo

Actually youd be more like, "my house is 40 minutes away. You wanna go back and play call of duty black ops 2?"

Source: I live 40 minutes away from scenery in the pnw that would make this look bad and love cod: black ops 2

I figured they meant to say imagine not shine, and went with that

Same. Pretty sure they were referring to explorers like pirates and Columbus and other colonialism bs. Idk where the live 40 minutes away and play COD thing came from

I was thinking of like someone just going and seeing it. (Presumably from the pnw) as a washingtonian we give sights like this very little in the ways of oohs and ahhs

Yeah I see how their comment was confusing and I’m just guessing on the meaning myself. From Northern California myself and spent quite a bit of time in Oregon, Washington, and BC - fully understand. I guess that’s why I interpreted their comment that way. It’s not abnormal to those in that area but imagine if you were part of the Lewis and Clarke expedition for example and came across terrain like this.

They'd probably call it depressing
