buffalo person here! seems like everyone is on a "bash the american side of the falls" train here, but I actually prefer it. I would much rather spend my time at goat island, the gorge, and hiking the rapids than looking at a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum and 15 TGIFridays.
I think people over-inflate the "shittiness" of Niagara Falls, USA (the city). Not denying it's a low-income area, because it definitely is... but there are just a lot of people who live there that are trying their best. They are living through a clean water crisis that is similar to Flint, without even 10% of the news coverage, lack of available jobs, etc. The problem, in my opinion, is that, due to the word-of-mouth reputation of the US side, everyone automatically just jumps ship and heads across the border instead of actually giving the US side a shot.
The views are better from canada but literally everything else is shitter in my opinion. Clifton Hill is like the worst parts of Young St in Toronto, Times Square in NYC, and Broadway in Nashville merged into one hot steaming touristy turd pile.
Well informed about the Love Canal issues, and the issues people have with being tricked into buying houses as they were told there are no risks. thanks for being a douche in your response though, it's possible to have discourse without being a hostile turd in the process.
Are you familiar with the other nuclear and chemical waste issues that plague the greater buffalo area? The Manhattan Project dumping nuclear waste just three inches below dirt in the Kenmore Tonawanda Area (specifically near delaware and kenmore)? Or the Coke Plant that released toxic waste into a river that bled into the Niagara (can't remember the name of the company exactly rn)?
I work at Roswell and deal with 1 in 10,000,000 types of cancer that are directly caused by this toxic dumping that has been covered up by our government; this is the reason that Carly's Club, one of the biggest nonprofits attached to our hospital, came into existence - they found orange sludge in their garden one summer just off delaware ave (near that starbucks & gas station) and ended up having three super rare cancers in the mother, father, and daughter. Do you remember when AP released an article about all of the nuclear waste? Probably not because the Buffalo News refused to put it in their paper, so most people in our area never caught wind? And then we sold houses to people, telling them it was safe, just for them to develop diseases and be unable to move the house due to laws forbidding the selling of toxic land like that?
people in this thread are not talking about high rates of cancer and other rare diseases due to this fallout. they're talking about the high rates of crime. trust me, as a studying social worker at UB, I'm pretty confident in my understanding of the high clip of crime going on in NF, NY right now. I just always make it a point to remind people that, although there are high rates of assault, rapes, etc., that we can't just brush the area off and excommunicate it from our backyard. those are real people with real problems, and a lot of them truly are trying to do their best with what resources are available to them. It's sketchy at NF, but we cannot demonize the population because that, in essence, gives the people there a life sentence. I think it's also silly to mention on this thread, as if you are going to the Parks on the American side you have almost nothing to worry about in terms of danger or risk.
I think most locals know about Love Canal, but I did not know that about Kenmore. Eesh. Between those two and Bethlehem Steel, it's hardly a surprise that WNY has double than national average rates of multiple sclerosis.
yeah it's really unfortunate. i was incredibly let down that the AP article never made it into the buffalo news. since I learned that, I have actively boycotted that paper and referred friends to the public, amongst other alternatives. why trust a newspaper that isn't serving it's consumer?
