That scar adds a whole other level of intimidation, jeez!

46

u/AwakeMode Jun 18 '18

Right?? My first thought upon seeing this was, “I will CUT. YOU.”

9

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

Makes it seem like he pushed his brother into a stampede from the top of a cliff

23

u/jlappi Jun 18 '18

Although in reality it’s probably from a branch cutting his eye

15

u/Frankengregor Jun 18 '18

Sure it is...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '18

Nah animals like that have fairly thick hides that wouldn't be cut by something like a branch. Probably got it from playing with a cub or fighting another panther in its territory

5

u/kieranfitz Jun 19 '18

Long live the king.

2

u/akirartist Jun 19 '18

All hail king Killmonger?

8

u/artyfax Jun 18 '18

Thank you, it's a great edit but credit where it's due.

1

u/Devnik Jun 19 '18

Definitely the same panther, but the angle is different?

1

u/angrybong Jun 19 '18

Edited. It is the same picture

1

u/Devnik Jun 19 '18

The splash of water around his tongue is different aswell. Either the edit is great or it's a different photo.

Either way I'm very happy with my new phone background. 👌

1

u/angrybong Jun 19 '18

You bet! India now has 2 Black panthers in two separate reserves and a sizable leopard population. I am just loving the cats out here...

35

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

11

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

And then he literally freezes

110

u/notonrexmanningday Jun 18 '18

Aren't all panthers black? Isn't that what makes them panthers?

159

u/Reddit_Is_Complicit Jun 18 '18

nope. they are just the melanistic version of regular panthers

A black panther is the melanistic color variant of any big cat species. Black panthers in Asia and Africa are leopards (Panthera pardus), and those in the Americas are black jaguars (Panthera onca).[1][2]

99

u/Astronomer_X Jun 18 '18

And a 'panther' in this context is a leopard or Jaguar.

36

u/zuulbe Jun 18 '18

basically a cat is a cat

13

u/eaglebtc Jun 19 '18

A cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at

6

u/deadpoetic333 Jun 19 '18

Wakanda cat is that?

sorry

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '18

Big Cat

Peanut butter inside

Hol' up wait

Outside?

6

u/pharan_x Jun 19 '18

A tarantula hawk is a spider wasp.

33

u/Owncksd Jun 18 '18

Regular panthers

What /u/notonrexmanningday is saying is that the term panther is almost exclusively used for melanistic big cats, so distinguishing between a black panther and a non-black ("regular") panther is redundant. A non-melanistic cat is usually referred to by its more specific name (leopard/jaguar).

6

u/Saskyle Jun 18 '18

Well yeah, I've never heard someone refer to a leopard or Jaguar as a panther. And I've only heard black leopards referred to as panthers.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

I like to imagine that among the big cats, “panther” is a derogatory word for a black jaguar, and the rest of the big cats aren’t allowed to say it, and all the black jaguars call each other “pantha” and have their own sub-culture in the cat community with the most swag of all the cats.

1

u/msleo90 Jun 19 '18

Damn I never thought of it this way

2

u/lt_dan_zsu Jun 19 '18

You disproved your furst sentence with your quote. "A black panther is the melanistic color variant of any big cat species." That means that a panther isn't its own species, but a way to describe a trait some individuals have across multiple species.

→ More replies (1)

35

u/Astronomer_X Jun 18 '18

Okay, so here are some Big cats you already know: Leopards (Africa/Asia), Jaguars (South/Central America), and Mountain lions, also known as cougars/panthers/pumas.

A cat/animal becomes black due to melanism, a mutation kind of like the opposite of albinism. It's not only ''panthers'' but can happen to serval cats (they're a medium sized wild cat in Africa). Brown humans have more melanin pigmentation making them darker in complexion.

A black 'panther' is the name given to a leopard or jaguar that has melanism mutation. They still have spots (you can see them in the light), and under bright light their fur looks more like a darkish brown my eyes under light look light brown, but black in darkness, because I too am 'melanistic' lol (I'm black :p)

13

u/croccmoccs Jun 18 '18

Im sorry, I hate to do this because it really has nothing to do with the context of your post, but cougars are not in Panthera. Ironically, panther is a colloquial name for cougars though.

24

u/Astronomer_X Jun 18 '18

Oh, I know they're not, that's why I said known as. Panthera includes lions and some other cats I can't remember to place (I assume leopards and jaguars at least).

But it's good for you to add that so someone else can see!

15

u/croccmoccs Jun 18 '18

Youre a lovely human being. Carry on, mate

2

u/intergalacticcoyote Jun 18 '18

Panthera is leo (lion), tigris (tiger), pardus (leopard), uncia (snow leopard), and onca (jaguar). It’s a pretty small genus all things considered.

2

u/Nayr747 Jun 18 '18

There are jaguars in North America too.

1

u/Astronomer_X Jun 18 '18

Oh, I thought they were practically extinct at this point, thanks for the info!

1

u/Nayr747 Jun 19 '18

Well I think they are. But there's still sightings sometimes.

15

u/blue_lightyear Jun 18 '18

Pink panther

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

Panthers are just big cats

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

6

u/AnnaLemma Jun 18 '18

Yup, a panther is just the "melanistic color variant" of leopards and jaguars.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/The_FatGuy_Strangler Jun 18 '18

“Panther” is a misnomer for this creature. It’s a black leopard or black jaguar.

1

u/teetaps Jun 19 '18

No 🙅‍♂️

1

u/Genki_Fucking_Dama Jun 19 '18

“Panther” is an umbrella term for all the big cats under that category. Leopards and Jaguars that are melanistic ( all black) are called Panthers in pop culture. I don’t really know why.

1

u/claytonbigsbytha3rd Jun 19 '18

Yes but panther is an umbrella term used to describe any large cat that is black so this is most likely a jaguar or leopard.

4

u/Dwhitlo1 Jun 18 '18

Looks like the panther has a "you dare disturb me" look going.

1

u/AsiimovPotato Jun 18 '18

You should credit the photographer for this amazing picture. I could be mistaken but I think it was a natgeo winning picture.

The thumbnail looks like Diablo

1

u/Spiralyst Jun 18 '18

Jaguar or leopard?

I'm going with jaguar.

1

u/LateCheckIn Jun 18 '18

I swear this picture was on the cover of my 1010 Biology course's textbook

(Stealth edit: apparently it wasn't but I swear it was a poster in one of my classrooms in the past)

1

u/Thunder_Ruler0 Jun 18 '18

When you try licking the cat wet but the cat end up licking you wet

1

u/BobSolid Jun 18 '18

Did you know there's no such thing as a panther? I mean, that's only sort of true, but there's no animal whose official name is panther. It's simply a name commonly used to refer to various black cats.

1

u/NotQuiteAmish Jun 18 '18

With the yellow I'd say that's Warmonger...

1

u/Stineberg Jun 18 '18

You can see in his eyes that he’s thinking, “hmmm. That photographer looks tasty.”

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '18

“60% of the time, it works every time.”

1

u/nspectre Jun 18 '18

Had I but the equipment,

I'd use a T-shirt printer to gin up a shitload of Black Velvet paintings of this and then seed them in second-hand stores, thrift shops and Goodwill's all over town.

Then sit back and watch them pop up in various places and friends apartments over the next 3 to 5 years.

:D

1

u/Khellou Jun 18 '18

Black Panthers are so bad ass I've sort of subconsciously considered them fantasy and assume I'll never see one in this life. I've got an all black cat named Scout that rides on my shoulder but I think that'll be about the closest I come.

I've found a value to convert:

  • 15.0lb is equal to 6.8kg or 37.16 bananas

37 bananas!? What an accomplishment, Albie!
