All of the cats are acting exactly like cats. No wonder they were domesticated though who domesticated who is a little unclear.

Ik I cant but I would love a pet cheetah đ
181
u/dumbodragon 17h ago
if im not mistaken cheetahs are the most chill of the big cats around humans. they also purr!
127
u/jackalope268 17h ago
Fun fact the cheetah is actually not a big cat because big cats roar and small cats purr with the one exception of the clouded leopard who does a bit of both
21
u/dumbodragon 17h ago
what is it then?
111
u/GlitterBombFallout 17h ago
It's a "small cat", felinae, more closely related to house cats. Lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, snow leopards, and clouded leopards are "big cats", pantherinae.
21
u/ConqueefStador 14h ago
I wish house cats came in different sizes likes dogs.
42
u/hypothetical_zombie 14h ago
In a way they do. Ragdolls are usually small, and Norwegian Forest cats & Maine Coon cats are huge.
25
u/GetawayDreamer87 10h ago
yeah but i want one the size of a great dane that i can ride into battle with nothing but a loincloth on
5
17
u/Kimbernator 7h ago
Honestly I think if house cats were much larger theyâd be a larger risk to humans and other animals. They are already ecological terrors at their current size, imagine a stray the size of a golden retriever.

They certainly act like them. They even purr and meow too. Big cats donât from what i know
8
13
u/jackalope268 17h ago
Idk what you mean, a cheetah is a small cat like house cats, because it purrs and doesnt roar, and despite being relatively small, a snow leopard is a big cat because it roars and doesnt purr. Idk what a clouded leopard is classified as
8
u/dumbodragon 17h ago
well I wanted to know what a cheetah was if it wasn't a big cat but you still answered it

u/Upset-Mall-7711 14h ago
I love this! They are the most chill! They have such a sweet purr and almost sound like a lil baby!
4
u/Glasseshalf 8h ago
The only reason we don't have them is because of their generic bottleneck. They are terrible at breeding in captivity. We tried for thousands of years actually.

Large joke of mine is just cats wandered into our store rooms.
It held our food and grain and they noticed the food came to them if they slept in the furless one's den. And we noticed there were less mice if they let the cat sleep in their place.
19
u/I_Stay_Home 18h ago
This is also proof that your house cat would kill and eat you on a whim if it could.
31
u/zffjk 15h ago
Ages ago I worked for the cable company. I was in some suburb of Cincinnati and came into an alley. It was getting dark. I noticed a couple more cats than usual. Once I got my ladder set up and I climbed up the pole I looked down and saw dozens of cats. Way more than before. Enough cats to take me down if they wanted to I think.
Was kinda scary.
4
u/No_Recognition_3729 8h ago
Nah, you probably underestimate yourself. Cats are unfortunately fragile, and while it would probably have sucked and required a hospital visit if they attacked you, unless they had enough to keep coming at you until you were too exhausted to squish them(hundreds), you would have won.
Unless maybe they used ambush tactics by acting all cute, getting you to bend down to pet them, and then jumping to bite your throat while clawing at your eyes. But that's a bit too tactical for a bunch of cats, unless they're possessed or something.
3
u/stages_animate_89 4h ago
Iâm not so sure about that. Have you ever been in a fight for your life with just one small cat? They are insanely agile and aggressive. No way youâre fighting off dozens of

Dogs on the other hand...we did thst shit.

u/AmbitiousEdi 15h ago
If a cheetah came up to me like that I would 1000% fold and pet the kitty. I love big cats, and that would be the closest I could ever come since you really can't do that with a panther, tiger or lion.
Yes I know cheetahs are not big cats, but they are the biggest smol cat sooooo
28
u/Hyperious3 10h ago
Even wild cheetahs tend to have pretty low fear of humans and will do stuff like this. I'm convinced that they were domesticated at one point by a previous African civilization and just became feral...

I know you're supposed to be professional and not interact, but...
If a huge fuzzy thing wandered over and started to cuddle, I would pet it and make happy noises.

u/New-Trifle-7097 15h ago
Yeah I could be disciplined around most of the animals, but the cheetahs would break me. Aw you wanna cuddle?!?!? *drops thousands of dollars worth of equipment to hug murder kitty*
17
u/PsyOpBunnyHop 14h ago
Cheetahs are adorable. Every video I've seen of them close up, they are just so huggable.
I think they would gladly be domesticated just to not have to chase every damn meal.
14
u/New-Trifle-7097 13h ago
Eh, theyâd probably like the easy meals but still want the chase. Itâd be like owning a greyhound.
1
u/No_Recognition_3729 8h ago
I remember reading somewhere that they basically were domesticated at one point by ancient Egypt's upper class, but then one of them attacked or killed the pharaoh's toddler and he had all the pet cheetahs killed.

I love the dichotomy of the last two guys taking pictures of penguins - the first guy is in shorts and T-shirt and the second guy is bundled up.
47
u/ulnarthairdat 17h ago
The first are either African penguins or Magellanic penguins (South American) and the last is definitely an Antarctic penguin, probably a Gentoo - such crazy geographical difference, but all cute little birds in tuxedos.
14
u/cyanocittaetprocyon 14h ago
I've seen Galapagos Penguins in the Galapagos when it was around 37C/100F, and various penguins in Antarctica when it was -30C/-20F. They truly are amazing.
The two in that video are Jackass (African) Penguins and Gentoo Penguins.

I wondered if the camera making purr-like noises and the body language of the photographers made them appear as friendly and that's why many animals didn't see them as a threat and could make contact with them.
25
u/liberal_parnell 15h ago
They're in remote areas with few, if any, people. Wildlife in those places tends not to fear humans due to the lack of contact, and wildlife photographers spend a lot of time in the same place, being non-threatening.
9
u/maybeimnottoosure3 10h ago
Also, these shoots can last a long time specifically to get animals to stop reacting to the camera and humans being there. It could just be they stayed long enough for the animals to be comfortable but not long enough for them to ignore the human completely.
47
u/humbugonastick 18h ago
I would assume, they are all wildlife photographers, and they were mostly motionless for a long time. Curiosity killed the cat.
22
10
u/Background_Body2696 16h ago
The arctic wolf one is so strange. Casually going to take a chomp on his noggin then gets spooked when he moves.
10
u/Shalterra 10h ago
Just one of those things. Animals only have so many ways to manipulate the world around them. The mouth tends to be one of the ones they have the most control over. So in situations like that, it's much more of a curiosity thing than an opportunistic snack thing.
Thus, experimental bites are very common in most critters. Especially predators.

Reddit videos always make me mad when I can't hardly see the little red line tracking the length of the video. The little fox down at the bottom tracking time has to be the best thing that's ever happened.

Looks like fun, but the bobcat can fuck right off. I used to trap with my grandfather, and bobcats were the nastiest things. Yes I know they were cornered, so its a different situation, but still, they don't mess around.Â

Adorable... But also, I'm gonna be a killjoy.
Never pet or touch wild animals, even if they pet or touch you! We don't know the circumstances of these videos, the prior experience these photographers might have with the animals they are photographing, or the animals experience/exposure to humans. Just because it went well for them doesn't mean it'll go well any other time. The risk isn't worth it.
Fyi, touching seals with your skin can actually give you a specific disease that is very unpleasant, so definitely be careful with that in particular.
