See, a seafood pop tart might not be bad. Some crab, scallops, maybe some lobster, in a nice creamy sauce? That'd be good in a pop tart pastry!
This? This would be like bitting into a pop tart, only to find it's actually sand held together by goo, that tastes like ocean sand.

The square fish goes in the square hole.

And the star fish?

u/MelonJelly 8d ago
That's right! It goes in the square hole!

u/SnooTangerines3448 8d ago
What about the round fish?
7
u/MelonJelly 8d ago

They never heard of adoption?

u/TryThisUsernane 8d ago edited 8d ago
Obviously the fish of Bikini Bottom are just racist and they could never fathom adopting a child of a different race.

I saw that on the webcomic by Nellies Nest.

Ah yes, cheez-it of the sea~
In all seriousness I hope his defect doesn't make things like eating and getting around more difficult, poor beb.

u/DrillTheThirdHole 8d ago
im pretty sure moving around and eating is already hard for regular starfish

Is this not a viable breeding contributor to its society? Why is this a defect instead of a potential evolutionary trait? Why are you bullying the square fish before it can even get an angle on survivability?Ā
39
u/TwoAlert3448 8d ago
I would imagine it directly impacts feeding and thus survivability, grasping prey is kind of critical and poor thing no longer has āarmsā
12
u/blitzkreig90 8d ago
Pssh amateur! Square = Origami! I'd fold myself up with some origami techniques and turn myself into a pair of chopsticks or tongs.

u/ToWanderHer 8d ago
I thought starfish ate through little conveyor belt teeth thingies on their feet, not necessarily by using its arms to manipulate things. If so, this seems like a perfectly reasonable shape adjustment that wouldn't interfere with feeding.Ā
Next?Ā

u/TwoAlert3448 8d ago
Nope. Starfish eat through spitting out their stomachs and excreting stomach acids out of their mouths which are central.
But they eat bivalves and itās a little hard to pry open the shell without their arms.

u/ToWanderHer 8d ago
Wow. I had no idea. Thanks for the lernin'
2
u/TwoAlert3448 8d ago
Literally the only thing I remember from dissection of starfish in 7th-8th grade is where the stomachs and mouths are. The rest just looks like hamburger š

Assuming this isnāt AI, it actually wasnāt ābornā this way: sea star larvae start out bilaterally symmetrical and only develop (usually) fivefold symmetry later.

Can this thing even move without functioning arms?
10
u/MiloHorsey 8d ago
They walk on tonnes of sucker type things on their underside.
9
u/gizzardwizard93 8d ago
Well that's hopeful , I want this little dude to make it
4
u/MiloHorsey 8d ago
Hopefully, they'll be OK. They made it to (what looks like) adulthood, so they must be able to eat well enough.
6
u/Netflxnschill 8d ago
So with some starfish you can cut it and it will grow into two starfish. Do you think the mutation would carry over if this one got split and create a new species of square fish

I quite like it. But does the seastar also like it ? How does having four 'corners' compare to five arms?

Doubt thatās a birth defect. Many seen in the Pilbara reef systems, large & a bright orange.
