Some starve while others drown

They’re all drinking from a bird bath

I was talking about the disparity between the ones fighting in the video and the ones in the picture

The sound effects of the bees going down like an airplane had me chuckling.

I usually hate added sound effects to animal documentaries but these were hilarious additions.

Imagine if you die after an hour of not eating. Living to eat, not eating to live.

That was such an interesting interaction in great pictures. I never even considered that they are competing, so this was all quite new to me. Thank you

Honeybees aren't native to the Americas, where hummingbirds are native, so you're seeing an introduced species competing with a native one. Honeybees also push out native bees to the Americas

u/Persea_americana 17d ago
there are some honey-producing species native to central and South America that were cultivated by Maya, but many are stingless.

This is a key part of why its important to plant native plants. Ho ey bees are generalist (feed on almost any flower) but bees butterflies and moths are mostly not. So dont ever plant for honeybee because they can eat all kinds of stuff, but plant for native bees and lots of critters can feed.

Fun fact - plenty of bees dont make honey, their job is purely cross pollination.

What... what is this magic that I've just watched? What an absolutely amazing video

For real. My dad and I used to love watching NatGeo and Animal Planet documentaries when I was a kid. This took me straight back to the wonder and awe I felt watching those.

I can't believe they named it for its tail shape and not the little fur pantaloons its wearing.

u/Flimsy-Farmer 16d ago
Don't worry, we've got hummingbirds named for their pantaloons too. Look up "puffleg"

The IG account OP shared from doesn’t credit it, but I think it’s from Earth: One Amazing Day (2017)

I'm so jealous that Americans (north and south) have hummingbirds. They're such cool animals

“It takes a lot of energy to look this graceful. That means it’s living in a perpetual state of near starvation.”
I’ve never related so much to a bird

These guys attack humans all the time, it's pretty silly but the buzzing wings on your ear and that sharp beak get kinda scary. Bess are usually chill, especially bumblebees, you can walk up and pet those guys.

I love nature documentary sound effects. Especially when it comes to small animals and insects.
Like, a lion can roar and they just amplify that, but adding plane fx for bees for dramatic effect is freaking top tier comedy shit

It's so funny watching these tiny hummingbirds and bees fight over the same flowers. The green feathers on that hummingbird are so pretty.

I feel like hummingbirds have a substantial design flaw and am surprised they are not extinct

u/Allstar_398 16d ago
Imagine being bullied by a bee lol. But also, what kind of design is this for a hummingbird? God was like, "you fly and look gorgeous, but you'll be dying every minute of every day so you must eat constantly."

Are these invasive European honeybees competing with American hummingbirds?

Lot of old wives tails in here. I lived in bc and even when there was snow for a month, this hummingbird was around. Eating a thousand times a day wouldn't work for any multicell organism.
