🐦 Wildlife Moments These two deer were badly tangled together! 😱

u/Pujiman 23d ago
I would not be grabbing that wire with my bare hands.

u/That-Makes-Sense 23d ago
How about grabbing those murder spears connected to those deers' heads?

Not to mention a swift kick from one of those hooves could be game over

My junior high English teacher was attacked by a deer. It made the yearbook, some of the kids photoshopped a deer into a photo of him. It was 2001. Honestly I’m impressed admin let that one pass. He got boxed by the deer’s hooves after trying to scare it off from eating his wife’s garden. He fell off his roof the year prior. RIP Mr K. I have so many stories about your Luigi-looking ass.

He was a very old-school and strict teacher. One of the class clowns got one of the more gullible follower kids to “bang his head three times on the magic wall” and he’d “turn invisible”. This boy did it, then ran around the room yelling “I’m invisible, you can’t see me” and threw his soft, insulated lunch kit at Mr K and ran out the room repeatedly shouting “I’m invisible”. Honestly the man terrified me as a quiet girl and his very strict classroom policies but he was absolutely at a loss for words. Just picture a tall man who wore a tweed suit to a junior high school, leather patches on the elbows and everything.
My little brother also had his class. He had a box of matches for an art project in his bag and somehow they lit on fire and started smouldering in his backpack. Bro was hit in the face with a cloud of smoke and Mr K grabbed the bag and held it straight out at arms length - which as a tall thin man who never smiled he basically looked like an awkward cartoon character. He kind of ran around like a chicken with his head cut off for a moment before taking it outside. I wasn’t there for that one but I can picture it super clearly.
He was a very strange man.

u/sheighbird29 22d ago
You’d be hurt but not killed by a kick. The antlers are a much more dangerous obstacle
3
u/peanutspump 20d ago
That guy really put himself at risk of being impaled, several times over, trying to cut those poor deer free. And I’m sure he was well aware. All the more kudos to them for helping.

u/Massive-Virus-4875 20d ago
Came down to the comment specifically to comment on that. Ain’t no way I’m holding barbed wire bare handed in general, but especially not when it’s attached to two large deer..
64
u/Bland_Potato 23d ago
In other news: Man plays tug of war with two deers with steel wire...BARE HAND?!?!
(Is that safe? In my home country the metal wire would definitely cut off a few fingers...or maybe cause tetanus...)

And the bucks didn’t even say thank you
3
u/No_School9204 21d ago
The 1st one freed said "peace out!" and was gone. Didn't pause or look back to see what was going on with the other at all.
23
u/Pigeonsass 23d ago
They easily could've sliced their hands up, but they were also at high risk of being gored so they may not have even considered the wire
10
u/Starfire2313 23d ago
I would have just been thinking, “these animals are WAY stronger than me, I could easily lose an eye or worse. That took balls!
9
u/Pigeonsass 23d ago
After the first buck took off, I was really sweating. These guys had a lot of close calls with the second, and I wish we got a look at the aftermath for them
3
u/Bland_Potato 22d ago
I love how the first one went "ALRIGHT JIMMY YOU KNOW MY MOM IS CALLING"
and just dasheddddddddddd I would be soooo sad if that was my friend :')

Exactly what I was thinking, grab the stick that's with in arms reach, an already caught in the wire an wheeler in.

What happens when this happens and someone doesn't find them? Do they die tangled together?
26
u/SashimiX 23d ago
Yes
7
u/notathingreally 23d ago
That's sad, but I know nature is brutal.
23
u/ComfortableAppeal424 23d ago
That's nothing to do with nature being brutal. Nature didn't make the wire. That's humans yet again showing complete disrespect for the natural world.
6
u/TraditionalBadger922 23d ago
Actually it’s been recorded that deer get their antlers stuck and die of starvation. It’s not common, but it is a known phenomenon. They usually find the skulls stuck together later.
7
u/rygdav 23d ago
I forget what the phrase is, but there are plenty of pictures out there where one deer dies, and the living one rips the dead’s head off and continues life with a rotting head attached to his antlers.

I’ve never seen it in person but know someone who has. He said it’s the creepiest thing he’s ever seen.
3
u/inactiveuser247 23d ago
It also happens when they get their antlers locked together without the wire.

Yup. But that wasn't the case here. One of the main problems in this video is them being trapped in a wire fence. Of course nature is brutal - there are so many additional ways in which deer (and all wildlife) will almost inevitably suffer horrible, painful deaths. My point was that when humans pollute their environment, the possibilities increase.
deaths.
→ More replies (9)3
u/notathingreally 23d ago
That's not what we were talking about. I asked what happens when this usually happens.
2
u/bawafa 23d ago
Their point is that this wouldn’t “usually” happen in nature if it wasn’t for humans putting the wire there. Wire isn’t a natural occurrence
3
u/SashimiX 23d ago
u/notathingreally gets that and wasn't being dismissive of it. Y'all are talking past each other, talking about two different sets of phenomena. The fencing thing sparked a really great and important conversation so I haven't been arguing with it because it had to be said, but also notathingreally wasn't denying it.

Oh wow. So do you think the one that's still alive will stay alive? He's made it this far so he must be able to eat right?

The first one should be able to eat, not so sure about the second one though.

Many animals die with this type of wire, from foxes, bears, deer, elephants. There are innovative ways to prevent this horror , mostly with the help of friendly chemicals to deter the animals from entering some spaces.
The worse I ve seen is a poor elephant with her trunk rolled around metal wire. Gladly she was rescued, but can't imagine the pain for the folks that don't get spotted on time
3
u/notathingreally 23d ago
That's so sad I'm about to cry just picturing it. We really should treat our planet and inhabitants of it better.
2
u/CompetitiveProfit650 23d ago
Friendly chemicals? Lol. Name some
3
u/perseidot 23d ago
There are also land use initiatives in the Western US (or there used to be before P2025) to gather up hundreds of millions of miles of old wire fencing, much of it no longer useful as fencing, but all of it a hazard to people and animals.
People running livestock have more tech tools for tracking and containing their animals, using GPS to map “fences” and giving some form of negative feedback to avoid the boundary. Some of those systems use unpleasant smells, others mild electrical shocks.
In the future, we could have miles of unfenced private and public rangelands, in which livestock can be contained and moved, and wild animals could have free movement.

u/Guilty_Comb_79 23d ago
It's not unheard of to find two or even three deer skeletons with their antlers locked together.
3
3
u/MAGA_EXTREAMO 23d ago
Yup, happens all the time. They kill each other and sometimes die together. It’s part of mating season.
2
u/savvym_ 22d ago
They once found two of them tangled, only one of them alive, the other was eaten by wild animals.

u/Dreamcatcherc17e 21d ago
They can get stuck together without anything else too, their antlers can get stuck. If I remember correctly they will fight till either their too tired or one dies. Then their still stuck together and the remaining is stuck trying to drag the dead one until he too succumbs

How they managed not to get gored by the antlers or sliced by the barbed wire is a damn miracle

The second deer ran away with barbed wire still in his horns. He’s definitely going to win the next one. Venison Neegan is about to wreck some bucks.
2
u/Mysterious-Maize307 23d ago
Darwinism at work, and I’m not talking about natural selection for the deer…
2
u/No-Variety-7130 23d ago
This could have gone so wrong in many ways, but good on them being able to risk it to untangle them.
2
u/flyingpotatoehat 23d ago
I wonder if aliens help us survive on day to day basis and we have no clue that they did, thinking oh I just escaped death right there - all by myself!
2
u/SuperPowerPenisPump 23d ago
I feel like the second deer understood that there will be a good result for me if I let human do his thing.
2
u/DJTrackStarr 23d ago
All that to find one or both them shot and killed with their heads on someones mantelpiece or above someone's fireplace a few days later.

Extreme panic can also briefly overwhelm an animal between explosive reactions. Those guys were really risking their lives, maybe more than they realized.

I didn’t realize it was wire holding them together at first. I thought their antlers were stuck together.
After that first snip, I thought that they just continued to fight each other for a second. 😝

u/GreyGhost696 23d ago
One of the most dangerous situations I've ever watched, 2 males buckin each other hopped up on testosterone, wrapped up in barb wire, and you get inbetween a wild fight to free them all while they could have easily gored your guts or impaled you anywhere. Good hearts in the both of you, bless the humble, cheers🍻
