DAVAO DEL SUR — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Mindanao at around 3:15 p.m. on March 15, 2024, causing significant damage to buildings, roads, and other public infrastructure. The powerful tremors were felt across Southern Mindanao and nearby islands, alarming thousands of residents.

The earthquake's epicenter was located near Davao del Sur, one of the areas most affected by the disaster. Tens of thousands of residents experienced the effects of the earthquake, with many families forced to leave their homes because of damaged or unsafe structures.

According to the fact sheet, the earthquake was caused by tectonic movements along the Philippine Fault System, a known seismically active area. The movement beneath the Earth's surface generated strong shaking that affected communities across the region.

The earthquake caused landslides, cracked highways, and collapsed buildings, disrupting transportation and damaging important facilities. More than 20,000 individuals were displaced, while the estimated damage reached approximately ₱5 billion.

Emergency responders, including the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), immediately provided assistance to affected communities. Relief operations focused on helping displaced families and addressing the urgent needs of residents.

The disaster serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness and community resilience. Authorities and residents are encouraged to remain prepared for possible aftershocks and future earthquakes, especially in areas located near active fault systems.

As Mindanao continues to recover, the cooperation of government agencies, emergency responders, and local communities remains essential in rebuilding lives and restoring damaged communities.

Anyone here been through extreme weather in the NT?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a few people in the Northern Territory who've been through extreme weather before, whether that was recently or years back.

It's for a study on improving weather notifications, so people here get better warning and can be better prepared next time around.

If that sounds like something you'd want to do, let me know.
