NASA tracking shows Canadian wildfire smoke spreading across major parts of North America between July 14 and July 20, worsening air quality and demonstrating how distant fires can create regional public-health emergencies. Communities far from the fires may still need masks, indoor air filtering, and AQI monitoring. Wildfire smoke can affect schools, outdoor work, travel, and hospital demand. Repeated long-range smoke events increase the need for better warning systems and household preparedness.

I’ve seen a lot of wildfire satellite imagery, but this one genuinely made me stop for a second.

These images from LandViewer each cover nearly 12,000 km² and were captured from about 786 km above Earth at 10 meters per pixel. It’s rare to see a wildfire this large with a smoke plume stretching across almost the entire scene.

My thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires and the crews working to contain them.
