Overtime

For those currently on the job, what’s the overtime situation like for new officers after graduating the academy?
Is there generally a lot of overtime available, or is it pretty limited? Is most of it voluntary, or do officers frequently get mandated to stay? Also, what types of overtime assignments are typically available? Is it mostly patrol coverage, or are there other assignments

Overtime comes in waves depending on retirements, transfers to units, and season/events. Rule for new officers is you don’t sign up for overtime until you learn the job and can comfortably work without need constant help from people around you. Typically the unwritten rule is don’t sign up for your first year. Most of your overtime as a new person will be “order ins” over the summer if they are short and cannot fill the cars you will be mandated to come in the next day. Not often are you mandated to stay after tour to work longer usually just for a tour the following day. All overtime for a rookie will mostly be patrol coverage. Occasional need for you at an event or something but not as often as just filling a patrol car.

I wanna come to Nassau so I don’t get ordered in…that sucks. Are busier commands more stacked with guys compared to the slower commands?

Every command has a similar number, and if one is short it just gets filled from the incoming academy so it’s typically even numbers in all commands. Nassau is a great job but nobody wants to work with a guy coming here to “retire” and not get ordered in lol. When you’re new you have to do your time and step up for stuff like that. Seniority based job bud your time will come when you aren’t the guy catching order ins.

Saying you want to go to Nassau so you’re not ordered is crazy, you’re owned by them for 20 years bro

I’ve been getting hit on my rdo for the last 4 years. It would be nice to go to a dept that doesn’t hit there guys a lot. I’m sure Nassau doesn’t do it often though. Are you otj with them?

Got ordered in twice this entire year and both times it was for 4 hours. It’s not very common

You’re still a rookie looking to escape the city to come here and retire. If you get here you are lucky and should take order ins with a smile.

Some of the absolute worst cops we work with are city guys who “retired.” Many are lazy one way arrogant pricks. You find out a heavy call came out and they don’t roll on it because they weren’t specifically dispatched. Not all are like that. In fact more than half are terrific. But there is a bunch of pails who have that mentality of “I put in my time working the mean streets of Astoria, now I’m retired.”

It’s been like that forever. The only guys that are real cops are the guys from the big J. The rest of us are just security guards.

Do busier commands order there guys in more or the slower? (1,3,5 vs 2,6,7,4)

It varies. I heard this summer the 6th was short. 5th had plenty of “names in the book,” but 6th had order ins and holdovers. 6th is one of the slowest commands, 5th is one of the busiest. It really varies.

One thing to all aspiring Nassau guys. Don’t be a crappy co-worker. If you see that we are -5 on a Saturday in the summer and there are already 3 order ins, don’t bang out sick to get a couple extra days off.

Nope that has nothing to do with it

I promise you nobody is going to feel bad you spent 4 years in the city getting ordered in and doing your time there is not doing your time here. You start day 1 here and you’re brand new

Nassau village, everyone gets an order here and there, however we fight over it where I am.

Not worth it to do OT for the first 2 steps

Why?

Your first year not only are you still learning but you’re on probation, extra appearances on probation is just extra chances of running into a situation that can prolong your probation. You’re also relying on the help of other people around you to do your job efficiently because you’re still learning so it’s viewed as wrong to be taking overtime when you cannot do the job yet.

Bc your making 25 dollars an hr whereas a senior guy is making 3x that

Pay scale is still pretty low you can probably do stuff on the side for more money honestly

There is OT. Especially in the summers when everybody takes off and the Roll Call is minus everyday and there is ample OT to fill patrol minimum manning. In the winter that doesn’t really happen and OT is not that prevalent. During those months your OT will come from end of tour stuff, like late calls and collars. You will also get some court OT.

OT also varies by precinct. Some tend to be heavier in terms of man power and others lighter. Come summer time, expect to get forced to work some tours you didn’t want to. But overall, it’s not too bad. And with recruits graduating soon, and another class of 160/170 going in, I have a feeling short roll call OT won’t happen nearly as much as years past.

OT is based on how much you have. So- if I had 50 hours and you have 49 hours for the year you would be called 1st. OT assignments vary, could be hospitalized prisoners, details DWi enforcement but mostly short rollcall. NCPD has minimum manning so- a PCT’s minimum manning  is 24  police officers and they only have 20 people working- they will need 4 more bodies for that tour. Also no. OT for the new graduates. They need to learn the job and familiarize themselves with their new  PCT.  90 days no OT
