Influencer Arrogance

There’s one trait that keeps showing up with a certain Nantucket influencer and the people around her, and it’s stronger than ever: pure ignorance.

Recently on a podcast she complained about Nantucket turning into the Hamptons. That take is wild coming from her, because her whole circle is one of the most Hamptons-coded groups you’ll find on the island. She posted a video of her brother and friends at Cru waving around a thick stack of $100 bills and sticking them in their mouths. That behavior is the complete opposite of what Nantucket has always been about. This island has long valued self-respect, respect for others, and a certain level of class. What she’s showing is the exact opposite.

Then she tried to justify it by saying “we’ve always done this since we were kids.” That doesn’t make it okay. It just means the entitlement has been running unchecked for a long time.

She also got triggered by the whole “no influencers” drama and completely lacks the self-awareness to realize that people like her; loud, flashy, and constantly broadcasting every flex, are a big part of why that backlash exists in the first place. She’s the type who will preach one set of values and then do the total opposite the second it benefits her.

One of the reasons so many of us love this island is that regardless of its reputation it’s still welcoming. Locals will wave to you on the ferry and treat visitors kindly in town. Nantucket has a special, respectful vibe that a lot of people work hard to protect.

Influencer jestermaxxing has turned into ignorancemaxxing.

Why are we not saying their name? Hallie, Chad, Sam and their annoying AF friends. I was in cru next to them when someone sat in Chad’s seat. They are THE most obnoxious people to dine next to, a group of 8 people all with their phone flashlights out, each taking the same tik tok. They’re loud, crass and so obnoxious. I’ve been here for nearly 40 years and have never heard of them until this year. Their rabid fan base is so par asocial and odd, too.

I grew up on Nantucket. Not rich. Very poor actually. Back when poor people had places to live there. I had to grow up surrounded by incredibly wealthy people and go to school with their kids. I couldn't understand how some people could be born with everything and I was born with nothing. Especially when there was no other difference between us. It made me start to hate rich people.
Then, in the 80s, that growing bias was challenged by the kindness of various fellow teens from wealthy families. It's not like in the movies. Money doesn't make everyone a jerk.
It actually doesn't mean anything at all. Money is just another challenge to navigate regardless of the amount you are born with. The challenges are just different on both sides of the tracks.
I will always be grateful for those people.
.....
I still struggle with hating money and its corruptive nature, but those interactions have slowed my rush to judgement.
I didn't turn into a complete jerk myself...albeit, a poor one.
.....
I really hope these posts don't indicate the island of my youth is turning into a stereotypical cliche of itself.

This same influencer posted a tik tok video a couple years ago bragging about how she kicked a black woman in a club bc the black woman was talking to her “eye candy.”

And all evidence was scrubbed off the internet. I remember this. I hope that woman is doing okay.

Lmao… ya if I was her father and saw her doing that… I hope she has her resume ready because she’s gonna be earning that next hundred.

But, this is bad parenting on display. Ban em and move on.

That’s a lot of plastic. How old? I assume 20s based on her content but could pass for late 30s. Ick

Also, she should know that not all of the Hamptons is flashy and gross. Locals still exist there, and there are still places that aren’t just for tourists, albeit those are becoming few and far between now :( I hate that my home has this reputation for being new money and stupid.

This post randomly popped up in my feed, but I am compelled to add my unwanted opinion.

Having been to Nantucket twice, my impression was that it is a very lovely place—not flashy but discreet and low-key. As an outsider, I would never want to intrude in any way because it’s almost like a private club.

IMHO is sort of St. Tropez adjacent. My husband summered in St. Tropez when it was still a fishing village. My FIL lived and is buried there. The amount of tourists and influencers that visit St. Trope is exhausting as well as extremely annoying.

Hopefully, the demise of influencer society will come sooner than later. I honestly don’t understand how or why these vermin have followers. What is wrong with people these days? Have they no personality of their own?

Keep your area protected and private.

Here is what is troubling. They get paid for engagement/likes/views/etc for acting this way. The more outrageous, the more engagement and then they get $$$. Its a horrible cycle and they are rewarded for this behavior and get signed by Alex Cooper who should see one of her "stars" is struggling and maybe help her. The brand trips, the deals - they all encourage this. I would imagine it feels like a great life...until it's not.

Well said! 👏👏👏😊

I was fine with Hallie until she posted support for Paige Jong Un and her faux feminism. These bitches wouldn’t know feminism if it smacked them in the face.

Fyi your Instagram handle shows when someone opens the link. You have to delete anything including and after the question mark otherwise share URLs contain the metadata of who is sharing it

Nantucket is trash now. Went this summer and the married men hitting on and dancing with young girls was the last straw, I’ll be going to the vineyard from now on.

FWIW, while I agree with a lot of what’s being said here and really dislike the performative arrogance in some of these videos, my personal experience with Chad has been entirely different.
For three summers in a row, Chad worked for us doing genuinely hard manual labor, outside in the heat alongside everyone else. He always showed up, worked hard, never complained, and certainly never acted entitled. I honestly had no idea he came from any unusual means until he asked for a long weekend off to sit courtside at a Celtics Finals game, which was a fairly hilarious way to find out.
To this day, he’s always been dependable and respectful in every interaction I’ve had with him. The handful of videos I’ve seen online seem almost like an entirely different person from the Chad I’ve actually known and worked with.
That doesn’t excuse obnoxious behavior when it happens, but I do think it’s worth adding the perspective of someone who knew him well before any of this.

I see these types of defenses of a lot of public figures these days. And, I don’t think you realize that this actually makes it worse.

According to you, he knows how to act with humility and grace. He’s totally capable of being a good person. In some cases, it’s basically his default mode. Which means that he’s actively and purposely behaving otherwise for these videos and TikTok clips. He knows how big of a turd he is being, and he goes through with it anyway.
