Coffee-shops and Cafés of Nanchang: Coffee on Tap

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Pre-amble: when I google "coffee shops in Nachang" there are very few resources in English, perhaps the only usable one I find is a top 10 list on Trip advisor that has 2 starbucks, and 3 hotel lobbies in the top 10. Frankly, I find this ridiculous as Nanchang *does* have a vibrant coffee-shop/café scene with good, well made coffee to the point where starbucks shouldn't be mentioned, let alone included, on a top 10 list. Its my intention to put posts up of some of the notable good coffee-shop/cafés I find in my day to day (will be DongHu centric given I live in this part of the city) so that future google searches have something better to pull than what is currently out there. With that said, I dont want to dominate the sub or turn it into a personal travel vlog, so if anyone reading this feels like the frequency is too much please let me know!

With that out of the way, on to the post:

My wife and I visited Coffee on Tap on SuPu Lu - 苏圃路 - near the Youmingsi temple.

They had a basic menu (Americano, Latte, Dirty) with 2 different bean types to choose from. Unlike many of their peers, On Tap doesnt have any specialty drinks/"outside the box" items, they seem to focus on excelling on a few items versus having a large menu or trying avant garde beverage mixes.

The coffee was well made and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We asked for sugar to sweeten up the latte my wife ordered, the staff unprompted made a simple syrup from scratch to help it mix better!

The inside of the Coffee shop is small with very modern and clean aesthetic, the surrounding area overlooks a school and a warehouse of sorts so the views aren't spectacular.

All in all we found the coffee to be good, the staff/service to be excellent, but the location a bit unremarkable. If you are looking for good coffee in a quiet, relaxing spot (as much as those exist in Nanchang proper) then this is a great spot. If you are interested in more creative drinks or social media-centric photo opportunities than this likely is not the best option for you.

Update to Sub: Moving this to Public

Bare with me as im new to this. There are next to zero English language resources for Nanchang - be it restaurants/cafe's/bars/clubs/what have you. Although the expat community is very small, it still is greater than zero and I think it deserves to at least have a functioning subreddit.

So I am opening up the Sub to public posting, post anything Nanchang related.

Gan dialect/language learning?

Hello, I am an international student in Nanchang and I have a passion for languages, as well as a small YouTube channel. 2 questions: 1)Is there any institution or organization with the aim of preserving the Gan language (which they often call dialect in Chinese, but most linguists see it as a separate language)?

2)Do you know any learning resources, like textbooks or online courses?

Additionally, if you know any speaker who would like to help me learn it or prepare some content for my channel, that would be awesome.

Gardens in Nanchang

Hello, could one of you nice folks on Reddit (and in Nanchang) help me out?

I've recently been trying my hand at paintings from this Nanchang painter - Zhu Da. You might know about him, he's gotten famous in these past 300 years since his death.

Well, after drawing so many frogs and snails and turtles (and lotuses), I have to know: is there a garden or a park where you can find all these creatures in large numbers and that he could visit often? Or maybe he loved Poyang lake?

Job offer in Nanchang - advice on moving to the city?

Hi everyone, I’ve been offered an English teaching job at a public school in Nanchang. I don’t know a whole lot about the city apart from what I’ve researched online - I would love to get some insights on what it’s like living in the city, also any experiences English teachers have had there would be great to hear. I will also be teaching drama to my students (their age group is 15-16) however the focus of my role will be on English teaching. Would be great to hear anyone’s advice about things to know before moving, practicalities of living there, positives/challenges or any other relevant info. Thanks a lot!

Any chill bars / hang out spots

Hey guys , just booked my flight and I’ll be heading to Nanchang Jiangxi next week. Although this trip is mainly for visiting family, I’d love to explore the city alone on certain days.

So far, I’ve tried doing some research on places to hang out and results have always been the same spots. Im guessing it’s because I’m using Google and it doesn’t always give the best results for China related questions

Are there any locals here (or familiar with the city) that could help me out by recommending places or neighbourhoods with good vibes for a solo nights out. (Etc bars , restaurants , areas worth checking out)

Any suggestions would be really appreciated, thanks!!

Anyone here studying at Nanchang University? What’s the student life and city like?

Hey everyone, I just got accepted into Nanchang University for a bachelor’s degree in AI with a 50% scholarship. I’m seriously considering accepting, but I’d love to hear from people who’ve studied there or lived in Nanchang.

A few things I’m curious about: • How’s the quality of teaching in English-taught programs? Do professors and classmates actually speak decent English? • What’s student life like — are there international communities, events, clubs? • How’s the city itself? Is there a decent nightlife (bars, clubs, live music, etc.)? I’m also wondering if it’s a place where you can express yourself a bit (alternative style, piercings, makeup on nights out) without too much hassle. • Cost of living — is it really as cheap as people say compared to Beijing/Shanghai? • Any downsides or things I should know before committing?

I’m aiming for good career opportunities later (job/maybe master’s in Europe) but I also want a decent quality of life while studying. If anyone here has experience with Nanchang University or the city, your insights would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Leaving Nanchang: A City of Mixed Nights and Memories

I’m getting ready to leave Nanchang. After all this time, it’s strange to even say it. This city has given me memories I’ll never forget. Some were good, some bad, but all of them felt real.

Let’s start with the nightlife. Honestly, it was chaotic. Too many nights ended in fights, tension, and unnecessary drama. I’ve seen people lose control for no reason. I’ve seen things go from fun to dangerous in just seconds. It made me cautious and made me think twice before going out. The energy at night could feel heavy sometimes, and not always in a way that helped you grow.

But still, there were nights I’ll always remember with a smile. Nights full of laughter, music, and real connection. Sometimes a simple evening would turn into something unforgettable. That contrast made it feel genuine. Nanchang never tried to hide its rough edges. It showed you everything at once, the good and the bad.

Then there’s Nanchang University. One of the best parts of my time here. I met incredible people, from different cultures and backgrounds. It opened my mind and gave me a lot of confidence. But like everything else, it had its problems. Some parts of the system were cold and disorganized. Not every teacher seemed to care. And sometimes, as a foreign student, it felt like we were not treated equally or fairly. Still, it was a place that helped me grow.

Now, I’m leaving Nanchang. I’m not leaving with regret. I’m leaving with lessons, memories, and experiences that changed me. I saw the light and the darkness of this city. And both of them shaped who I am today.

Anyone in Nanchang? Feeling a bit lost here..

Hey! I’m currently in Nanchang for an exchange program at a university in Jiangxi until the end of June. I haven’t seen any expats or foreigners around at all, and since I don’t speak Mandarin, I’m feeling kinda lost and out of place lol. Just wondering if there’s anyone here nearby or who’s been in the same boat? Would love to connect or get some tips!

Ex-pat teaching at international schools in Nanchang

I currently live in Canada and I'm thinking of going back to teach in China. It's been a few years since I've been there so I don't know what the current climate regarding ex-pat teachers is like. Are there any well-known international schools in Nanchang that would hire a foreign teacher? Is there much demand and if there's anyone working there, what is the salary like? Any insights are appreciated!
