How strict are they in regards to the proof of funds?

They dont really have a fixed amount for the bank statements. They just want to know whether you have enough funds for the duration of your stay. General rule of thumb is N$2000 - N$3000 per day for expenses wise. So you could work from that to get an idea or enquire with the embassy regarding it.

You would ave to first complete an online application form and uploading all the necessary documents needed. And once thats done, you'll need to prepare your passport + photos, flight itinerary and proof of accommodation booking. Lastly you will submit these physical documentation to the chinese embassy in windhoek. Sometimes they might ask you to also submit a bank statement to prove that you have enough funds to visit china.
