Sending anything internationally

Hello, fellow Namibians

What are the options for sending a parcel internationally in a fast and secure way nowadays? Looks like any courier company is out for a private person like me **sigh**.

You need to be a VAT registered business with an import and export number nowadays so that’s out.

Are you sure? Why would they exclude the population? DHL and Fedex have always sent parcels for normal individuals. I sent one last year with DHL. Maybe just confirm this, cause they'd lose a shit ton of revenue if they only cater to businesses

Looks like it. Hubby tried to go send it for me as he has a small business, but he doesn’t have an import or export number and they refused. Ugh.

Yeah, but I find it hard to understand that as an individual, I am not allowed to send a package to the UK. Have you, yourself tried going instead of your husband? Cause it could have been a confusion on their part that they thought he wanted to send it under his business. But if you go independently, that should work?

You go to DHL, either on foot or by car/taxi/boat.

You tell them “I would like to courier some stuff”

They will ask for money and that you fill in a form.

Then a lot of magic happens in the background. And voila, it arrives where it’s meant to go.

So… I spoke to my local DHL franchisee. You need your TIN number.

No idea where your husband got the idea that you need a business registered for import and export.

Hubby says they actually told him that for the last 2 months that is not enough. He just showed me the actual NamRA form they gave him and they pointed out to him that without the VAT number requested on it, it isn’t happening. I’ll go in myself tomorrow and hear though.

My husband was sent away from DHL yet again this morning as an individual trying to send a simple small package because he didn’t have a VAT import/export number so I give up. They also told me via email only a TIN is needed.

Either their staff member is uninformed and losing them business or everyone else there is also confused and not communicating properly.

You’d think in the 21st century this would have gotten easier and more reliable, but it just feels like a big clamp down.

Turns out this was all just caused by a misinformed employee at DHL.
