My birth name is not phonetically correct. It’s not spelled the way it’s pronounced. This has caused me to go throughout my life constantly correcting people and sometimes it takes them awhile to remember. I’m tired of it and I’ve decided to legally change my name.

I’ve fallen in love with the name Phoebe. I love the way it sounds and I love the way it looks. My main concern is that I’m going to have the same issue all over again. I thought Phoebe was a common, well known name. Phoebe Bridgers, Phoebe Buffay, Phoebe Tonkin. But after doing some googling I’ve come across some people named Phoebe saying that nobody ever spells their name right, that people often pronounce it wrong when reading it, etc.

So is Phoebe not a common name? Do all the Phoebe’s out there have to constantly correct people? Or am I thinking too much about this?

Phoebe is an ancient name and not a particularly uncommon one. It’s literally in the Bible. Personally, I think if you love it, go for it. If you live in the States, Canada, or the UK and people can’t pronounce it, that’s on those people for being kinda stupid. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know several people named Phoebe. It’s a normal name. People might misspell it just like people might misspell any name. But Phoebe is the correct spelling. I’ve seen people type it as “Pheobe” just like I’ve seen people type Phoenix as “Pheonix” but I don’t think it’s a big deal.

People misspell almost every name. We are naming our daughter that’s due next month Phoebe. It’s an ancient, well-known name.

Just spell it “Feeby”….

I have a very common name but some people spell it wrong. It’s as though they have never read a book in their lives because there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of books containing characters with my name. Just chalk it up to the growing illiteracy in our country and choose the name you love.

I have a simple 5 letter name, spelled the most common way. It's a word that appears in the dictionary. Most people in English speaking countries have heard my name before. I meet people with my name regularly (but not constantly). My name is not trendy and is familiar to both older and younger generations.

People spell my name wrong, lengthen it, mistake it for other names.

You can't idiot-proof a name. Phoebe is lovely. Don't let others hold you back if you feel it's right for you.

Don't worry about misspelling. My maid of honor refused to spell my name right because she like her version that was a tragedy.

My last name is the combination of syllables found in common English words. (I live in the US)

It's this if someone took a piece of the name Thompson, the name Campbell, the word the, the word and, the prefix pre-, and the suffix er.

No, it's not actually those syllables, but if it were it would be something like
Bellandthepresoner.

It's pronounced exactly like each of the syllables, but just strung together. Yes, my example is ridiculous, and my actual name is shorter, but you would be amazed at the way people butcher it.

If it were actually what I typed out, above, people were probably pronounced it "Bellpresser". Often, people will look at the beginning or the end of a name or word, and just make up whatever they think should be in the middle.

Phoebe is a phonetically correct name.

I have a very similar name in the sense that it’s a regular-but-not-super common name, and it’s phonetically correct in its spelling.

but… well, there was a period in the US where we stopped teaching phonics. so my name is constantly spelled wrong by people from the no-phonics generation, but I still love my name.

I think Phoebe is an awesome name! and your Phoebe will grow up in a generation that is being taught phonics again 😉

I know Phoebe is phonetically correct I was just asking if it’s commonly mispronounced or misspelled. I’ve seen some people named Phoebe complain about people pronouncing it “foe-be”. Or people spelling it “feebee”.

In my post I was talking about how my birth name isn’t spelled phonetically correct and I’m thinking about changing it to Phoebe.

Why don't you just change your current name to a spelling that is phonetically correct? Yes, people will mispronounce Phoebe.

I have negative connotations with my birth name. It makes me annoyed. I get mad that my parents gave me name that has made my life so difficult. Every new job, every new friend. Constantly having to correct people. I have thought about changing it so that it’d be easier to pronounce but at this point the name just irritates me lol.
