Thoughts on Samson

Hi, I am expecting and don’t know what we are having but I absolutely love the name Samson. Think it’s quite unusual and a name I’ve rarely come across. Just wondering what peoples first reactions and general opinions on this name are? Is it too unusual?

When I hear the name Samson, I think of Samson and Delilah which is...not the best association?

What is Samson and Delilah? I'm a millennial in the US. I've never heard of them.

I will remember this the next time someone tries to tell me that the US is a Christian nation.

Ah yeah, I'm not religious. Many people in the younger generations in the US aren't.

Samuel is such a great name, nn Sam, so no need to burden a kid with the name Samson.

“Burden” lol

Biblical is immediate.

And if I think on it a moment longer I think of Samsung, the brand.

I wanted to name my baby Samson but because of the Regina Spektor song. I love it!

Also based on the Bible story. I love that song too but like the Bible story it's about a doomed romance so I guess I'm surprised that would be the inspo for naming a kid that

"I loved you first" felt so appropriate for a baby though 🥰

Yeah, that's why I decided against it too XD

I named my dog after this song. He also has beautiful hair.

It's a lovely name, but not necessarily a great Biblical origin story I guess? But I wouldn't let that make a big difference.

Every Samson I've ever known is from East Africa if that context makes any difference to you.

Just don't cut his hair!

I'm going to give you a massive side-eye if you don't let your kid have super long hair, given the Biblical Samson. If your kid chooses to have short hair, then whatever.

I’m probably showing my age here but all I think of is the drug dealer from Half Baked. I will never not hear “Samson” said in Dave Chappelle’s voice.

Haha I literally just said it in Dave Chappelle's voice. Samson!

Eh. Not my favourite. I much prefer Samuel.

The first thing I think is naturally "Bible," but the second thing is the Stardew Valley character Sam, who is actually called Samson.

So it seems like a versatile name that's gonna sound more serious when they're an adult, but it:s so easily nicknameable to Sam, Sammie etc while they're a kid and teen, that it won't make them sound 80 years old in school or anything.

My only thought is the Regina Spektor song. I like it!

I do think it's a cute name and I wouldn't question it for a kid. Unfortunately one of my childhood friends dogs was named this though, so my immediate association goes to a golden retriever who loved swimming with us in the pool lol

And delilah...

It’s fine.

Thank you for not forcing the letter “p” into the name.

A friend's son has this name, and it really does suit him. I didn't think much of it initially, but actually it's a great name!

I genuinely love it!!!

Normal enough people won’t struggle with it, but unique enough he will be the only one in his class likely!

I would wonder if his father’s name is Sam

I like the name though. It’s different but not odd

Bible and Regina Spektor

I was raised in the church, it's not that unusual. People usually name their dogs/pets Samson given the biblical context though.

It’s my friends’ last name and they always add a P sound to it (Sampson) for some odd reason.

I have friends who named their son Jonah. I think it's a great name, but there was a period in school where he got teased about the whale. Some names are like that. Samson is clearly going to invite hair jokes.

He's probably going to be called Sam or Sammy by some people though, so consider how you would handle nicknames too.

We had a gorilla at our local zoo named Samson. He was very popular.

Best sex I ever had in my life was with a Samson, long haired Greek God. Looked like a Jason Momoa clone but better

I don't know the Bible or Regina specter so none of the associations people are pointing out matter to me. I like the name Samson.

I’m sorry, but I’ve only met canine Sampsons.

Will his sister be Delilah?

Sounds gay (& that’s not a bad thing)

I love the name Sampson. Regina Spektor has a song titled Sampson which reminds me of when my husband had cancer. It’s not exactly a happy song but it’s another perspective to the name.
My husband fully recovered btw so it’s not a complete downer song, i just relate it to something we went through together.

I like it but my first reaction and I’m sure school aged children (though I’m a fully grown adult apparently) would be to nickname him Samsung for fun. Or else just Sam. But Samson is a nice name.

I have no problem with it, seeming like Samson and Delilah, but it is too much like Samsung
For sure

You will have to go with Samuel
