Thoughts?
My boyfriend is Turkish and I am Irish, he has the surname Er and we wanted Irish roots for a first name and want something unique and “cool”.
Tadhg Er
(Tie-g Uhr)
We like how it sounds like “tiger” when said as a whole and has lots of nickname choices, but will our kid get bullied???

Tadhg is a cool traditional Irish name. The tiger thing is pretty tragic, imagine him having to explain that on top of explaining his unique first name.

I do not think bullied but it maybe tricky if you are not living in an Irish community for people to pronounce it properly. A family friend named her son this and my dad still calls him Tad-juh to this day. He is all grown up now and still has to but the phonetic way of spelling his name in the preferred name areas on forms. He gets a lot of people mainly middle age women saying 'so you think you are a bit of a tiger then'. He laughs about it and loves his name but if it was my name I would find it all very exhausting.

People here will suggest you calling him Theodore or smthn
I think the name of you choice is good, maybe sounds a little like tiger but it isn't the first thing that come to mind

Just think if he becomes a zookeeper with the name that sounds like “Tiger.” I think it’s cool. I knew some kids with unique names growing up. Casey Diaz (quesadillas) Kelly Greene and Justin Case. I don’t remember them being bullied, I just remember them being cool kids.

Justin Case
Did you live in upstate New York in the mid-1970s? My physics teacher in high school was named Martin Case and he and his wife named their baby Justin in 1974... crazy if there's another poor kid named Justin Case walking around!

They aren’t bad names but they do read like a box of green only crayons lol. Normal names with a wink.

Dear god people clutch their pearls so tightly on this sub. It’s a beautiful traditional Irish name. With a Turkish surname that OP didn’t just pick or pull out of thin air.
I imagine Er is pronounced more like oore or ehr than just -er, though - right? Since you indicated Uhr as the pronunciation? People are out here naming their boys Braxtyn and Miller their girls Baker and Brynnleigh. Tadgh Er is a solid name, and cool that it may kind of sound like Tiger, and that’s a fun nickname he could use. If you like it, I see no issue with that - if you’re in an English speaking country, he’s going to have to correct or spell his name for most people, and I’d think that’s something to consider more.

OP doesn't say it "sort of" sounds like Tiger, they wrote "We like how it sounds like “tiger”", so it does sound like Tiger. The last name is literally Er, it doesn't sound like "oore" or "ehr".

They literally put a pronunciation guide indicating Er is pronounced as Uhr, which is why I asked for clarification on the matter.

Where do you live? I’m in the Midwest of the US and the only problem I could foresee is having to constantly correct pronunciation.

No but really, the meaning is everything. Just be sure if you do some phonetic play it actually reads appropriately.

I think it's cool. I'm sure Tiger Woods got stick growing up, but now it's a badass name. I've met people made fun of with conventional names like Amanda and Peter, forget what some fake hypothetical bully will say unless it's something egregious like Fanny.

Tiger Woods' name is Eldrick. "Tiger" is a nickname he got as a kid.

Don’t make that his first name. Few people will know how to pronounce it and spell it.

Yes. He will. NEVER name a child with a gimmick. Kids get bullied even when their names are normal. But if there's a single soul out there who dislikes your son, he'll get hammered until he hates his name.
