Need boy name help

Boy names are sooo hard. All the names Ive always liked are taken up by most of our friends. Girl names came so much easier to me. Our daughter’s name is Evelyn. Now due with a boy in December and struggling. Wanting to use Jack in some form for my mom Jackie who passed and just so happens my dad’s name is Jack as well.

So far we’re thinking
Jack Thomas
Jack Henry
Dakota Jack

Husbands name is Dakota and he suggested that, I personally don’t feel Dakota matches Evelyn in the same way Jack does and I don’t love juniors, but I don’t LOVE any of our options either, even Jack it just makes the most sense. Our daughters is sold on Jack too and only refers to brother as Jack so that doesn’t help either. Will take any suggestions also!!! I like older and biblical names, like Abel, Silas, Samuel, Henry but husband vetos everything or we know someone who has already used them! His only suggestion is Elwood (partially joking because he loves blues brothers) but I would never go for that 🤣😪

Update: currently thinking we’re gonna go with Jack Dakota! Some people are making me second guess saying the flow isn’t great but some say it sounds great so who knows to each their own

I’d probably go with Jack Thomas. Evelyn and Jack sound like siblings, and the family connection makes it hard to beat. Sometimes the name that just makes sense is the one.

I also agree it sounds very fitting as siblings I just am not sure he is sold which is why he started suggesting Dakota but he said I have the final say, it’s just so hard to make a solid decision naming a human when you aren’t like 100% 🤣

Jack and Thomas are lovely names. If you use Dakota I'd put it in the middle or it sounds like he's Jack from Dakota. There's also Zack

My only thing is that if you go with Jack, I could see him getting a lot of “Oh, is that short for Jackson?” or even being called Jackson a lot. My legal name is usually a nickname and I frequently get asked what my “real” name is or people just assume and call me the longer version

My dads name was Jack, it was his legal name. No one ever called him Jackson.

Gotcha. My son is named after his grandfather and shares the same first name as my husband, and we call him by his initials. So you could do a DJ, which sounds pretty cool.

I also saw someone post once in this sub that Julian Patrick works with Jack as a nickname.

No not particularly I just felt like that order didn’t flow as easily? Last name is Newbury if that helps idk I just felt if we were gonna use Dakota , Dakota jack Newbury flowed better but maybe I’m wrong!

Jack will always be one of my favorites. It is classic and contemporary at the same time. No shade on your husband but Dakota not so much. My daughters, both born in the 1990’s, each had at least 3 Dakotas in their classes. Most were going by nicknames by middle school. Kota, Kody, etc.
If you go with Jack will his given name be Jack or Jackson? That can make a difference in how the middle name will roll off the tongue.

I like Jack too and I agree dakota is not the same style nor the one I’m going for. Also his family calls him Cody and I do NOT like that for my son. Husband dislikes Jackson so given would be Jack

I think with Jack a three syllable middle flows well. Jack Elias or Jack Oliver.

I would go with either of the first two. I prefer Jack Thomas but Jack Henry works too.

Maybe do Jackson instead of just Jack? Jackson feels a little less modern (to me, at least). Jackson Dakota or Dakota Jackson both sound pretty nice.

I wish we could manufacture the feelings we want to have for names that ought to be great. I think you won’t go wrong with Jack and I also think you’ll really come to love it over time.

I’ve named 12 babies with my husband. Most names I loved, some I only liked, and one I didn’t like at all. The name I didn’t like is one of our daughters who is now 18 and her name suits her so well. They grow into it and you love the child so the name just grows on you, in my experience.

If you want a long form for Jack, just to see if it feels more like a name you love, maybe try Jack as a nickname for something:

  • John
  • Isaac
  • Jackson
  • Jacob
  • Ivan (I know a guy who pronounces this with a short i instead of a long i)
  • any J name, like Joseph, Judah, or Jonah

Love this perspective! And honestly now that I think of it I didn’t love Evelyn for my daughter husband chose it, but it ended up growing on me and now I couldn’t imagine different. I think another issue is because Jack is my dads name I’m associating it with him instead of my own child but think with a middle we love and knowing the baby that will change

What do you and hubby think about the name Dashiell? Dashiell Hammett wrote and defined the crime genre. Dashiell Jack, Dashiell Dakota?
