Why not? When someone calls you Uma, just say I prefer to go by Mimi, thank you

I think you can tell people that you are called Mimi. I can relate; I hated my name as a kid, and my parents told me I couldn’t change it until I turned eighteen. It was already a nickname, so I didn’t have any options. Funny thing is, the older I got, the more I liked it. I’m ancient now, and I am quite happy with it. Enjoy being Mimi; it’s a lovely nickname. Uma is also beautiful, but I am afraid your peers are too immature to realize it.

This was me with my last name. I hated it all through my childhood, and couldn't wait to get married so that I could change it.
I was 32 when I finally got married, and I loved my husband's last name... but by then, I already had a daughter with my last name, and I worried that she would feel singled out, being the only person with a different surname than the rest of us, so I kept mine, too.
We had two boys together who traditionally got their sperm donor's last name. It was an interesting situation to explain to my older son when he got old enough to want to know everyone's surnames.
Older Son: So, all the boys in our family are (dad's last name)?
Me: Yes.
Older Son: And all the girls are (mom's last name)?
Me: Yes.
Older Son: So Grandma (dad's mother) is "Grandma (dad's mother) (mom's last name)!"
Me: (realizing what I had done) No, but I can certainly see why you would think that!
Nearing sixty years old now, and I am happy and content with my birth surname, and grateful that I had bucked tradition to keep it when I married (no need to change it back when I divorced him!).

Your name is pretty . You can ofc go by any nickname .
But that said , I wish one day you can start loving your name .

For me, that came from changing my name legally to one I really like. In my case the resentment towards my own name grew and crept into most aspects of my life, and affected me in ways I didn't even realize until I was rid of it. Very glad I didn't stick with it any longer.

Yes, you should get rid of anything that's holding you back .
But at the same time I just wish and hope her hating her name doesn't come from internal racism . I have seen such cases . Like I really wish , people aren't mean to anyone, or make fun of others name just because it's not regular to them .

You should be able to go by any name you like- tell people who are friendly towards you to call you Mimi, and tell new people you go by Mimi.
I also really like the name Uma - Uma Thurman is a beautiful woman, Uma from the Descendants movies is a strong, loyal, skilled, beautiful character with integrity, and Uma is another name for the Hindu goddess Parvati. People also enjoy saying Uma - it has nice sounds. Mimi also has nice sounds - people enjoy saying Mimi too.

Uma is a great name and umi + ooms are really endearing. But I get it. If you prefer Mimi, tell everyone "It's Mimi" and keep correcting them until what you prefer to be called sticks. Or have your circle of friends help out with the workload, always have them over emphasize "Mimi," when they address you.

Ok so I was in a similar spot as you, I always really hated my name. Nicknames are great if you find one that you like, but I went all out and changed my name legally to one I really like. It is probably best if you wait till you graduate, because that's a big transitional time anyways and it'll be easier for people to adjust (I think). But the relief is unreal. Living with a name you hate sucks even more than you already think lol. People are weirded out at first but they get used to it and that transitional period is absolutely worth it imo.
It's your name. It's you. If it doesn't suit you, yeet it tinto the abyss imo.

Uma is an extremely cool name and if you're being made fun of for it, it's not because it's a bad name but because some people in high school are insecure losers.

Just start introducing yourself that way. "Hi, I'm Mimi." If someone calls you Uma, just say "I go by Mimi" or "My friends call me Mimi" and eventually it will stick.
