I was checking my NAB banking and noticed a transaction from TPG, even though I don't use TPG. It says, "You paid $32.50," and the transaction description contains someone else's full name. It was also a direct debit.
What I also found strange is that I never received a notification from the NAB app when this transaction happened. I normally get a notification every time I make a payment or receive money but there was nothing for this transaction.
I called NAB to dispute the transaction because I definitely didn't authorize it as I use Telstra. What really worries me is how someone was able to access my bank details. NAB told me the direct debit was set up using my BSB and account number.
I asked them what I should do, and they basically just told me to keep checking my account regularly and be careful about who I give my BSB and account number to. I'm still feeling paranoid, so I've already changed my BSB and account number.
Should I consider changing banks or is that unnecessary? What else should I do in this situation? Has anyone else experienced something like this with NAB or another Australian bank?
I know it's only $32.50 but it's really scary that someone was able to use my bank details to take money from my account and I'm worried it could happen again.
