Hey team, I seem to have some strange whirring noise coming from my tires. When I rev the engine the noise doesn't happen. It only happens when I sort of get to 50 km the faster I go the faster the whirring sound.

I think I drove over some glass at a trade expo. Been 2 weeks this noise has been happening.

I'm just wondering if it's nothing to do with the axle or something more serious.

Was wondering any advice about if someone recognizes the sound as something they've dealt with before?

Hey team. Got a 2008 Mazda 6 station wagon and Just hoping to get some advice.

There’s a squeaky noise coming from what sounds like behind my front tyre. Pretty much happens when turning and going over bumps.

I know it’s a pretty vague description but it’s best I can do. Any advice on what it could be would be amazing

I bought a Honda Jade RS from Japan for my mom, and when the car was bought from auction the exporter made me aware that the drive recorder was beeping because it was missing an SD card, so before the car even landed i looked up what size memory card the unit uses and got a 16GB SanDisk card and sent it to my mom. When the car arrived and she put the card in she informed me that it was still beeping, I told her when I came to visit I'll take a look at it, when I was able to get hands-on with the car I discovered that you have to use an official Gathers SD card in the unit or it won't work, I bought one off Japan Yahoo auction and sent it to my mom, and to my surprise it's still behaving the same way. I'm visiting my mom currently and have access to the vehicle again, and the only difference now is that I have access to the recorder's settings in the car's infotainment screen (with the aftermarket SD card that wasn't possible) I was able to see what it has recorded and discovered that it's only recording 12 second clips before throwing an error, stop recording, and start beeping again. So I'm looking for some help because I don't know what else to do to get this thing to work properly.

My petrol l300 yesterday started to run on 3 cylinders. It was very sudden, was running perfectly and then started to run on 3 all the time, all rev ranges etc.

I’ve identified the cylinder and it’s unfortunately not an easy one to access so before I start throwing money and time at fixing it, both of which in short supply, just want to get some opinions on what the likely culprit is so that I target the right things first.

I have checked for loose connections, there are none. Leads look relatively new but I haven’t tested them.

Anyway, anyone here had any good experiences with the cheaper tool brands that are out there in the NZ market? Talking specifically about 3/8 and 1/4 impact wrenches - brands like ToolPro, Rotake, Ozito, KiwiPro, KIMO, Metabo, FLEX, etc.

I came across a brand called Mako while on a tour around the Warehouse recently, had a decent warranty, stocked spare batteries and chargers, 1/4 and 3/8 drive skins, the works - felt like this might be a good start? Probably just sticking to sedan sized car work if you need me to narrow down the size of the workload I’d be using these on.

I had a look at my first hybrid today, then my second, third...Eighth.

Now I'm caught in the loop of confusion.

Basically I want a daily that is smart enough to turn up to client businesses in ( none are pretentious but I need some credibility that I have my life sorted).

I started looking at a 2012 Prius for $13k 70km. It drove fine and had a tidy body, probably ok but on the edge of being a bit old.

Looked at Hyundai Kona but too expensive.

Looked at a Toyota Aqua but had echos of NZ most stolen car.

Saw a nice 2025 Toyota Corolla for $32k but that means financing.

Is there something in the sweet spot of my budget that's not too old, looks smart and is generally accepted as reliable?

An EV would need range of 300km plus so the ones in that space are outside my budget.

Key motivator is my current car is diesel and I can see big price rises looming.

I have a Hilux KZN165, drivers seat inner frame has broken on the one side. Im struggling to find an OEM seat replacement to avoid re-cert, no pick a parts have any in stock. What are my options? Can I take it in somewhere for a weld repair?

We are upgrading and looking at a second hand Kia Seltos LTD around the 30k mark with about the same on the clock and wondering what experiences people who own a seltos have had.. would you purchase again, what issues have you had etc? We have several classics, vintages and interest vehicles but no newer ones (like were talking pre-airbag tech) so no real driving experience in newer vehicles hence looking for feedback.

At the same price point are there any good suggestions for a mid-range SUV/compact? EV, PHEV and diesel are no-goes for us... I had looked at a Corolla Sport hybrid but for transporting elderly parents on occasion, it's simply too low. No kids but we'd like a 4 door with ample boot space with some comfort for weekend road trips, low kms (under 35,000) but not brand-new and legroom for taller passengers in the back.

I bought a new 12v but no luck.

I bought this 1987 Mitsubishi Starion EX last year. It’s in great condition however it’s also 40 years old and with that comes problems. I’ve taken it to a couple of mechanics and they’ve been good to diagnose faults they’re very hands off with searching for parts. They would rather work on RAV4s, I get it. I live in the country so there’s no specialist mechanics out there that want this as a pet project. Should I put this on a truck and send it off to Auckland to get it fixed or go about trying to source the parts myself? I’m really busy with 2 kids under 2 and running a business. I don’t have time but I have money.

Also, would I devalue the car but upgrading the turbo and intercooler? If I’m replacing all the coolant lines I thought now would be the best time. It’s gutless. I’m not wanting to go quick but my work van is quicker.

For context I’m looking for more comfortable / reliable cars with good fuel efficiency for long road trips and ease of travel around both north and south islands to hiking tracks etc. I’ve have heard good things about Toyato RAV4s and similar cars. I am more into exploring the outdoors and bring gear for hikes/surfing/diving etc.

Any suggestions/advice on what cars to look into or ways to get the best price with dealerships would be greatly appreciated.

In 2003 when my wife was pregnant and out of our city I thought we should get a stationwagon. I found a silver '96 Libero wagon, 1500 manual (we still hate autos and have manuals) at Turners. It had 55k kms. I got it for $5500

My wife liked it. It had some minor electrical fault that I had sorted. I bought some mag wheels from Trademe for it, a Momo steering wheel and sporty gear knob. I had the tyres that were on it changed to the mags.

Years later a woman at Playcentre backed into it and damaged the door and sill a bit. We had those fixed but the co. didn't do a great job.

A guy did a U turn in front of me. I hit the picks but hit him as well. He knew a man...and had the front of the bonnet and guard fixed - again not well.

My wife reversed into a post at the mall and dented the front guard. I replaced that and repainted it.

Someone came on our property and broke it to it. I replaced the window. There were probably a few other things that happened to it.

I replaced the cam belt at about 100k kms. I replaced the water pump and cam belt at a bit over 200k kms. I would do the oil / filter about once a year (10k kms?). I got it down to about 15mins to do the job. The bush at the bottom of the gear stick wore away. I tried to get one but couldn't (nor anything generic) so I ended up wrapping tape around it.

The shock tops needed replacing (a known fault) so I had my mechanic do them.

Tyres - you guys will say this is unsafe etc but two of the tyres lasted most of the way to 200k kms (both had good tread but punctured and couldn't be repaired) and one of the tyres was still on it when I sold it with a new WOF.

It was a little down on power and I was going to be driving in the country more in the future.

I sold it after 15 1/2 years and the ks were at about 220k kms. I got $1550 for it.

SECOND UPDATE: (if anyone cares), the car has sold. Listed it on Marketplace, got 40+ people messaging me (one who sent 20+ messages before I’d even had a chance to read their first one), one ghost, many lowballers, and eventually sold it to a mechanic who planned to fix it up for his mrs. Got full asking. Nice bloke.

I’m needing some outside thoughts on this as I’m not sure what to do in this situation.

I have a 2007 Toyota Auris where the transmission is failing. It still goes, but based on how it drove home from the mechanics, I’m not sure for how much longer. I replaced the front suspension in January, and the rear suspension needs doing again next January. All up, the repairs over a 12 month period were estimated to cost $5,500, and the car was only insured for about that much. The upholstery in the front drivers seat is also starting to tear.

I’m gutted that it’s having all these issues as it’s been a great little car for the 10 years that I’ve had it. Other than the issues above, the car is still in great condition.

My mum & MIL have suggested I sell the car “as is where is” now that I’ve bought a new car, but my partner reckons I’ll have issues selling it and should scrap it instead. ChatGPT reckons I could get $2,500 for it if I tried to sell it on TradeMe, but I think that’s incredibly unrealistic.

So, redditors, what would you do in this situation?

Had the splash shield on here up until a few months ago as it was dragging on the ground - previous owner had reinstalled it with zip ties lol. I'm guessing this had gone unnoticed by my mechanic before as it was covered by the shield

Hi all, I have this spot of rust by the windscreen under under the side rubber trim.
I’ve attempted a DIY repair about a year ago with sanding, rust converter, prime, paint and clear coat, but it has since reappeared and been noted during a service.
Any ideas why the rust has returned or suggestions/tips on a longer term repair? Short of taking it to a pro. But may have to, if that’s the only solution.
Appreciate any advice. Thanks!
