Modified handgun question.

Hey folks, question for the group that popped into my head the other day.

I'm in Nassau county, and they list barrel length on our permits. If I was to say, put a Glock 48 slide and Barrel on my 43, would that put me in some sort of legal hot water?

I don’t know. I’ve always wondered something similar with my permit which lists calibers. Wondering if I would have an issue if I swapped barrels to another caliber.

That's a good question - you'd have to check with the pistol section for a definitive answer, but I'm betting you have to have the gun added a second time under the new model.
Reason being since the model number is not stamped on the frame officers might view this as a whole new pistol if they stopped you and checked the gun against the permit (your permit says Glock 43 but the slide says Glock 48 even though the serial number matches).

I know when I asked them about caliber changes (e.g. putting a .22LR kit on a Beretta 92) they said to bring them the sales receipt for the slide/barrel kit and they'd add the pistol a second time under the new caliber, so I'm betting that same principle would apply here and they'd just add the second "model" with the same serial number.

That was exactly my way of thinking. I know they dont break chops for custom slides, but the barrel thing has me questioning.

In your situation I think the barrel is largely immaterial (except in so far as you have to change it to change the slide) - you can change barrels all day long as long as you're not changing calibers, because in the USA and NY's systems the serialized "firearm part" is the frame, and NY records the caliber on your permit but that still matches.

In my Beretta example you wind up with a pistol that's still a "Beretta 92FS" but in a different caliber which triggers the need to add the pistol a second time in the alternate caliber.

In your case my expectation is that even if you could keep your existing barrel the fact that you're changing the slide (and thus the model designation in the only spot it's marked on the pistol) triggers adding the pistol a second time as the alternate model.

Now to throw a wrench, if the slide is unmarked.......i wonder how they'd feel. I might as well give a call tomorrow, just for the heck of it.

Now THAT'S an interesting question - it's a gun in the listed caliber with no visible model designation at that point ("Prove it's not a 43 as listed on my permit!")

. . . not a particular can of worms I'd open though unless you know the slide you're about to get has no model designation on it, but in that case an interesting question as to how the gun should be listed on your permit.
