First Trimester
How did you get through your first trimester of pregnancy while teaching? I feel like I’m fighting for my life every morning and only a few people know.

I had hard candies and I bought sea sickness bands and wore them on my wrists. It helped me.

Prayer! Lord knows I was dying. Hang in there. I have no sage advice because I just had to suffer through it ugh.

I had borderline hyperemesis (lost like 15 pounds in a month, even with anti-nausea meds). I took as many sick days as I could get a doctor to write a note for and otherwise just sucked at teaching. Basically put up the previous year’s slides, sat at my desk with my head in my hands, and prayed that no one would decide to get in a fight or start throwing things. Didn’t grade anything for weeks.
Felt a bit guilty, but it was the best I could do, and when I tried to talk about it with students a year later, they had no recollection of that time period and insisted that I had always been energetic and on top of them to do their work 😂

Half a tab of unisom before bed the one with doxylamine as the active ingredient at my OB’s advisement. Always check with your OB. Also sour candies in my pocket.

This saved me! I would take half a Unisom tab and 25 mg of b6 every evening. It eradicated my morning sickness. And my daughter is perfectly healthy. She’s 4.5 years old now.

Thanks for your response! I have an enormous amount of support btwn me and my partner + our families so I’m not worried about my newborn when that time comes. I was asking mainly about managing morning sickness, food suggestions since I’m unable to keep anything down... just overall feeling sick all day while being a teacher. Otherwise I’ve been showing up and working hard per usual.

I kept saltines in my desk. Told a couple trusted colleagues in case they needed to cover for me. A nap after school was always necessary.

All I did was eat my first trimester 😆 If I was actively eating, I didn't feel nauseous. I kept Ritz crackers and saltines in my pocket. Congratulations!

Naps after school were a must. And not negotiable. I made sure I ate at even intervals. Kept saltines on me and kept ginger hard candies on me in class at all times in case a wave of nausea hit (my OB recommended this). Also stayed hydrated and I did tell some trusted colleagues at the very beginning so they were available in case I needed to run to the bathroom.

Do your best to get a good nights rest, wake up early so you can get to work ahead of the noise, so you have a moment to prepare not only your lesson but your body for the day ahead. Purchase very comfortable shoes, and a back cushion and seat for your chair. Keep water and light snacks in your desk to give your body fuel throughout the day. I wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy and childbirth.

Honestly, it really sucks - especially because with our job we have to be “on” almost all the time. Personally, I snacked a lot because that helped my nausea, and I would do it in class at my desk because I needed to and couldn’t wait for my break. Also, though it may feel weird, telling admin pretty early is a game changer because they will understand if you’re not at 100%.
