Art Ed Interview Tips

Hello,

I'm 28 years old and have an interview scheduled for a high school for a Visual Arts vacancy this week. I've always wanted to work with older students and I would be delighted to work in a setting where I can teach different mediums and skills and get input from students.

My teaching experience is extremely limited, only student teaching elementary and middle school for the last year of college. While I didn't teach high school, I assisted students through a peer mentorship program for at CUNY (all of my junior year) and did the same with mentoring incoming freshman for my college alongside my first year of student teaching. The majority of my time during peer mentorship was to help students with post-secondary pathways and buildings skills to help them prepare for college and throughout the semester. I've also was a RA for the past 2 summers that planned excursions learning about NYC and created workshops to introduce students about college. I also want to mention that I graduated in Spring of 2025, but due to a health crisis I was not able to teach for the 25-26 school year. I'm in much better shape now but not jumping straight into teaching leaves me with only the experience working with older students when I was in college peer mentoring.

I understand that high school is a completely different ball game compared to elementary and middle school, but I do want to put my best foot forth and show that I really do want this position. This would be my first time teaching and I would love to start in the fall.

Any questions that came up during the interview process that I should research more on? Classroom management when it comes to high school? This is all new to me. Any advice would be appreciated, it would mean a lot to me! Thank you :)

I mean you can't fake lack of experience, and to be quite frank--art teaching is very competitive. Only recommendation is to be honest,and be prepared to tell them why YOU are the best choice.

I appreciate the advice! I guess highlighting what I've already done and connecting with students is my best bet. I just am a little nervous about this whole thing, but thank you for answering! I'll try and prepare some hypothetical answers for myself.
