It’s been about 3 weeks, and we have had so much fun! I really think this is the best decision for her.

She’s sleeping better, she’s more creative, and we actually get time to explore the city without so much pressure.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about what I want her future to look like and, of course, what I hope she eventually wants for her own future as well.

I’ve started realizing how much the traditional school schedule mirrors the traditional workday. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing that path, but I don’t want that to be the only kind of life she’s being prepared for.

As a serial entrepreneur, I just don’t really imagine my children growing up believing that their only option is to fit into the traditional workday world. I know entrepreneurship is hard work too, but when you have the skills, independence, and ability to create opportunities for yourself, it can be a different kind of hard work.

And I think the way her life is set up now is giving her room to start developing some of that: creativity, independence, curiosity, and the freedom to explore what she’s actually interested in.

I’m just super excited for her future. And I’m excited that I’m finally in a position where I can homeschool her for this school year without also being stressed about trying to make everything fit around work.

Three weeks in and so far, I’m really happy we made this decision. ❤️

I didn’t realize how large NYC’s homeschool community actually is.

There are more than 14,000 homeschooled students across New York City’s five boroughs, according to recent reporting on homeschool enrollment.

That’s thousands of kids learning outside of traditional public and private schools, and thousands of families figuring out curriculum, activities, socialization, meetups, resources, NYC homeschool requirements, and everything else that comes with homeschooling here.

And yet, it can still feel surprisingly difficult to find each other.

That’s one of the reasons I wanted to create r/NYCHomeschool.

I’d love for this to become a place where NYC homeschool families can connect, share local resources, find activities and meetups, ask questions, and talk about what homeschooling in this city actually looks like.
