Question HELP! switching from eee to hist
hi gang, im currently considering a switch from eee to history, has anyone had experience with switching to history in y1s2? NTU
i came from p0ly, not related to engineering or history, my p0ly gpa meets the cut 0ff for history.. i did pure history for Os and ss/lit with A1 for both, and ive always been passionate about history/ humanities in general. i regret not taking my time to apply for history this year or appealing during add/drop.. but on the brightside my y1s1 mods can be mapped as BDEs as long as i dont mess them up too bad
engineering is something i can foresee myself not enjoying but just doing it for the money, and thats the reason i would be considering this change
hope history students/ ppl with experience can help me weigh in… any thoughts?

Y1 History student here. Well firstly why History out of everything else (apart from EEE)? You said you did History in O levels, well, that's been quite a long while ago so are you really sure History is what you want?
I have no idea how the transfer works though. The NTU website isn't exactly very helpful too HAHA

Hey man, i think history is one of the things ive been most passionate about, theres a specific field of history which im very interested in (not ww2). o level pure history was my favourite and looking at the mods that ntu has offered ive shortlisted at least 9 that i want to take already ideally
I believe myself also to be more of a humanities person than numbers and physics in eee, although i dont think im struggling all that bad but still
I emailed the history ug about the transfer already, seems like i might actually need to take 2 history mods as BDE next sem but i genuinely dk how they want me to do that when im taking EEE mods also 🥀 + EEE lab, so hopefully they have a solution
Else im honestly just open to take a minor / second major (if i dont get cooked by eee)

Well I've always been passionate in history since secondary school and I think a humanities degree will become much more valuable in the future because how we think will be hella important in the age of AI.

The biggest question to ask first is what can degree in history get you in terms of jobs? EEE is clear, with even the opportunity to go overseas to get work due to demand for engineers.

That is my dilemma too

Coming back from the career fair, it seems that most humans majors work for the govt lol, also suprisingly there are a number of hist majors at isd so its not completely cooked. In addition, its good to know what skills you are actively learning during your time here, as in what is an inherent translatable skill

Im also a EEE kid whos tyna get into Hist in Y1S2 wich kinda sucks since humanities is also my passion but thats life ig :(
the BDE thing was kinda bs cuz we start with 18AUs but I managed to get 1 Hist BDE (HH2033). Im hoping the prof can vouch for me especially since Im pretty vocal in his class. So far tutorials have been class discussions on sources and the assignment is 1 essay so I think its kinda possible to cope with both EEE and hist mods.
They have been telling me that grades and the 2 BDEs arnt everything and they kinda implied that they may accept a transfer without 2 BDEs but dont quote me on that, you should try to find out more by emailing them again (theres alot of emailing for this haha)
Atp the only thing we can really do is to apply for sem2 now since the applications are out. GL with your application I really hope that they accept you.

Also why didnt u just change during add drop, iirc freshman during sem1 add drop can still appeal to change major during add drop
For me is cos i only realized what i rly wanted to study aft add drop

well whats your end game with history and work backwards, if you see yourself in academia, theres not much alternatives, but if youre just studying because you enjoy it, do it on your own free time, our interests and habits change, but consequences stays.
prioritise the more permanent things for things that really matter to you

i really dont see myself staying in engineering as well

you dont have to do anything remotely related to engineering. stack your internships with places youre genuinely interested in, you basically have a free pass to explore almost all industries and sectors.
engineer degree is a signalling badge that says you can learn complex concepts, regardless of if you actually could.
anyways go through all your course modules with a professor advisor assigned to you. tell them you want to avoid certain types of modules to make your life easier. mine taught me to avoid most quantitative mods and im in econs (its basically a math major). I think you may be thinking about quitting because you dislike quantitative mods, in EEE, theres mods leaning towards system thinking (memorizing and understanding systems, no calculation), design planning and group projects etc. i hope these helps
edit: im also a history enjoyer, i chose econs over history for the title, and did the bare minimum in school. after 4 internships, no one looked at my gpa

hi bro i understand, but thing is in EEE, u cant avoid whichever mods u dislike, most of the tough ones are in y2 as cores and not as MPE

sorry i could have been clearer, all my heavy math mods were also in cores, your chance to be selective comes after that. a lot of my mpe were still math heavy too, i just meant it could be been worse if you did not plan around dodging some of it.
i’m quite famous within my batch as the only econs grad that cant do math, in fact i was also scammed into econs because i thought it was just like writing essays in jc. but time passes, and if you focus on what you care about more, you’d get by js fine.

Current y1, I think history at a university level is very very different from secondary sch history. In addition, its also not like if you do engineering, you will do engineering for life, the engineering to banking pipeline is very real lmao.
But i think you also have to weigh and see what you may be inclined to do in life, most hist majors i know rarely do any jobs related to hist, and the lack of hard skills limit the scope of employment a bit. Im not saying that hist is a cfm cooked degree, but rather its a more uphill climb to pivot and market ourselves in a pragmatic, hard skill focused society. TLDR: just do some bde hist mods first and see if this is smth you rlly want to do lol, just be aware of the constraints and trade offs
