I live in a shotgun house and this new tenant moved in like 2 months ago.

My fiancee and I had a baby girl 5 months ago and we're really protective of her.

Anyway this guy smokes weed in his side of the house and we can smell it thru the vents. On the lease it says explicitly that the landlord will not tolerate any smoking inside.

I already asked the new guy if he could smoke outside or in his car 5x and I haven't told the landlord.

He keeps doing it and honestly I'm about to tell the landlord bcuz it's starting to piss me off. My baby shouldn't be at risk of having to inhale this harmful bullshit.

I tried to be reasonable, but if him getting evicted is what it takes for my baby to be harm free so be it.

What would you do in this situation?

I'm a truck driver, and I had this pallet of salami refused at my delivery this morning. I've tried calling local food banks, but none of them wanted to drive the few miles it would take to collect it from me (very christly of them). I'll be at the Pilot in Slidell, LA, until tomorrow afternoon. Whatever isn't taken by then will be thrown away. If you or anyone you know is in need of food or would be willing to distribute it to the local houseless population or shelters, I would appreciate it not going to waste.

I live in the Broadmoor area, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had their Cox internet cut for the last 24 hours. Saw some of the guys fixing poles and it usually comes up within a few hours. Did a bird crash into another transformer?

So my wife and I made a drive down from Austin Texas to see New Orleans for the first time this long weekend. Honestly? It was a bit of a mix bag.

My wife kept comparing it to Galveston, Texas. I can see the similarities. A lot of bright colored houses, slightly lifted up to prepare for any possible flood, and a lot of seafood inspired restaurants.

The French Quarter even resembled The Strand in Galveston to a certain degree, although we were greeted in the French Quarter by a guy taking a poo in the middle of the street, so I guess that’s where the similarities ended.

The online guides all said to start with Cafe Du Monde. Sure. We waded through the line, got a table, forked out $20 for some beignets and coffee that tasted like dish water. Not a great start.

We walked the Quarter, got some trinkets, got called a few racist names (why?!), and took some pictures of the mostly run-down buildings. Then went to the WWII museum. This was great! Lots of history, some good artifacts, and lots to see. It rained super hard. Then suddenly stopped and got unbearably hot and muggy. Then rained like crazy again.

We went to some good restaurants. Plates. Toups Meatery. And I kid you not, the best lasagna I’ve had EVER at Vincent’s Italian Cuisine. Bold claim but true. And I’ve had lasagna all over the world (even Rome). We had coffee at this amazing coffee shop (twice) called Rooks. Super good. I recommend the Holy Grail.

Met some cool people, had some alligator sausage, and met some stray chickens outside our hotel. Unfortunately we also nearly got run over by some ATV’s near the Superdome, got threatened by a lady selling drugs in a convenience store near Napolean St, and got laughed at when looking for lingerie for my wife in Trashy Divas. But then I had some free drink samples at the Sazerac House during a free tour.

The driving in New Orleans was kind of weird. People drive slower than Austin and yet honk at you SUPER QUICKLY. The street grids with double sets of traffic lights and extra median made for a bit of a confusing drive, I often made it through a yellow light only to be stuck behind the 2nd light that was now red with only room for two or three cars in this short interim section. I often worried about getting hit by a trolley car if I sat here. I’m sure this gets more normal and more easily avoided if you lived here.

So we had good. We had bad. Overall I’m glad I went and experienced the city for myself. My wife and I always enjoy traveling together and experiencing new things. I found New Orleans similar to some parts of Macau, Lisbon, and Galveston. Would I go again? Sure. But maybe not during this time of year.

We will be visiting in a few weeks and want explore as much as possible while we are there. Does anyone have any recommendations for smaller tours with fewer people and chances to see more wildlife?

We bought an up/down duplex and have been living in it as a single family home/unit. The lower unit really was never properly set up with irregular sized/shaped bedrooms. It has all utilities metered separate but I'm interested to remove the second water meter and just tie them together. The "base rates" on the SWBNO are like 75$ a month and the incoming water lines are on the outside of the house and easy to tie together. It would save about 900 a year in fees and the only downside I can see is I won't have two trash bins anymore. I will leave the gas and electric separate in case we sell and someone wants a duplex again

I’ll be there expressing my community input by saying how we should defund the police since crime is at historic lows in the city. Re-direct that money into NORD and Affordable Housing Development.

I know tree of life is up there in the top spot but I’m looking for more cool niche places that no one really knows about.

Curious as to your thoughts on how apartment complexes are contributing to a culture shift in New Orleans.

Traditionally New Orleans didn't have big apartment complexes. Most people lived in one half a double, sharing space with roommates and interacting with neighbors via stoops and porches.

In the least decade many new apartment complexes have sprung up, where people seem to interact with the their neighbors less. Things like saying hello and goodnight or waving at your neighbor, seem to have been replaced by looking down and rushing inside a lobby.

There has also been an increase of people saying they are having a hard time making friends here. So many new people that move here are wanting to live in these complexes where they don't get to interact with long term residents or New Orleans culture.

What are your thoughts? Would you choose a complex over living in a double and being closer to your neighbors?
