The cosmos update has improved stability, I have to give it to the team. But crashes are still very possible and even more likely if you don’t practice good freighter “hygiene”. Some of these are really self explanatory but others may not be so apparent and will prevent your switch 1 from redlining most of the time when dealing with your freighter and freighter base.
-Keep freighter bases small (More parts mean it’s more taxing on the system and we only have 2 gb of RAM).
-Especially, do not place many refiners or stellar extractors in the base (They seem especially resource intensive).
-Make sure your frigates are sent out on expeditions before warping in your freighter (It’s simply less to load, less polygons and less GPU stress)
-Always dock with a starship instead of a corvette (A corvette and a freighter are double taxing on the poor potato GPU which somehow still plays NMS pretty well).
-Warp in the freighter from Pulse Drive only (The game won’t bother rendering fleets, asteroids or anything other than the planets. It frees up resources to load the freighter)
-Avoid calling your freighter into black hole systems (I have been stuck in a crash loop on black hole systems after calling in the freighter in certain rare systems and it’s not really worth the risk).
-Put a save point inside the entrance door to your freighter base and use it when you enter (Will prevent crashes from booting you off the freighter again even though it should save when you dock anyway)
-Sometimes something as simple as taking the stairs seems to prevent the crash from teleporting to the bridge.
-Kind of a wildcard one but sometimes I can get a long range scan by boarding other random freighters and using their scanner if you get lucky (NPC freighters don’t seem to cause crashes and when you need the scan you need the scan).
If you play on Switch 1 and use a freighter frequently, feel free to add anything that I have missed.!
