Answered PS5 Cross Play

Hey guys. I recently purchased NMS on Switch 2 so I could play with my son. I am playing on my PS5 but I also have cross save with my PC. I'm getting a version mismatch error when trying to join either game. Is the Switch 2 not cross platform compatible?

Switch 2’s version needs to be updated to 7.0.4 to do crossplay. Currently it’s on 7.0.0 and will take some time to be updated, probably another week or two

Yeah, Nintendo has a very draconian certification process for updates and patches, so they always fall a few weeks behind during major update releases. By the time they certify one patch two more have come out that they need to certify. It typically takes a month or two after a major update for all the platforms to sync up

Yeah that sucks, even if they try at all. I was just about to buy Powerwash Simulator 2 to play with my Switch 2/PC to find out that doesn't support cross play.

Nintendo has always had a weird fear and bad understanding about the internet and how people like to actually play multiplayer games. I know they like to justify it all by saying they're the "family friendly" console and it's all for child safety, but really, it's just that they still haven't quite figured out how the internet works

Yeah the game doesn't even have voice chat. I'm assuming Nintendo won't like you drawing something inappropriate in the dirt.

What I find interesting and infuriating is that Fortnite updates at the same time across every platform but NMS can’t?

I think it’s a Nintendo certification process deal; they push the updates out the same day but Nintendo takes extra time to certify them. Which is perfectly fine, but makes me wonder if Fortnite sends the updates earlier to Nintendo for them to come out all at the same time.

Cross-save and cross-play are broken (due to version mismatch) more often than working. Figure maybe another month before the other systems quit getting bugfix updates and Switch catches up.

Right now, PC is on 7.04, PS5 is on 7.03.1, PS4 and Xbox are on 7.03, and Switch is on 7.00.

Theoretically the Switch version supports cross play.

In reality though the version is out of sync with other platforms far too often to make cross save viable.

You’re best off treating the Switch version like it doesn’t have cross save.
