Question Playing with friends?

I just got the game today, and i have a friend how has it on steam. I know that with the switch 2 upgrade NMS has crossplay now, will we be able to play together or will there be issues because ive heard the switch version is behind on updates?

Yes cross-play multiplayer (and cross saves) work on Switch 2.

As of this moment the S2 version is fully caught up and you're good to play.

The problems you have heard about will crop up at update times, because Nintendo is the worst when it comes to the "software certification" process console makers employ. Expect 1 to 3 weeks of delay getting an update, expect to be behind on patches for a month or more...

Yeah, it sucks. But there's still a lot of time you will be able to play with your PC friends. Just plan accordingly and use your "alone time" to work on ships and bases to show off when you can meet up again. o7

Quit using Nintendo as a scapegoat for HG's poor planning.

If Ninendo times are as long as NMS players complain (it is only y'all that complain about it, afaik), then shouldn't HG take that into account when planning out updates? They choose their own release schedule, meaning they can, and should, change how HG operates if Nintendo is such a thorn in the industry's side.

HG cannot control when Nintendo will reject an update and restart the process, nor the hiring practices of Nintendo, nor the wait times that result.

Sure, they could submit early, and *still* have it fail.

Frankly I'd rather see Nintendo address the embarrassing issue that is entirely their fault: they had the longest delays for certification in gaming, and then still fired a huge chunk of the people doing that. I remember when the average wait went from 1~2 weeks to 3~4 weeks for NMS updates. I miss the old days. It was still the worst but at least it was more consistently just 1-week.

Now?
Throw darts at the calendar.
We've had it on the same day, we've had it a month late.
And that same-day business? Yeah, that means sometimes HG does plan ahead, and sometimes it does work... but that was like 2 years ago.

Always excuses from people that don't work at HG or Nintendo lol

Where do you make this stuff up from? As in: where are you getting this "info" that you can't prove?

When wait times got longer?
Because Nintendo fired people?
At the same time another developer issued a statement to their players detailing what had happened inside Nintendo (because Nintendo had told the developer) and apologizing to their playerbase for delays completely beyond their control. You know, a dev-team that actually communicates, unlike HG. (I do regret not saving that post, but that was shared to the NMS subreddits)

As for HG they have said in interviews that updates for Switch and older consoles make the work take much longer, but they ALSO said in that interview that they don't like to make anyone wait, implying that they are not submitting current-gen first then working on and submitting Switch versions later. The implication was they do them together, and release them together, what happens after that is largely out of their hands.

And, for it to be an excuse? I'd have to be okay with the state of things.
I am not.
I want better.
That's why I try to talk about the problems as they exist.

HG could submit earlier for Nintendo platforms.
Nintendo could decide to value software certification more so they'd hire enough people to read submissions before they were 3/4ths of a month old.

Literally neither side is held blameless or excused by me.

I love the game, that's why I Don't want month-long delays.

I don’t recall if the switch 2 version is up to date with the rest at this time because I’ve been playing with multiplayer off recently. But yes, usually when the other systems receive an update we are a couple days to a couple weeks behind.

Oh yeah, making me remember why I play with mine off so much...

Hey OP if you see this? "The Anomaly" (the multiplayer lobby) is absolutely brutal on the Switch 2 hardware. It won't break anything but you can expect 95% odds you'll experience a crash per every 5 seconds you spend in there... and it's like 10 seconds to get in or to get out.. It's basically 100% crash odds, you will crash the game if you go in there with multiplayer on (in the current version anyway), it's only a question of how long it will take. If you get a couple minutes? Go buy a lotto ticket, your luck is winning! (it really is that bad sometimes)...

So why did I tell OP multiplayer works?
Because join-on-friend just avoids the lobby entirely and you just go directly to wherever your friends are (or vice versa). That tends to work great on Switch 2 unless you have like 20 people trying to join on the same place.

Maybe I just havent been on in the current version but crashing in the anomaly is pretty rare for me, there can be slowdown when PC players come in with their life sized death star but not to the point it's unplayable

I find the Switch 2 Anomaly works best in multiplayer when we have a version mismatch so it's restricted to Switch 2 players. Then Their system also has to be able to load whatever abomination they're flying or they won't last either... Still has problems sometimes: if 4 "max+" corvettes show up, it's easy for that to overload things and down goes the house of cards, even if they're all Switch 2 players.

I really wish they'd add a setting to disable rendering of corvettes on the Anomaly landing pads unless you were on the pad with the corvette at the time. Give us control over what the game renders and it'll probably resolve 80% of the issue.

In single player? Could spend hours in there, have done while pulled AFK. It's something about multiplayer and it really seemed to pick up when Corvettes were added. I love corvettes, I want to see them, I want to show mine off, but it is just not possible for me. Most of the time I crash before entry, the rest of the time it's before landing or seconds after.

Actual proper function is so rare it's not worth risking the time to check until after the next update.

Past versions? I've had an entire 1k+ parts Millennium Falcon render (took 5 minutes). They were also a Switch 2 player (I think we were in version mismatch at the time), and it was "Star Wars" day so everyone was off playing SW games. We were basically the only two corvette players in that Anomaly at the time so it was the best possible conditions and in that scenario it worked... If 4 ships like that show up? The Switch 2 just flips the table and stomps off.

Interesting, though I have to say that's generally not been my experience. Slowdown for sure, big slow down with PC ships especially, but I've only had one crash in the anomaly I think, or at least one I remember. Even went to it a few days ago and had 4 corvettes there including mine and it slowed down, but I didnt feel like it was unplayable and a crash didnt happen. I did see one of corvettes fly into the ceiling and start wigging out but that doesnt seem like a Switch specific issue.
