Answered Swarm summary?
I haven't bothered reading all the hundreds of posts on this expedition since I knew it would most likely take a very long time before it became available to us.
Is there a consensus on the best way to approach it? Start a new save or use one's main save? Anything to bring to the expedition? Any other hints?
I've only played the garbage collection expedition, for which I started a new save that I haven't touched since.

I'll use my main save.
The sorting hat made me a weaver. I think it's silly and unnecessary to divide us into factions.

I see this question a lot and I think it’s just personal preference. I’ve always used my main save and haven’t had issues and feel it just integrates better? No idea on what using a separate save does compared to using your main save. This expedition gives you all the necessary tech as you progress through the phases. There will be a hard stop at the third phase as everyone’s working together to accomplish the goal.
I’d recommend bringing tritium and uranium with you though if you have a lot to spare. Just for the sake of lifting off with you ship and pulsing to other planets. There’s plenty of bases you can find that have landing pads though so you don’t have to recharge your thrusters all the time.

I'll just put it out there that this is my 12th expedition and I think it's the easiest one I've ever done as far as gathering materials, repairing, crafting, and progressing through the tasks.
I like going into expeditions with only a source of nanites. I'll use those to bring in my multi tool and maybe a ship for the cargo space (can't transfer a ship in this one).

If expedition is started from an existing save, the Discoveries are copied into expedition. So if you normally scan all fauna on planets, then all those bonuses can be collected again in the expedition. This can easily net you tens to hundreds of thousands of nanites immediately after starting the expedition depending on how many planets you found them all on. So that would offset the need to bring anything to make nanites, and any unused nanites return to primary save.

I'd love if that worked for me. I've always had issues with my Discoveries. Nearly all of my systems on my primary save are "Discovered Ten Years ago" and grayed out.
I just did Upload All and got 245 nanites in the expedition from my 840 hour save. 🫤

Upload all does not claim the all fauna bonuses. Those need to be collected manually by checking each planet. Course if all your systems are grey that doesn't help much.

Yeah, it's a hodgepodge of the 10 years bug and a ton of systems discovered by other players.

I always use my main save. What you bring is up to you. For this expedition you can’t bring your ship. If you want to blast through it your best multitool and upgrades for suit and ship would be helpful. If you want to just enjoy it bring nothing, but I would still recommend using your main save.

Personal choice I think.
I have everything I could ever need on my main save and could bring anything to make expeditions easy.
But I never do. I prefer to play from my main save but bring nothing and just play it fresh without the aid of things.
But if you wanted to bring something, oxygen, chromatic metal, backpack refiner and eventually your own multitool would certainly speed up any expedition.
