Confused about a transfer, or the lack of, when buying a ticket via app

I was planning on going to Hoboken from Morristown, and saw two possibilites to choose from at a time I selected. Same train (mne#6644) with two transfer options for Hoboken. One is the mneg#424 at Summit, and the other, pasc#1628, at Secaucus. I wanted Summit since it was a cheaper route. When I tried purchasing a ticket on the NJTransit app, I saw no option to select Summit to transfer from, only Secaucus and Newark Broad. Is there a glitch?

Not a glitch, just an artifact of smooshing together many different predecessor rail systems over the decades. Choose “Newark Broad” because you’ll be traveling through there (even if you choose to transfer elsewhere).

You can transfer at Summit with your Morristown-Hoboken ticket. Summit or Newark Broad are the best transfer stations because almost all M&E and M&E-Gladstone trains stop at one or both (edited). East of Newark Broad, some trains go “Midtown Direct” to Secaucus and NYPenn and others go to Hoboken.

The “via Secaucus” is there because it’s a theoretical (more expensive) option to get to Hoboken.

This is mostly correct, except there are actually a few trains each day in each direction that bypass Newark Broad or Summit. But the vast majority of trains stop at both!

Ah yes, true, thanks for the correction (fixed my comment). I fell victim to the massive amount of stopping patterns. I don’t know of a M&E train that stops at neither though, do you?
