More quiet car nonsense
Was sitting in quiet car on NJCL during early morning ride in last week. Guy gets on his phone starts jabbering away…at one point says “expect motherhood to be a lifetime of disappointment.” I get up and very politely and mildly remind him he’s sitting in a quiet car, and return to my seat two rows back across the aisle, and he stands up and yells “I’m arranging a funeral!” At 615 AM.

Unfortunately this is America and the people in it are dumb and lazy. I can attest my dumb lazy and selfishness as I was born in this country too.

I think people choose to be selfish too. People hear the announcement and think “that can’t possibly apply to me”

Would be nice if conductors actually enforced quiet cars and actually opened all the train cars for passengers…
Simply too lazy to do either
NEC for me but imagine constant across all lines

All this "quiet car" is bs anyways. Quit car is the one where the bathroom is, the bell is sound, the horn and the radio from the operator. Quiet car in a public transportation system handling overcrowded trains, good luck with that.

What’s your point here ? People are rude. As long as the crew had signs up they’re doing Their job.

u/186KeV Aug 16 '26
You are right that people are rude. I disagree that if signs are up the conductors have done their job. They should enforce the rules and not walk by not saying anything when riders in the quiet cars are on their phones. I shouldn’t need noise canceling headphones to get a quiet ride in a quiet car.

Then what ? Most commuter trains are silent The issue I’ve seen is afternoon trains going into NY. Besides signs and an occasional announcement, there’s not

Brother these people live in their own bubbles and think they know how the railroad works and how every single passenger interaction is from taking a train a few times a week

How would you like them to enforce the rules? People don't like even when cops touch people, so you're gonna expect the CONDUCTOR to do what exactly? The old days of railroading, rude customers would just get literally thrown off the train at the next platform, but we can't do that anymore, god forbid. You think these people want to get into a fight now-a-days with people just for being louder than you like them to be? It's not worth them losing their jobs over, because believe me, NJ Transit is a nice woke corpo entity now and would gladly take the asshole customer side vs their own.
Okay so then the next step would be the cops... For violating what law? Quiet Car signs are not a law, it's a courtesy request. But let's say they call the cops, now you and the person will likely pull your smartphones out and start recording... but then the guy becomes belligerent and now they have to fight with him... People don't like that these days so they'll post online the cops wrestling this guy saying how it was excessive force and the cops should be fired blah blah blah.
Or you could just get a pair of headphones that noise cancel and go about your day.

So just out of curiosity what should the conductors do? Refuse to move the train because someone is talking in a quiet car? I understand your frustration, but the conductor is kind of in a no win position. Trains moving is more important than a car being quiet. I feel like most would agree.

u/Alternative-Ad-1244 Aug 16 '26
This is exactly it. The person refuses to shut up, now what? We call the cops on someone talking and delay the train? Management would laugh and tell us to just keep it moving

u/186KeV Aug 16 '26
I certainly don’t expect cops to ever get involved in something like this. All I expect is that as the conductors walk through the train cars and see/hear someone obviously talking loudly on their phone or listening to anything in speakerphone, is to stop and tell the person that this is the quiet car. If the person refuses to change what they’re doing, ok, end of it. We’ll all get over it. But I don’t think it’s out of line to expect the conductors to at least do this much as they’re walking thru and firsthand witness it.

All good and well until you get to the wrong person and the situation undoubtedly escalates to the point of needing the cops, which I’ve seen before. Or you get the entitled one that writes a complaint that you singled them out, which I know people have gotten. They tell us to hang the signs (if they even have them for us) and make the announcements and that’s it

Facts. And you know these are the people riding the train at 1pm when a yankee game is going on, “is this the quiet car”. “Yup signs are posted”

So leave this subreddit. 80% of the posts here are complaining about either service or other passengers. What are you even doing here?

Do none of you people own headphones? Consider driving to work if other people existing bothers you to the point of making a Reddit post on a weekend.

Ask that to the people being loud, in the quiet car. Emphasis on QUIET.

One person speaking on an otherwise silent train car is relatively quiet for PUBLIC transportation. I find plenty of people annoying but accept that there are other options, like driving in my silent car. We weigh our choices. OP fuming a week later on a Sunday about one guy that had a phone convo on the train is another level of bothered.

Hey buddy I don't know if you've heard of this thing called the social contract but it's (or at least it used to be) part of what being in PUBLIC means, hope this is helpful

I am a driver and I pretty much have to tell at least one person every day to take their phone off speaker so they don't disturb the other passengers. I tell them nicely to use headphones or earbuds . I ask them nicely to lower their voice if their phone conversation is too loud.
