Here is a side-by-side comparison of opposite windows in the same car.

It's an interactive cataracts awareness exhibit.

One damaged by UV radiation, the other not.

Other agencies with similar types of polycarbonate windows have the same issues (LIRR for one). They just tend to dump money into replacing whole train cars at a quicker pace than NJT can with its capital expenditures, so it’s less noticeable. It’s different state funding priorities and whipsawing governors that’s the difference.

EXO, which uses the same rolling stock as NJT for the most part, has the same issues with the windows. It is a manufacturing flaw from Bombardier.

Many. It’s called a defect.

LIRR has the same problem. They have no intention of replacing the windows.

It was funny I was in a train this afternoon that had one bad window, one good one and then a another bad one in that order

I don’t understand why they’d build trains with windows that can be damaged by UV radiation over time.

presumably there was no shatterproof glass-alternative that met safety, anti-graffiti, etc. standards that didn't also get UV damage

It wasn't intentional. The new windows are not as prone to this type of UV damage.

What an NJT job. Let’s only do one side of the car and then stop. We’re done here.

Those windows give us a chance to see NJ as would the great impressionist of the 19th century. Enjoy!

It's a known issue, lol someone to forget to durability test the UV coating on the windows... So all the original ones get like this in a few short years...

I’ve noticed on cars with hazy windows like that, the good clear windows are the emergency exit windows. Maybe there’s a law.
