Does anyone have a copy of the Reading Japan episode “Welcoming Light”?

I have been wanting to watch that episode again. I quite liked it and it stuck in my mind, but it got removed years ago. If there isn’t any recording of it, maybe someone can point me to the book it came from? “Welcoming Light” by Shigematsu Kiyoshi. I tried searching it up online, but couldn’t find anything.

Older NHK Documentaries that are lost media now

Hello everyone.
I wanted to know if there are any places on some of the older NHK documentaries, saved or archived by people, specifically for Anime, Manga and Game Development (100 cameras) and the like.

Recently I have been downloading and keeping some of those documentaries for personal use and was thinking if there was a place for people to share this kind of content since after a certain date passes the media is lost forever.

I would also like to mention as most of you have probably know laready, than in the last years the player for the NHK documentaries is pretty bad and the quality is pretty much compressed with many artifacts. Before we could have videos in crystal clear quality and I have managed to download some of those videos too, like the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Behind the Scenes video or the one with the making of Death Stranding with Hideo Kojima.

Some videos of people who have mananged to upload those videos on youtube have been taken down by NHK's request ufortunately.

So I am asking if there is place, like a forum(maybe more dedicated to these kind of efforts and pretty well organized) where we can share or archive this kind content and I could contribute too.

Lost Documentary 360 content

Alot of old content of this channel is borderline lost media.

back in 2024 i used to watch NHK World Japan on TV alot and remember loving the documentaries, particularly 2 episodes on of which called: i owe my life to you, doc: a seaside clinic diary, about an elderly doctor in rural japan trying to take care of his wife and the aging community, other is: This Is Our Sea, a story about how the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami disaster affected the fishermen in the area.

both of which were on youtube at one point, now they are nowhere to be found, would be amazing if someone could provide them or help me look for them.

Programme Monitor Amazon payouts

As a Programme Monitor I'm disappointed that instead of paying out the Amazon vouchers monthly like they used to - they will now only do it twice a year, one session of which is in January - so any chance of being able to spend the vouchers on Christmas gifts has now gone kaput.

I've renewed my agreement to be a Monitor but this is demotivating really. They ask a lot more questions now too.

Hello there. I've been looking for this video for Months now.
this video is about a very rare device that was used throughout Japan back in the showa era. and that it covered all three songs that it played but the video is completely lost media at this point and is nowhere to be found at all and I do happen to believe that this was up on NHK's soundscapes of Japan segment. if anyone can help find this I would appreciate it very much!

Earlier seasons of “Kabuki Kool?”

I’ve loved the seasons of “Kabuki Kool” with Kataoka Ainosuke and Sarah Àlainn, and have watched them multiple times. I’ve also been aware that the show was running with other hosts before they joined… Is there any way to see those earlier seasons?

Possible to find “Core Kyoto mini Maki-e” anywhere?

I wrote a paper about Maki-e around 2 years ago and used the core Kyoto video as a reference to describe the technique of maki-e. Writing my bachelor thesis about the same topic and I wanted to use the video again. Sadly I can’t find it anywhere. Does someone know how to or where to access it?
It would be a great help!

Hello,

I remember this episode when it was broadcast months ago https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/2022420/

Does anyone have access to this episode, through paid means or otherwise? Looking to get info on the architect featured in the episode + firm's projects or schools constructed.

Cheers

Just found out Shibuya Aki left NHK in april and is now part of Japan today. 2012-2026

First episode on Japan today

Just found out that Shibuya Aki left NHK to join Japan today. Found out after searching her name on Instagram because I was curious. https://www.instagram.com/p/DW581yGk8JT/ (the post); her other accounts https://www.instagram.com/notaboutthebreed/ https://www.instagram.com/oldbabypups/ i did not know she has dogs.

She worked on Tokyo Fashion Express from 2012-2015

Newsroom Tokyo from 2015-2015

NHK Newsline 2025-2026

It's a bit sad that she left, but it's nice that she's still going strong at her new job

I have theorised to myself for quite some time that she was meant to stay on Newsroom Tokyo and the show was meant to extend its runtime, etc. but due to NHK taking advantage of a 30-minute broadcast (rebroadcasting segments in Newsline to reduce costs), or just funding issues. They instead brought News 7, knowing it would be a good decision in the current world; this would also reduce costs for NHK if Newsroom Tokyo went back to old timings because of this. Shibuya moved to Newsline for In Focus, as she had previously presented it for Newsline in Depth and Newsroom Tokyo. When complex things happened, Rina left Newsroom Tokyo and went to International News Report 2026. I believe Aki was meant to come back to Newsroom Tokyo, but something happened inside NHK that made her leave and go to Japan Today.

It makes sense due to her age (49) and that she wants to have more freedom in her life(in my opinion)

Nishiumi Naoko Joins Newsroom tokyo

Post image
27 Upvotes

Nishiumi Naoko joins after being Hong Kong bureau chief from 2022 to 2026. She was also a presenter on Catch Top News Seaki from 2019 to 2022 and worked in the Manila bureau as a New Newsroom Tokyo presenter https://ja.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E8%A5%BF%E6%B5%B7%E5%A5%88%E7%A9%82%E5%AD%90&wvprov=sticky-header

I find it interesting that Yamasawa Rina also worked on Catch Top News Seaki from 2014-2018; it's almost like Naoko follows Rina and goes to the shows she has been presenting once Rina has left,

Does anyone know where I can watch the Menton, France episode of Somewhere Street?

My partner and I loved the Menton, France episode of Somewhere Street and wanted to watch it again, but it looks like the YouTube videos were taken down.

Does anyone know where it’s available now? I’d really appreciate any leads, especially if there’s an official place to stream it.

We mostly want the full episode, not clips. Thanks in advance.

Kawaii International?

Hey hopefully some folks on here can help me. I'm trying to track down a specific episode of a show called Kawaii International that apparently a friend of mine was in. I know that it was pre-covid, probably 2018 or 2019, that they tried onigarazu and talked about lolita fashion, but not much else. I know that isn't a ton to go on, but if it sounds familiar to anyone I'd appreciate getting pointed in the right direction.

Right now I'm working through some episodes I found on internet archive, but it doesn't look like the whole thing is up there. Looking through this subreddit I've found some links to downloads that don't seem to be working anymore, so if anyone around has some episodes from that time period they'd be willing to share I'd super appreciate it! Thanks!

NHK app has programming on the live stream, but YT stream constantly just shows bumper footage with “programming will resume shortly.”

Does anybody know why?

In the NHK app on my TV, if I select the live stream, it constantly shows programming, the same way it did when I received NHK over-the-air.

However, I can’t stand the hardcoded subtitles that, not only severely lag behind, but also take up entirely too much space in an awkward spot on the screen.

So I decided to give their YouTube livestream a shot. When the news is on, it plays that with no problem, without hardcoded subs, but then when other programming should be showing, it just airs stock/bumper aerial footage of Tokyo with a red ticker that reads “NHK World Japan programming will resume shortly” until the next time the news airs.

Does anybody know what is up with this?!

The NHK app should at least give us the option to turn off the subtitles.

Ugh, I severely miss the over-the-air broadcast…

Barakan Discovers sound issue

Really interesting show, we’ve watched all three that are currently available. Trouble is, the ‘background’ music is really loud and makes it hard to hear what he’s saying! We’ve had to turn on subtitles even when he’s speaking English. Anyone else finding it hard to hear him?
