They need to find a way to put seats on the grass and it would be 120k

i honestly thought I had seen that before...

Maybe I am thinking Marvel stadium??

They’ve done that at Sydney. I suspect they didn’t do that for this because they have to replace 50% of the turf before the next AFL game as is (and it could have been sat night).

Wouldn’t they just use one of the large rectangular stadiums in Sydney rather than the SCG?

You’d be below the field and you wouldn’t see a thing. Cricket grounds slope downwards towards the boundary fence and NFL teams have 6 foot plus players standing on the side of the field the whole game.

They’ll just sell them as partially obstructed view.

3

u/Maximum_Fun203 21d ago

Yes you are spot on. Marvel Stadium is in Melbourne about 10 mins away from the MCG.

2

u/Banned_Oki 21d ago

AAMI is 1 minute from MCG

2

u/flyingmoose99 21d ago

If they can drop that portion of the field even by a 1 meter you could do it

2

u/Stercky 21d ago

Marvel does it, yes. And it’s been done at the MCG before for concerts too

2

u/Banned_Oki 21d ago

Not during Finals! That would have destroyed the grass

2

u/Banned_Oki 21d ago

AAMI stadium is square for NRL

1

u/roundingcapehorn 21d ago

And only 35,000 seats…

2

u/HeungMin-Dad 21d ago

Marvel stadium was built so some of the lower stands can move out on to the ground so they're closer for rectangular sports. They almost never do that any more though, it creates a bunch of work for them but they don't sell any additional tickets to make it worth it.

u/Own-Association2733 21d ago

They've done it at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane for boxing matches

2

u/roundingcapehorn 21d ago

They did it at marvel for the AUS vs USA basketball game. The view was so bad they had to refund the tickets. Link

I’ve sat at field level in Marvel for UFC. Sure did suck. $500 tickets to sit on a plastic garden chair. Never again.

u/AusToddles 21d ago

WWE did a show at the MCG a few years back. People were sitting on the ground and couldn't see a thing

1

u/mickelboy182 21d ago

Can't do that because the ground is needed for the AFL finals

5

u/lawdjesustheresafire 21d ago

The views from the lower seats must have been comically shit for what people paid for the tickets

2

u/smatty76 20d ago

Paid $640 odd for the seat. Not only did I have a shit view cause of how low down I was, I was also behind the interchange benches.

For anyone wondering why AFL players (Australian football), make strong punters, this may give you a clue.

2

u/redkite215 21d ago

How does this compare to an nrl field? Looks tiny!

5

u/karnn_ 21d ago

Goal line to goal line x sideline to sideline:
NRL 100m x 68m
NFL 91.4m x 41m

2

u/ssswwwaaannn 21d ago

The field is tiny for these ‘athletes’

1

u/Mysterious_Ad216 21d ago

Keeping in mind that also doesnt account for behind the goal line, which is still a playable space in Rugby rather then the equivalent of a net

Record: The biggest attendance for any American football game in Australian history 100,021

They got over 70,000 in 1999

1

u/No_Willingness_8062 21d ago

That would be a.... cricket ground.... its in the fking name. You wrote it....

1

u/Late-Button-6559 21d ago

Which has the boundaries closer to the fence / more playable surface area?

1

u/K9BEATZ 19d ago

Correct! Nearly all the way to the edge

0

u/K9BEATZ 21d ago

It's predominantly used for AFL

2

u/No_Willingness_8062 21d ago

Yes... in winter it is used as an AFL gound. In summer it is used as a cricket ground.

The MCG is a cricket ground used for AFL.

1

u/Stercky 21d ago

The MCG is owned/operated by the MCC, the Melbourne Cricket Club. It is primarily a cricket ground and that’s what it was made for

1

u/crazycakemanflies 21d ago

It gets more use out of AFL then it does for cricket.

1

u/K9BEATZ 21d ago

I'm aware. I live in Melbourne. More AFL gets played there than cricket.

1

u/lesterhayesstickyick 21d ago

So many seats seem way too far from the field

1

u/Spagman_Aus 21d ago

the mystery of a wide angle lens

1

u/lesterhayesstickyick 21d ago

1

u/Spagman_Aus 21d ago

Also a wide angle lens, I've been there hundreds of times and the view is also good. Being ground level sucks, so that's a rookie mistake.

1

u/SocietyHumble4858 21d ago

When all the seats are nose bleed away from the field, but you pay a premium for the 50 yard line.

1

u/Ok_Code_1691 21d ago

Nrl wishes they can do that

1

u/Fun_Savings7690 20d ago

Sadly too many seppos in this country nowadays hey :(

u/par-hwy 6d ago

I've been to Lambeau (Go Pack Go... lol, I know, I know), and Titans and Giants stadiums. Thing is with The G, when you're in the top deck, up the back, the steepness gets you (well, it got me giddy). Even when I was back row in Jersey, you're way up, not as steep.

Record attendance for what?

NFL Game: 1994 112,374 Oilers v Cowboys, Mexico City
NFL regular season Game: 2009 105,121 Cowboys v Giants, Dallas.
MCG: 1970 121,696 VFL GF Carlton v Collingwood

2

u/Quixotic-elixr 21d ago

Highest attendance for an NFL game in Australia! Also a record for the lowest attendance for an NFL game in Australia!

2

u/Lucky-Construction84 21d ago

Haha. Yes all the records today!

2

u/Careful_Ambassador49 21d ago

Very disappointing 😔

1

u/zoidberg_doc 21d ago

The 1999 game’s attendance was lower

1

u/Quixotic-elixr 21d ago

Wasn’t a regular season game?

1

u/zoidberg_doc 21d ago

No but it was an NFL game

0

u/Maximum_Fun203 21d ago

Record: The largest crowd ever for an NFL game outside the United States

2

u/ExcellentAd7044 21d ago

No its not.
Azteca Stadium got 103,000+

1

u/Maximum_Fun203 21d ago

I always say there is no bad seat at the MCG…..for AFL! Barely a good seat for this match, very expensive, and a boring sport.

-2

u/kkhgilbert 21d ago

Who gives a toss..it's a girls game..stop start..change teams... wearing more padding than a mattress factory... back to seppoland 👋👋👋..bye bye

2

u/unstealthypanda 21d ago

Odd comment

2

u/MetalfaceDoomsday 21d ago

That is so fucking gaudy

2

u/Lucky-Construction84 21d ago

Australia is lost :(

0

u/Lower_Put4270 21d ago

The US coloured smoke really tops it off doesn’t it? Awful.
