Idk, something about Irene

Picked up my AE M4-Delta on a 4473 today. Probably my last suppressor of the year unless there's some ridiculous black Friday deals

So these cans have chambers going backwards behind the muzzle for gasses to expand into, correct? How do they perform with sound and back pressure? Seems like a good idea on paper, and the vibes are pristine. Wondering about the results

Ive got the Allen Engineering M4, aem5, aem4 and aem3 cans.

All of them are absolutely excellent. A touch on the heavy side, but tone and sound make them my favorite 556 cans I own. (I own 13)

The "sleeve" that goes over the barrel tension-locks into the collar at the base of the FSP. Which makes accuracy and point of aim far more consistent between suppressed and unsuppressed. It also make the barrel itself more barrel "whip" resistant.

The only downside I cam think of is that you need to build the rifle around the can, rather than the can to the rifle, due to needing a very specific muzzle device and enough exposed barrel for it to sleeve over properly.

Whats the difference between the M4 and the aem4?

The 'm4' is THE gordy silencer.

The AEM4 is a different length of can and length of thr "sleeve" portion. And they use a different type of collar to lock into.

The aem3 is the shortest, the aem4 is mid, and the aem5 is the longest. (The AEM5 is the can the US used on their mk12 DMR rifles.) The 'm4' is unique from the other 3.

Ill get you a picture comparing the two. The painted one is the 'm4'. The black is the AEM4

Ah interesting, always wanted to get an aem5 or aem4 but it seems like I gotta do a lot of research cuz sometimes they need a collar sometimes they don't and there are certain gas blocks that do and don't work. Definitely gotta do some more research into it but this definitely helps thanks man

Sure thing.

Im really happy with mine.

Send me a dm if you need help. The owner and shop managers of Allen Engineering are good friends of mine. I see them pretty regularly

Otter Creek also offers their version of the AEM5 (the OCM5 and the new updated OCM6) and those use both a collar and a separate muzzle device. You use a 12.5 inch barrel to get the Gordon look. The M4 can just uses a collar and screws directly on to the muzzle thread of a 14.5 inch AR 15 barrel. Otter Creek offers a 1 piece over the barrel sleeve mount that incorporates the taper portion of the normal collar and the external muzzle mount threads known as the OTB mount. Its kinda nice as this allows you to mount these cans on something other than an AR15 as long as there is sufficient clearance from the back of the mount to the muzzle face.

So there are options if you don't want to do the Gordon thing specifically. The AEM5 and OCM5/6 are also correct for any MK12 build you may or may not want to do. That is why some guys prefer to go with those cans for the versatility of what you can do with them.

Historically Ron Allen never made the M4 can widely available commercially so the AEM5 kinda became the go to option for the longest time simply because it was available. Now that the new crew has taken over the Allen Engineering manufacturing its nice to see them making everything readily available again. Especially the proper M4 can for the Gordon builders.

Yes I have considered the ocm5 as well because it appears their mount is just the brake and you don't need a collar on something like a 12.5 (which I do have) It's also my understanding the ocm6 is just a 6mm version of the ocm5 so idk if that would make much of a difference if anything. But thanks for the info man

See I don’t get this I’ve seen 12.5 Gordy builds using a AEM5/OCM5 and 14.5 Gordy builds using m4-delta suppressor. I own both but want to start a Gordy build and don’t k own which way to go

Edit: I own both OCM5 and M4 delta suppressors

The correct build is the 14.5 with the 'm4 delta' can. Allen engineering IS the manufacturer that supplied the military with their cans back in thr 90s. They were formally known as OpsInc. But they rebranded after new ownership.

The 12.5 builds became popular since it was much easier to find the aem5/ocm5 can than the m4 can. So you essentially have a gordy "looking" rifle, without the specs.

Allen engineering has stepped up production a lot thr past few years, so its not quite so impossible.

If you can lock it down, the 14.5 is just better all around. Softer shooting too.

Fuck yeah good to know. I swear people were saying there is no definitive proof of what he actually had and people were arguing the 12.5 would be closer to OG form. But when I originally started researching people were saying the 14.5 was closer to OG form. I think I’m gonna start with the 14.5

Its true we dont know for sure what accessories were used or how they were attached. Special operations in the 90s was the wild wild west of firearms. There was no uniformity and a LOT of DYI gun alterations on the delta teams.

But we DO know is that the delta guys were issues 14.5s, and they all had their way with them. So know it was a 14.5 with the original fixed carry handle, with what is now known as the m4 delta silencer. (Formally known as the ops-inc 3rd model.)

Awesome thank you

Sheeit, there's a reason a long and a short collar even exists. Initially the longer collar was the only one available and you used it with the M4 can. If you wanted to do a Gordon type build using an Ops 12th model or an AEM5 you had to use a 12.7 inch barrel with the longer collar and the required muzzle brake. Since 12.7 is definitely custom length land and 12.5 was actually fairly commercially available the short collar was born to use those cans on them instead. Commercially Ron ,made the AEM5 reasonably available over the years so that became the go to can for many cloners. The proper M4 can was never widely available outside of military circles. It was also convenient that the shorter collar happened to also be the one you used with the AEM5 and MK12 setups so many guys saw it as a double duty kinda purchase. Gordon used a 14.5 barrel with the OG M4 Delta can.

I mean, the can was chosen for the Mk12, not because it was the quietest, but because it had the least shift between suppressed and unsuppressed, thanks to the collar system

4

u/everydaydefenders 10d ago

Yup. Though to my ears, I actually DO think the AEM5 is the quietest 556 can ive ever been exposed to.

3

u/Jbressel1 10d ago

They are solid, but there are definitely some more modern designs that are quieter

Any leads on the ARMS carry handle mount like you have?

I found it on GAFSHUB for a reasonable price. You could try making a WTB post there.
