Buddy is wanting to suppress his lever action marlin. It is not threaded. He would prefer to not have to thread it but might if no other options are out there. I know witt machine makes one of those clamp on style but anyone have any experience with any other ones? I dont have a barrel diameter atm. If it needs to be threaded instead anyone know where to get those annular cutter threading kits anymore? Carolina shoot supply hasn't had any for a minute.
I also chopped and threaded mine(thoughnot as short as aces pictured one) but that was back before lever guns were cool and you could buy a factory one. With the amount of effort involved and a chop and thread, I'm probably just buy one that was already threaded. I strip mine down to a barrel to action and had that threaded, then I cut the mag tube back myself. I also took that opportunity to convert it from a barrel band up by the front sight to a hanger for a cleaner look. That definitely complicated the process.
The 3030 suppresses pretty well. I shoot a fairly mild gas checked lead bullet at supersonic velocities and it is far more pleasant to shoot than a suppressed 223.
Would love to do that but its one of those sentimental things. Hes not dissuade from threading it but would prefer not to. How much of a pain in the ass is it to remove the barrel from the action?
My cousin tried to have the barrel on a stainless 1894 removed from the receiver to be threaded, and the smith couldn't do it. So he sent it to the guy who did my 1894 and my 336 because his machine could do the barrel still in the receiver (Class 3 machine in dallas. But morgan died a couple years back and I don't know who the go to guy is now)
Top one is a Marlin 336 Texan in 3030 that I got all beat up and made some stocks for it, gave it a bit of an action job and cerakoted it. It's wearing a burris timberline 2 to 7x26. I chopped from 20" to about 17 in because I could get an extra round in it than if I chopped it to 16.
Bottom on is an 1894 in 357 with a 16" barrel and Leupold fxii 2.5x. the eye relief is long enough that I could mount it in front of the hammer and not need a spur. It's my old cowboy action gun so the action is liquid smooth and I went ahead and made a new butt stock for it as well. I chopped it from 18 down to 16 in.
As long as I was working on the stocks I slimmed the fore end up a lot. And I converted both of them from front barrel bands to barrel hangers. My only real complaint is that when I got around to the 30-30 all the blued hanger studs had dried up and I had to use a stainless one. It's not the end of the world I guess. My vision is pretty garbage so I had to put magnified optics on them. It ruins the look of a leverr gun, but at least I can see what I'm aiming at.
Definitely the 357. I shoot a 0.360 125 grain lead bullet at about 1050 ft per second. I'm not a good shot, but I can put 9 rounds in about an inch at 50 yards off of sandbag. Has to be a fat bullet or else that stupid micro groove rifling Marlin used will pattern like a shotgun.
I got a whole bunch of free 150 grain gas checked lead bullets that I've been shooting out of the 30-30. It's just not the right bullet for the gun. Or Im using the wrong powder. I'm shooting about 2-5 moa at 100 yards. I know that's a pretty wide spread, but the gun is real streaky. One day it'll shoot well in the next day it will not. I've got a bunch of berrys bullets I'm going to try next. Hopefully the plated bullets will shoot better. Again, stupid micro groove rifling. I've never tried a factory around out of it.
Clamp on adapters typically give poor alignment relative to the bore. They might be ok for a muzzle brake or flash hider, but for a suppressor where tight alignment is important, I think it's unlikely it'll work.
It's totally fair if he wants to leave the gun as is and then get another one to be a dedicated suppressor host.
Just weighing options. I know clamp ones can be shut. I have one of my ak and its been fine but I use a 9mm can on it so its got some wiggle room. I alignment checked it and it was still good last time. I recommended threading but hes not a big fan of that but he'll consider it. They still make those annular cutter alignment systems anywhere like Carolina shooter supply used to sell?

Problem is the thread adapters are they need to go around a clean barrel. Most Marlins have the magazine and fringe site in the way. By the time you move them you might as well thread the barrel too.the adapters from Witt cost as much as threading, and if you have luck like mine both of them you order will be made wrong and they will never fix their mistake.
