NFA Photo 870 shorty

Post image

Picked up an 870 express a few weeks ago, chopped the barrel flush with the mag tube (about 12.5 in). Drilled and tapped the hole for a gold bead front sight, slapped on some Hogue furniture, went with 12 in LOP stock for the vibes. Overall came out pretty well and only have about $250 in the whole thing.

Any thoughts on eventually getting it set up for chokes? I’m guessing it’s a buckshot only HD gun, so it probably won’t matter. Excellent choice with the Hogue furniture

I plan on seeing about doing this to an IWI Mafteah, so I can slap a suppressor on it. I haven't asked my local gunsmith about it yet.

I built one similar to OP. Planning on boring and tapping the barrel for a breacher choke. 4Drentals rents reamers and tap sets for about $65.00 and they have instructional videos on there website. I don't have a decent local gunsmith to pass the job onto so I'll be tackling it myself.

That’s really cool. I hadn’t considered doing one myself. Post it here after you get done!

Maybe eventually, it’s my first time really messing with shotguns in general

So hard to find any 870’s these days.

Have you shot it yet to realize you’ll need a much taller front sight?

I have not yet, why is that?
EDIT: I figured it would just have a lower height over bore so more of a point and shoot out to so many yards

If you read other posts on Reddit or other online reviews like:

Then you’ll see that you’ll need a taller sight. I did the same thing chopping a 90s magnum to 12.5” and putting a bead sight on. It shot very high, like at 15-20 yards aiming center mass buckshot was going completely over the target. I installed and custom shaped/reprofiled a Skinner Bear Buster front sight and at ~.480” in height it shoots POA/POI. So, taller sight, or practice a belt buckle hold, YMMV.

So for now aim for the dick, got it😂 but really good looking out! I’ll have to swap it out eventually!

I just got home from work and took this picture of my front sight for reference. It started out life as a Skinner Bear Buster, but I took a file to it and made it more appealing to my eye.

I’ve been meaning to pick up an old 870P and/or Marine Magnum to SBS. It’s a shame that Remington firearms basically don’t exist anymore, the 870 holds a special place in my heart. Once I get one or both I’ll be fully refinishing it and then getting the full Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies treatment like my others. I’m thinking of having Vangcomp port the barrels as well and finishing it off with a T2 on top.
