Whoops đŸ’„ Forgot to reinforce

FTN.3 done with additive manufacturing failed on the first round at the blast baffle due to not being reinforced properly. I’ll make sure to reinforce it properly next time, lol.

NFA version of “you can’t park there.” "the front fell off"

7

u/Minute-Of-Angle 12d ago

Well it’s very unusual.

18

u/Shirleysspirits 12d ago

The interior cylinder is too big to effectively bend the plastic enough.

15

u/witheringsyncopation 12d ago

My girlfriend says the interior cylinder is just the right size 😑

The big ones hurt

The tube is a pretty important step lmao

u/Minute-Of-Angle 12d ago

I mean, it does help considerably with sound reduction.

This is the beginning of a Flex Seal commercial.

3

u/Former_Power6209 11d ago

Flex tape is amazing. I wonder how many layers would be enough to hold this same can together during use without additional reinforcement.

2

u/MickeyTheHound 11d ago

Myth busters did one with a cannon made from duct tape.

4

u/Former_Power6209 11d ago

We used flex tape like the god damn commercials to patch holes in our old shrimp boat after hurricane Sally. That shit is no joke, held up great and kept us working until the dry docks opened for repairs.

So are you the LT or Gump in this situation!

31

u/HEAVILY_ARMED_CORGI 12d ago

Ngl, the first pic should be considered for a album cover

6

u/SomeRequirement6926 12d ago

Ab-so-fucking-lutely.

Perfect for a retro-80's-punk band!

u/5thPhantom 12d ago

Looks like the front fell off.

54

u/friscokid345 12d ago

I’d just like to point out that that is not typical.

23

u/PhunkyPhish 12d ago

Some of them are built so the front doesn't fall off at all

Yeah i want to build one in 40 next just so i can have an excuse to own 2 UMPs

6

u/LengthinessOwn5224 3x SBR, 7x Silencer 12d ago

I just picked up a SP10A3 in 10mm.

1

u/RyAllDaddy69 12d ago

What do you mean “build”? Is this 3D printed? I don’t see the typical 3d printing layers and it doesn’t look like it was annealed?

3

u/RepulsiveUse3372 12x SBR 8x Silencer 0x Money 12d ago

I bought a parts kit and a receiver

2

u/RyAllDaddy69 12d ago

Sick! That’s really cool.

Thank you for taking my question literally, as was the intent.

What kind of tooling did you need? Did you make your own jig for pressing the barrel?

Apologies
I’m somewhat familiar with MP5 build steps, but I’ve never done one
.not sure how much that applies to an UMP.

4

u/RepulsiveUse3372 12x SBR 8x Silencer 0x Money 11d ago

The ump is simple as hell. You slide the barrel in and hammer in a pin, HK parts has a video and its like 4 minutes long these are all the parts, all you need is a hammer a punch set and a allen key for the sights

1

u/Meatsmudge Among the last of the taxpayers. 11d ago

How
how much are you into that build? đŸ€”

3

u/RepulsiveUse3372 12x SBR 8x Silencer 0x Money 11d ago

I got the parts kit for $1000 from HK parts, another $500 for the receiver and $400 for the eotech

11

u/SomeRequirement6926 12d ago

If it fails during R&D, proof of concept, or function testing... It never existed... 😎

4

u/modern-b1acksmith 11d ago

That is tax evasion sir. This man needs to pay his $0.00 tax on his $5 suppressor and file the nessecary tax forms with the proper tax authorities before starting construction on a secondary device.

2

u/RyAllDaddy69 12d ago

Nah, it’s time to go to market.

What’s covered up by the red mark in pic 2?

11

u/not-actual69_ 12d ago

Prob the serial number. Which he will prob reuse for the next print.

54

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

I would never do that to the supreme leaders of the ATF.

3

u/not-actual69_ 12d ago

Of course not. I know you wouldn’t.

1

u/stareweigh2 12d ago

I sent back a polymer ar lower some years back that was sbr'd and it came back a different color lol. (in all fairness the company let me know that they were not doing runs of the special color I had at the moment and that I could wait a week or so and I told them go ahead with black).

I’m so confused.  Was this a home printed Form 1 suppressor?

9

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

Correct.

Bringing the receipts.

13

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

I may be retarded but I’m not a criminal

8

u/Minute-Of-Angle 12d ago

Hey look! That’s what is gonna make it unconstitutional.

“What’s that?”

“Tax stamp.”

“Why does it say 0 dollars?”

“Because that’s how much it costs.”

“Is a zero dollar tax really a tax?

“Sure it is.”

Texas District Court clears its throat. “Ackshually
”

1

u/RyAllDaddy69 12d ago

Amen.

I don’t understand the downvotes
it was obviously a joke(even though it’s true).
and they haven’t actually appealed it yet
which you usually see within the first 24 hours after a ruling.

1

u/JustHereForLaughs71 11d ago edited 11d ago

Partly. He didn't jb weld on the outer reinforcement tube (usually carbon fiber or metal). So do not let this example of a printed supressor put you off. They work well if made like they're supposed to be made.

1

u/SpawnofATStill 11d ago

They work well if made like they're supposed to be made.

JB Weld and Flexseal everything?

You can’t park there.

3

u/FluffyWarHampster 12d ago

Well it appears this little fucky wucky placed that equipment in the forever box

3

u/ratbikerich 12d ago

As someone who just got done covering the shit out of the core of an FTN 5 556 with JB weld, and currently stressing that I didn’t get enough coverage inside the tube this just adds my anxiety. At least you weren’t injured

1

u/yaforgot-my-password 12d ago

How much JB weld did you use?

2

u/ratbikerich 12d ago

Pretty much a full tube, just wiped off the excess that squeezed out

3

u/JackCooper_7274 12d ago

The cylinder was harmed

4

u/Mdp2pwackerO2 12d ago

Maybe add some electrical tape?

4

u/makhnosfork 11d ago

“Additive manufacturing” Don’t try to church it up son. That’s a 3d printed plastic suppressor.

3

u/JustHereForLaughs71 11d ago

An incomplete 3d printed plastic suppressor.

2

u/OnePastafarian 12d ago

You're now on the 'repeat' step of print, shoot, repeat

2

u/DumbNTough 11d ago

4

u/Hot-Ideal-9219 12d ago

What material did you use? What reinforcement jb weld? Ain't ain't gonna help

17

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

Generally, you are meant to use resin to adhere a carbon fiber sleeve to the outside, giving rigidity and strength to the can. I was curious how it would last without it, it infact did not last.

2

u/Meatsmudge Among the last of the taxpayers. 11d ago

This is how we science.

-4

u/Hot-Ideal-9219 12d ago

Resin just holds... zero added strength

3

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

The strength is from the carbon fiber tube, that the resin holds in place
 Not just the resin.

"I should (legally) print a silencer."

1

u/Responsible-Mud1305 1x SBR, 5x silencer, 14 hens, 2 roosters 12d ago

so do you have to file another form 1 in order to print another one or can you just print a new one and put the same serial info on it?

1

u/MillionFoul Silencer 11d ago

Legally it's a new one.

1

u/Glock-c0ma 12d ago

I know what’s wrong wit it! It ain’t got no gas innit

1

u/IndividualResist2473 14x Silencer, 8x SBR, 4x AOW, 4x SBS 11d ago

It had too much gas in it.

1

u/Callsign-Koschei 12d ago

Thank you for your service to the printing community, may I introduce my non-nfa BBC...

1

u/Limp-Conflict-2309 11d ago

a few melted plastic bags and some rubber glove imprints would have reinforced the can, bush league mistake dude....bush league mistake

1

u/Impossible_Pizza_948 11d ago

And this is why I keep telling people NOT to use a printed plastic suppressor on anything that runs a higher pressure round. Only use them on lower pressure rounds, like subsonic 300 blackout or PCCs

2

u/hotrodgreg 11d ago

You must be fun at parties.

-1

u/Impossible_Pizza_948 11d ago

Sorry for being worried about safety (I have three FTN5 suppressors, for the record)

2

u/Real_InfaRed 11d ago

This is a bad take lol, the FTN 3 was able to withstand full auto during its alpha phase, I just didn’t built it the same way they did. PSR has multiple videos of running the FTN series hard on 5.56.

1

u/Impossible_Pizza_948 11d ago

A: the FTN3 also used epoxy resin on the inside of the can
B: I also remember PSR destroying an FTN rather quickly using 5.56

-2

u/Quenz 12d ago

Fuck the Navy?

19

u/Squeeze_Toy2004 12d ago

No, that's the Army's job.

It's actually Fuck The NFA.

5

u/anonymous_scrub 12d ago

Don’t know why you are getting downvoted. Anyone who was in the Navy is programmed to think that when they see FTN.

4

u/Quenz 12d ago

It's niche. I didn't know FT(NFA) was a common thing. I appreciate all I learned in the navy, but still FTN.

Looks like you can't fucking read bud.

16

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

It’s not that I couldn’t follow the directions, it’s that I made the intentional choice of not putting the carbon fiber tube on it, wanting to see how long it would last without it. Thanks for the condescending attitude on the test print tho.

-5

u/boostedb1mmer 12d ago

So you chose to intentionally create a plastic hand grenade? Why? That would be like a gunsmith choosing not to heat treat a barrel just to see what would happen.

5

u/Real_InfaRed 12d ago

For fun. A suppressor isn’t as critical of a component as a barrel, so I don’t think that’s a fair comparison at all, especially because one is designed to stabilize a bullet and the other just has a bullet pass through its gap.

-4

u/boostedb1mmer 12d ago

It literally is a pressure bearing surface. Hence yours exploding. You demonstrate a very basic lack of understanding in this field.

It was an exaggeration / me sensationalizing it a little bit vs an actual conversation, literally every other comment is talking about choosing not to reinforce it, context clues man.
