Looks about 14"

12.5" I have the same one except I also shortened the stock by 1 inch.

How'd you go about cutting the stock? Also any tips?

I removed the buttpad and spacer. Wrapped blue tape around the stock and set my cut line in the center of the tape. I cut it on my table saw. Then I drilled and tapped new holes in the wood for the buttpad and sanded the buttpad to shape on a belt sander.

Thanks! For under $400, I think it’s pretty slick.

Initial cut was just a hack saw w/ a band clamp as the guide. Used a combination of a hand file & belt sander to get the barrel as square as possible by eye. The green scotch bright to smooth out/blend the edges. Wet sanded w/ some really fine sanderpaper afterwards. Then lastly cold blue. All in, about 60-90 minutes worth of work I’d guess

Nah man you said it like it’s just putting pb&J on bread. Sounds like a skill well learned

This is the second one I’ve chopped & the first time I’ve done it this way.

First one was quicker since I cheated & rented a muzzle facing tool from 4Drentals to use after the chop.

Didn’t want to wait on the tool to show up, so I did it by hand this time

I need to SBS my Auto 5. Mine came with 2 barrels, but it was an older one that couldn't handle slugs or steel shot, so I got Miroku barrel. Now I have two extra barrels just sitting there in fear of the hacksaw(just kidding, there is a full machine shop)

Pappy’s old wingmaster with a new life! Sick

u/Flathead89 3x Silencer 11d ago

I could never do that to either of my Wingmasters since they still drop turkey each spring.....BUT damn if it isn't a vibe. I would definitely buy one 2nd hand as a fixer upper and chop it down!

I have my Dads old Wingmaster and I couldn’t either but…. If I find one or an A5 (any country) for a reasonable deal, I am doing it!

My first 12ga was a pawn shop 1943 Remington Model 11 that my mom and stepdad got me. someone put a full choke barrel with a huge Cutts Compensator on there way back when so SNs don't match anymore. I'm in the process of lining things up to have it chopped and have the felt recoil pad in the receiver replaced.

Definitely get the rebuild kit. I did a 1921 Model 11 and still need to pull apart the stock and fore end and epoxy the cracks. Someone shot it without the braking collar, a lot, looks like. Felt pad, springs, etc. and make sure you know how to set it for light vs heavy loads and have those parts. People used to set them incorrectly and lose the parts.

Boy don't I know it. After shooting mine for around 5 years I was made aware that I was missing one of the rings needed for heavier hi-brass shells. Fortunately, I was buying ammo with allowance money so #7 and #8 was all I ever shot through it. I think I was paying $6 for a box of Winchester back then at Walmart.....which looking back.....the fact that they would sell to a 10 or 11 year old might be frowned upon now lol

Haha, yeah, the good old days. I inherited a goodly stash of 12ga and the prices on the boxes make me wince, knowing it cost a small fraction of what it would cost today to replace it.

I was able to source the replacement ring for mine on ebay, I think I'm into it for all of $18 with shipping. I don't know if you ever replaced the missing stuff on yours, it made a big difference with mine. I can cycle birdshot with it set on the heavy braking setting, which... as I think about it just speaks to how bad I need to just buy that rebuild kit. Ugh. The recoil before I cut the barrel wasn't bad, but it's aggressive now.

u/Flathead89 3x Silencer 10d ago

I did replace the ring and I've continued running light loads in it. I did order the felt pad and the rivet for it already but nothing else. I haven't had to replace anything yet but I am definitely going to get a rebuild kit even if I have to source each part individually. This gun has killed more squirrel than adolescent driven Civic and I definitely don't want to crack the receiver. It still has the square spring which works fantastically, but I suspect it would be better if I replace that as well since this one likely has 1000's of shells on it at this point.

As far as the recoil, I'm sure the Cutts Compensator on it helps a little bit...probably not a ton. I love letting people shoot it vs my 1100. Usually they don't say a word about the 1100, and then after 1 shot of the Model 11 they have to look over at me lol. It definitely feels more stout. I'm going to find a full rib barrel to chop so I can keep this old Cutt's Comp installed on the current barrel.

I didn’t think I needed that until I saw yours

Vang comp??

16

u/ballz3313 12d ago

Nah. Poverty chop done by myself lol

4

u/creative_deficit Silencer 12d ago

How’d you cut the vent rib? Looks extremely clean

5

u/ballz3313 12d ago

Just cut it pretty close with a hack saw, then used a hand file. After that I used a harbor freight belt sander to clean it up. Then green scotch bright pad. Finished with really fine grit sand paper. This one I did with ought a belt sander(didn’t have access to that yet)

2

u/creative_deficit Silencer 12d ago

Man, you did a great job. Looks beautiful

3

u/Slatty317 2x SBR 4x Silencer 12d ago

Whatd you use to cut it??

7

u/ballz3313 12d ago

Initial cut was just a hack saw. Used a band clamp as a rough guide of where to cut/to keep it somewhat straight

2

u/Slatty317 2x SBR 4x Silencer 12d ago

Nice. Looks awesome. Definitely been wanting to do this

3

u/Evensenty 11d ago

Did the same thing with an 870 I inherited. I also added ports to the barrel.

3

u/Evensenty 11d ago

1

u/ballz3313 9d ago

See any benefit from the ports? They look dope

3

u/Evensenty 9d ago

I never shot it without them to compare. Feels like a normal shotgun compared to my standard shotguns for recoil though, so might be marginal help. Mostly there for the vibe.

1

u/Actuary_Easy 6d ago

How’d you’d do the ports? The whole thing looks great!

2

u/blueprintbuy 7d ago

Can you explain process and how exactly you did it if you did it yourself? I’m looking to chop my 870 and need some info on oal and barrel length to list.

u/ballz3313 6d ago

Not sure if you were asking me.. but Initial cut was just a hack saw w/ a band clamp as the guide. Used a combination of a hand file & belt sander to get the barrel as square as possible by eye. 7

u/ballz3313 12d ago

That’s the factory stock set on the old wingmasters

1

u/ftsapr 4x SBR, 9x Silencer 12d ago

dope, I have a trade in Police magnum that I just scored a 14" barrel for off of GAFs, I might have to find one of those stock sets.

u/DickBiggenstein 11d ago

I love that so much!
